Lazy spotters thread

I've been meaning to stop and take a snap of this Jag for a while. Seems to be living at the top of my road and I see it all over the place being given a hard time. Last time I saw it out was up near the builders merchants and it was towing a trailer with a small digger on it. Interior looks in really good condition and is littered with empty McDonalds bags and dirty clothes. Heroic work!

Spotted loads of these commercial 4x4s when over the border recently, think it is a tax thing in Ireland

Yup. VRT (Vehicle Registration Tax)

In quite a few European countries when everything went "free market" in 1993 those countries which slapped on massive import taxes had to do something else. So they moved from an import tax to an initial registration tax to get round things...

If you have a commercial vehicle, it's a fixed 200 yoyos in VRT. If you have a private car it's worked out differently and could be anything from (€270 to € many thousands). All this before paying annual Motor Tax (equivalent to VED) which is equally stupid in magnitude.

On that basis, importing and registering a typical Shiter's chariot is prohibitively expensive.

Just checked the car out online.  Respectable owners in their 60s in leafy and affluent Hertfordshire.

No MOT.

I'm sure the red Civic used to belong to my parents' elderly next door neighbour, it was an automatic and always seemed very noisy but it was kept immaculate, now replaced by an orange Aygo.  Good to see it still going.

I don't often do a spotting but on Sunday I went for a run which took me past a roadside local car dealer who always used to have some pretty ropey stock, I remember back in about 1995 my dad taking us there to look at a tatty Montego diesel estate which sadly he didn't buy.  These days their forecourt is mostly 06 reg Focuses and the like but I found they had a massive stock of 'unsellables' at the back, flat tyres, old tax discs in the window and all in various shades of green.  Almeras, Astras, Focuses...yawn.  Wait, what was that??  I had to go back and take a closer look.

Oh yes, a Yugo 55A 'Highway' special editon.  Bizzarly, this utterly rotten mess with flat tyres, no sills and a perforated bootlid is showing as having a valid MOT until April next year!  I can only assume the plate is on another Yugo now, this poor thing has been prepped for racing in the past with knobbly tyres and a homebrew skid plate under the front valance.  Something has been eating the interior and it doesn't look pretty in there.

I'd be interested to know the story behind it but it looks well past saving,

Also, tidy looking 45 with cream leather interior which I'm almost tempted to ask about and a mouldy Rio.

They also had a mossy Mazda Demio, an utterly rotten MGB convertible and a late-ish Daihatsu Charade in there.  Sorry about the rubbish photos, daylight was running out and it was raining and blowing a gale.

I like vans with graffiti. Sprinter, Hackney E5.

When you go down places like Whitechapel Market, almost all the market traders' vans are tagged or painted. Here's another couple of older ones.

I've got quite a lot of shit for this thread that if I posted anywhere else would attrack mocking and other Internet unpleasantness.

An example would be this Vauxhall Carlton 2.0 Diplomat I found a looooong time ago. Absolutely top spec, although shame it wasn't the 2.6.

2nhdl53.jpg

I'm astonished to see it's got a current MOT until May 2016...and the person who's got it clearly either knows how to handle a spanner or is determined to keep it going by throwing money at it.

"Front Exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases (7.1.2)

Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content at idle excessive (7.3.D.4)
Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle excessive (7.3.D.3)
Offside Obligatory mirror seriously deteriorated, affecting the rear view (8.1.2a)
Nearside rear parking brake recording little or no effort (3.7.B.6a)
Offside rear parking brake recording little or no effort (3.7.B.6a)"
