Anyone found a solution to car storage

I see cars I want to buy all the time.

Last week it was a Fiat X1/9, a few weeks ago a nice Ital. Today a mint MGB GT

 

I test the water with the girlfriend and the answer is always "where are you going to put it" I have one car on the drive with a cover on it (Smart Roadster -needs another £1k spent which won't be happening for a long time) one car in the garage (E21) One other car for the commute is on the street.

 

I looked for commercial storage for the Roadster and was fairly surprised with the cost (I understand they do need to make a fair profit) but £80pw for maintained storage facilities, they check tyres etc etc is more than I need. Just need an old barn to put it in and forget about for probably 5 or even 10 years during its "unloved" period and return to it when interest returns or circumstances change.

 

I know many of you own a few cars, so how do you get over storage?

Simply push the Smart Roadster into a canal and replace with the Ital. Problem solved!

It's a case of trying to find someone with the facilities. Asking on forums can elicit useful responses. These things tend to be known by word-of-mouth.

Can fit eight in the drive and three in the garage!

 

Am contemplating some scaffolding to double height the garage for an extra microcar or two too.

Have a look for Caravan storage they'll often quite happily let you park your car up in their yard then just stick a cover over it. The last time I checked caraven storage was about £30 a month.

They'll probably not be happy with you welding new sills onto it or moving it in and out every day but if you just want shot of it for a few months it might work out.

In the past I have found nice guys that have a yard ot their business and if you ask nicely.... Ask at your local indy garage as quite often they will have a contact with someone with a yard. Around here Farmers are pretty good and they often have an interest in chode. Family contacts are good too! Does your ma or pa have an old friend with a yard or out-buildings?

 

I was lucky when my ole pa was a director at a multinational as he just asked a yardsman to "Find a spot for the lads car". They's wash it as well. They were the olden days.

I put a wanted ad on Gumtree and within about 4 days had a farmer rang me to ask if I'd found somewhere. I did state for hobby use, the guy who ended up in the shed next door was a spray painter and his rent was a lot more than mine...

Hence Red Sparrow's suggestion is indeed the best solution by far.

I found the best thing was ringing local farmers/estate managers from the yellow pages. There are always council lock ups and those self storage places that are cropping up all over the place but they tend to be more expensive.

I have 5 cars. All Rover 800s. I don't have a driveway, let alone a garage, but I reckon I've been a bit lucky with storage facilities. 2 of my 800s are stored in Council lock ups sub-let to myself. I have recently taken on a third garage for the third car up in Telford which is a bit far from me. The garage is quite a good one, wide enough to have all doors fully open, so whilst a little far, it is secure and cheap enough at £20 a month. The forth car is at a mates house awaiting an engine swap.

 

I am still on the look out for a place where I can store all of my cars in one place, it might be a bit more expensive but at least they'll all be in one place.

 

Unfortunately space is a premium these days, particularly for larger items such as cars or household goods. All the previous suggestions are good ones.

You know those independent bus companies or bus hire companies? They always have a yard  and you may be able to park up there. ANother is those places that store caravans and boats.

However, I don't think a really conclusive answer can be given. It depends too much on personal circumstances, location, OMG, etc, etc.

You could use the councils brick built garages, where I live they are a stupendous £12 pw, however if you can get a plot to put a garage on yourself you would pay £1.30 pw. You might drop lucky and get some old duffer whose giving up a site with an old metal garage. The council normally ask the tenant to shift the old garage, but if you come to some agreement to take on the tenancy you could have a decent garage for next to no money each week.

I've been storing stuff (stuff, rather than a car or cars) in a container at a local remover's self-storage facility since October.  It's cost me a bucket of money but at least my stuff was pretty safe.  The hours I could get at it were somewhat limited though.  I now have a council lockup (you find me in the overlap/moving period) which is slightly smaller than the container but a whole lot cheaper, and at least in theory, I can get at my stuff any time I want.  If you can get one, the council lockup has to be first choice.  Meanwhile, and possibly because I was an existing customer, the mover did say I could park a car in the storage yard if I needed to, for a fairly nominal rate.  Before I needed to, I sold the car, so that never happened.

The car park of your local BT exchange. They usually have a big car park, shit CCTV and are almost always unmanned. Nobody will know whos car it is and they'll all blame each other.
