Just noticed that a couple of threads have been locked, and one has now gone entirely. Did we do something wrong?

I noticed the server thread just got locked,  I was about to vote and comment.

This server situation is getting out of hand. Dave, we all appreciate what you have done is saving Autoshite and dealing with corrupt databases. I want you to keep managing the site going forward, however I feel that having the site located on your own personal server at home is taking the piss out of you more than anything.

You have all the costs of the server + electric + bandwidth, and to be fair your residential broadband isn't the best place to hang a server from.

I'm not being critical so don't take this the wrong way.

Infact I will buy 12 months hosting for us to save you the pain of having to deal with this extra shit at home. We, as members of Autoshite should try to funs the server issue.

All this is a mystery to me. I don't understand any of the stuff about hosting and servers! Gladly other folk do understand! I just want it to work.

I presume that someone will still have to run the forum wherever and however it is servered or hosted?

Confused! But happy to chip in if that is what is required. Either for Dave or whoever takes on this thankless task.

It has been a rather bad run of late, but then my cars seem to go through phases like this.

Mind you, I've run forums with managed servers (ie not in a house) and the only difference is that you can have a good old rant at a faceless organisation when things go wrong. They still go wrong.

Some of you are worse than my missus & thats saying something>

First of all server is not at my home,it on a very large server array located in france.with a speed of over 100mbs

Do a speed test if you dont believe me.

http://tools.pingdom.com/

Zone Info: autoshite.com Zone Info Info Type    Message    Information autoshite.com./176.31.61.199 is located in France. Information www.autoshite.com is a CNAME record pointing to autoshite.com. Information 4817 milliseconds to complete zone checks.

The only costs i have are the monthly cost of Whm/Cpanel& the invision board licence.

As i have explained before,if you put Autoshite on a tuppeny hapenny shared server it  will run as slow as fuck.

This was the reason i locked other threads.

Now getting really pissed off with it.

Tbh,Now so pissed off that if someone wants to take it on as job lot then get in touch with electric leyland.with your proposals.

Its just one snipe after another,

Server was  good but had some memory problems,

We are no longer on that.

I spent a good few hours of hard work relocating some of my other sites so i could use a node on my best server for autoshite.

Its now been rebuilt with fresh installs of Whm & cpanel.

It has round the clock monitoring with checks every minute and if anything goes down i get an instant email.

Dont think there are any more problems in offing but who knows.

The only thing that could be an issue is that autoshite.com domain should really be pointed to my server instead of using its nameservers.

In practice should not be a problem but shall ask Rich to change it if it is.

I cant do any more,

if it plays up to any extent any more (unlikely but may be dns propogation probems for up to 48 hours) then i will be moving it to  designated server and let someone else play.

Now can we please get back to discussing cars etc.

Lets just move on and re-review it if the problems continue. It's unfair to have a pop at Dave who's doing this for nothing don't forget. If anyone's got a positive suggestion to how it can be improved or help offered then hunky dorey else lets just get on with molesting some Allegros.

Now, if someone asked me that I would simply run away after bursting into tears.

Am so glad that some people can actually understand the question, let alone answer it in a meaningful way. Taking the Internet for granted as though its like 'air' or 'water' or something else always available is perhaps not how it should be. Respect to Dave.

Save - you are doing a fine job.

It just like any old car, sometimes it runs. sometimes it needs a good kicking to get going, its part of the fun.

Dave, without your time and expertise there would probably be no Autoshite as we know and love(?) it, and we all appreciate what you are doing. So do please carry on with your electronic equivalent of welding up a Lancia that has been at the bottom of a pond for ten years, we know that you will get there in the end :)

Dave, thanks for all your hard work. I know nothing about computers but I do know they can become massively monged up when they want to.

As everyone knows, fixing an elusive fault is a huge trial-and-error effect.

Please carry on!

I was going to add on that thread that using a third party paid/free service has its problems. Its hassle free when it works, but when it goes wrong it can be catastrophic. I ran a forum on FORUMER.COM (who host the 999 forum) and after 3 years they deleted it in a server move. It was a move I didnt ask for or want. For this reason I wholeheartedly support Dave in running this forum for as long as he wants to do it, and dont recommend using a service. My forum only has a couple of hundred members so it cant be worth it to me to pay for the service. I dont fully understand the process either to run my own server or have good enough broadband to operate it either.

Best of luck Dave you are doing a grand job!

There's a big difference between paid for and free hosting fred. I've got paid hosting shared for some ASP sites I do with SQL server database stuff I do. It costs be 30 a months and it rarely goes down.

Hopefully it's a mute point anyway as all seems well today.
