Nowt wrong with good old c90's. I would still have mine if it didn't get nicked. Damn good bike and reliable. Front brake is perculiar though as it lifts up under braking. Back was good though. I run continental Tyres on mine. Gripped well in corners. I am actually looking for another if one came up cheap.

i had a sukida commander,,,, chinese grey import, was ok... badly finished edges on plastics, surface corrosion, and quality of metal bolts and fixings.... other than that had 4 years and topped at 55 mph..

Stuboy - was it reliable though?

 

When I think back to the early 80's when I got my first wheels, the Japanese stuff didn't last that long either.

 

You could normally pick up used Japanese bike for almost nothing....

 

I remember paying only £10 for a P Reg CB125 and £15 for an S Reg Kawasaki KH250 Triple....these bikes were no more than 6 years old at the time! :shock:

 

The CB was pretty well goosed but still ran OK and the KH250 was unloved due to the newly passed learner laws.

 

I remember a mate buying an immaculate Yamaha XS250 "US Custom" with almost no miles on it for £70 FFS!!!!!

 

The Chinese shite doesn't even seem to apporoach similarly low levels of cost by comparison?

Wow, just had to Google that as not seen one before. Appears to be a T350 Rebel of some sort, don't know what they're like over there but must be mega rare in Blighty.

 

You were of course right about 250s being unwanted due to learner laws. Most people who passed their test wanted something bigger at the time, so as you say plenty of cheap ones about.

I actually bought a KH250 the night before doing my test, as a sort of incentive to pass. Ended up owning four or five of them over the years and would love another one now, they were great fun to ride. I also need to check the DVLA database at some point and see if my old GT380B is still on there.

It's amazing when I think about the number of old motorcycle that used to be lying around during my youth that could be picked up for buttons.... :shock:

 

I can't remember the reg of my old KH250 other than it was an "S Reg" and was blue..

I bought this today.

It's a SYM Jet 50. SYM are made in Taiwan - this is my first experience with one, but it does seem a shitload better put together than the usual Chinese crap (the fact that it's 7 years and 22,000 miles old and still going strong is testament to this), whilst still being cheap - £100 with T&T until the end of July. It's a 2-stroke, too, which I much prefer on a 50. It's very restricted at the moment - tops out at 35 and takes quite a while to get there - but I've been doing some googling and they aren't that hard to derestrict. It handles OK, brakes well and overall doesn't seem like a bad bit of kit. SYM do quite a range of bikes so might be worth a look.

Sounds like a bit of a bargain - do these things get taxed on emissions now or is it still very cheap tax for a 50cc 2-stroke?

Been looking at 125's again over in the UK and trying to track down a SYM Wolf Classic and they seem to have disappeared from pretty much anywhere online in the UK!

 

They appear to have a decent following as a 150cc variant in many countries, including the USA.

Benelli adiva 125. All the quirkyness of a c1 but piaggio engine and the roof folds into the boot for ultimate points! I would love a spacy or helix myself. Ultimate shite with economy and reliability must be my Honda cub though.

Problem is you can't find a cheap Cub these days.  When I was in my teens you could pick up a perfectly useable example with T&T for about 150 quid.  Now even complete rotten wrecks are making 300+.

 

Spacy is a good call though.  There's one for sale on RR - http://retrorides.proboards.com/thread/161221/1984-honda-spacy-ch125-sale?page=1&scrollTo=1894429 .  I'd love an Adiva too - finding one is proving to be tricky however.

My cub is an s plate with 26k on clock,faded paint and looks a bit ratty but it still makes me laugh when i think if i put it on eBay it would fetch between 800 and 1k. Just because it runs,no rust or corrosion and has tax and test. Was an a diva for sale last year at a bike shop near me for £995 with a years ticket. Wish i bought it now and stuck it in garage

I saw a really tiding looking Cub today being used near Crewe somewhere, rare sight now. When I was a lad we used to buy them for £5/£10/£15 then hammer the absolute bollocks off them round the fields until we killed them, with often quite amusing incidents along the way.

Angyl has see mine,its my main mode of transport. Not a believer in leaving it looked up. Done nearly 500 mile since last Wednesday. Spoke to a friend earlier who said he wishes he bought a load for 20 quid a few years ago and sold them today. Would made a killing.

Those Riders cubs are sold with no warranty at all, is that even legal?

Few folk have bought the riders cub on the c90 club. Delivered in a crate so build yourself. A few issues have been found with them by a couple of folk,burnt wiring, chipped paint but others have said they had no problems. Nothing come to light regarding reliability issues and overall folk are happy. How i see it is you can have a brand new bike for less then 700 quid. Assembled yourself so you know its got correct grease,oil and all nuts are tight. Ride it for 3 years till mot is due. If properly maintained there is no reason it shouldn't pass.

Nostalgia ain't what it used to be, and all that. I can understand why a lot of 'classic' bikes fetch good money now (KH/RD/GT etc) as they were popular in the day and mostly rated quite highly.

However it beats the hell out of me how absolute shit like the CB250 G5 and CB250 K  are even remotely sought after, they were fucking awful 35 years ago and haven't got any better since.

At least those Riders things have a proper indicator switch.  I never could see the point of the up / down job on the Crunchie.
