red5 Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Saw this today - driver took a left after seeing me with camera out.... No idea if it's new mind - I'm sure someone will be along to hammer better information over it.
hairnet Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-review ... mg3-driven hmmm
red5 Posted April 9, 2013 Author Posted April 9, 2013 Well, yes. But, why pattern disruptive stickers and gaffa taped over MG badges ? Shirt driving it, and really did turn off when he saw me.
Lankytim Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Off topic but I remember years ago my dad racing some cock in a BMW 5 series in his Citroen C15 van off that set of traffic lights. They stayed level up to the point where the Evoque is parked on the pavement. The BMW was edging ahead but didn't see the transit van parked at the side of the road! He drove hard into the back of it, cue an angry looking bodybuilder type guy sprinting out of one of the shops to remonstrate with the unfortunate driver, who leapt out of his Beemer and ran down the road shouting "it was him!" at my Dad, who sheepishly drove off.
cort16 Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Having looked at that autoexpress picture it's defo an MG3. It looks pretty good!
Lord Sterling Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Hagley Road/Bearwood junction there, used to be my route home going through Bearwood. Despite driving around Brum, I have not seen one if these test cars yet. This MG looks a little too generic, the kind of car you could easily loose in a carpark (when painted resale Silver/Black or whatever) that said I suppose they are playing it 'safe'.
dollywobbler Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Hagley Road/Bearwood junction there, used to be my route home going through Bearwood. Thought it was. I almost ran an old lady over at that junction after the stupid bat scuttled across the road on a green light. I was coming up to overtake someone, so she was entirely in my blind spot until she appeared right in front of me. A few metres before your car is there, I was gently skidding into the car next to me. Somehow avoided the old lady and then pulled into that petrol station just visible. Had to sit and breathe for a few minutes! That would have been late 2002 IIRC. Another fact you don't need to know is that I grew up in Bearwood between the ages of 2 and 10.
Negative Creep Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Why would you drive a car through town if you didn't want people taking pictures of it?
Morgan84 Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 I would like to see more MG's on the roads, although we all know the real Rover / MG of the past is dead and buried, but wish the 'new breed of MG' well in the car market place, and hope their depreciation is the same as it was for old Rover so we can all bag a bargain beko1987 1
freebird Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 Looks good and looks like loads of other cars. The interior looks like its ten years out of date in the same way that Dacia is using the old Renault hand me downs to keep it seriously competitive.I would be suprised if this isnt pitched at a price thats too high for what it is.
Station Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 They're meant to be good, and could be make or break for the company in the UK. It doesn't like my fire though, but I hope it does well. I doubt they care too much as they sell OK in China I hear.
hairnet Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 shame they cost too much and chuck too much out the exhaust sandero all the way on pricepoint
Morgan84 Posted April 9, 2013 Posted April 9, 2013 It's fair to say lots of manufacturers are pricing themselves out. Kia are no longer as competitive, same goes for Hyundai and Skoda, but Dacia looks good until they get their feet under the table
Rod/b Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 They'll need to be cheap. We get them here and they're not very good really. As the recent MG6 review said "Out of date in many key areas. Impossible to recommend"
SambaS Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 I hate them solely on the basis they are not British. Same as the Bini. The whole fucking Rover story sucks. However. Drove a Bini. Liked it. And if these MGs are utter shite, like CitiRover shite they will definately grow on me.
Wilko220 Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 "Out of date in many key areas. Sounds like a selling point to me! But generally the whole MG Rover saga just depresses and angers me in equal measure. Can't see myself ever being bothered about having a "new" one, however cheap or shite they get. They're just generic with absolutely no character. Vince70 and mercrocker 2
Volksy Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 I think if they hadn't bothered with the graphics and left the badges off no-one would have battered an eyelid that it might be a prototype. I'd have just thought it was a grey import Kia etc.
Justin Case Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Well-known trick, also used by Jaguar and others.1. Cover car in a 'disguise' that is about as subtle as a neon track-suit2. Drive it in daylight down one of the busiest roads in Birmingham3. Pretend to be 'caught out' by photographers4. Wait for said pictures to appear all over the interweb5. Sit back and relish all the free publicity
face Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Well, if my life depended on it I would have said that photo was a last model Punto. Shows what I know. It looks bloody terrible and totally anonymous (although the pics on the autoexpress site make it look better) The car market is saturated with common run-of-the-mill generic shit, make something slightly different and it will sell like hot cakes - Fiat 500, Mini, Beetle, Smart. MG ought to offer something slightly quirky and unique, something to make people want one. I don't imagine brand loyalty is going to be enough to sell many MG's. Sad. Vince70 and catsinthewelder 2

Sit back and relish all the free publicity You got there before me - exactly what I was thinking. Problem is that the press probably aren't interested apart from slating it. As others have said it'll probably be a fairly decent car but will be overpriced like the MG6 as there are obviously still some directors there who think the MG brand has value. I really don't think it does anymore. It's a shopping trolley that looks like it's from Korea, no amount of MG badges can change that.
scooters Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 dig up old thread - it never ceases to amaze me why car makers bother to do this - most modern cars look exactly the same to me - dull silver blobs
NorfolkNWeigh Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Glad you dug it up,not for the crappy Chinese hatchback, but the location, where the Esso sign is was the site of the place my dad did his apprenticeship . Cranmores, over the years it's been various dealerships including a Reliant and motorcycle place, the last time I went past a few years ago it was a wine warehouse. . It seems weird that one dealer sold Morris,Triumph and Vauxhall. But at the time there were was no connection between Triumph and Morris apparently they sold Austin's as well although everything had to be kept separate to Morris. Almost as if they pretended they were entirely different cars. Jozza, Vince70 and Lord Sterling 3
mercrocker Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 ^That's more like it! Unless MG can put the world back like that they can FRO
Lord Sterling Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 ^^^ Wow! That's absolutely amazing! The place by Esso I think is still a wine warehouse I think. Where the hut in the abive picture is some sort of gym I think. I dont often pass by here (if at all) There is a weird thing though..... opposite the M&B pub is/was (its been demolished, no doubt for some fancy appartments) but still on the same side on Hagley Road were some huge family houses. So far over the past 10 years I notice that at least 3 of those houses have been destroyed but leaving the garage strewn in rubble. I remember one house used to have an early 700-series Volvo saloon outside, there were builders fences halfway up the driveway and the living room light always seemed to be on revealing the 1960 wallpaper that was still up. Certainly on that part of the Hagley Road the area seems a mix of very expensive gated houses or once proud family homes/buildings left to decay and probably be demolished after a while. Its sad.
