New shite/shit/nice/girls Car

After flirting with the idea of a Saxo VTR, I ended up buying a Puma instead and picked it up the other night.

It's a 1.4 and only has just over 60k on the clock. One owner and a full Ford FSH.

VERY small amount of grot on one arch, which I will remedy come the better weather.

Goes nicely and is a hoot to drive.

Looks very red..... Apart from that, errr. Enjoy!

Very nice indeed, I'm starting to appreciate these, not girly at all imo. My mate had 2 back when they were new and he only liked 'drivers cars' too.

Quite high on my 'Want and could feasibly own' list, just behind a Rover 75.

I too was looking at VTR adverts the other day. Seems to be quite a few unbarried ones about with decent miles for under a grand these days.

Think I prefer the Puma though.

I've got a 1.7 one in that colour. Peugeot 206 arches can be used to repair the arches on these as you can't get the bits from Ford.

Don't try to change a door on one ffs.

About a million years ago when I was a Ford employee I had a 1.7 Puma in red as a company car and it was ace. One Sunday I went on a corporate jolly to Windermere, spent a day messing about learning how to 'drive' boats then got fed then drove home.

The drive home was ace - from Kendal down on the twisty and fast A65 to Long Preston then on to Gisburn and back to Burnley was absolutely fantastic. Pumas can be a huge amount of fun on the right road when theres no traffic about

As I've said before, Pumas have a sweet chassis to say its basically a mk4 fiesta and Racing Pumas are sublime.

Posted

Never driven one but they are supposed to be superb. Also silly cheap right now, so buying one before the OSF tax kicks in would be a rather good idea.......

Very nice that, always had a soft spot for Pumas - very sexy motor. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I cannot believe how they're at that 'can't give them away' stage. They look class and are stupidly cheap at the moment.

Mine wasn't that cheap, but considering its condition and mileage, I deemed it value. I paid £1200 for it t&t for 6 months.

These 1.4's aren't the fastest, but its nippy enough. I only do a rural round trip of 16 miles a day and its great fun for that.

Not wanting to thread hijack, but the more I think about it the more I want one, especially a 1.7 in blue. I know they can rot but anything else that would make it a bad idea?

Got woken up at half four this morning by the kids and thereafter I was laid awake thinking about Pumas (as you do).

I'm also quite fancying one now and could probably get it by the domestic management. Wonder if a classic insurance policy would cover one?

1.7 Nikasil cylinder liners can wear if the wrong grade of oil is used, and suspension bushes do wear pretty quickly. The very fast steering is ace but takes a bit of getting used to, as does the tiny steering wheel. Other than that, they're a hoot.

I'm getting more impressed by my Puma every day - staggering value when you weigh it up. I cannot see these being so cheap for much longer.

They are also great in the snow!

They do rust though, I reckon all but the garage queens will have turned to dust in 20 years. Mine had rust in...

Both rear arches

Both sill tops

Floorpan

Behind the front wings

I snapped 3 bolts that had rusted in. I had them out 2 years before to fit a sound system.

Would I have another one, yes I would. Only 600 £s worth though.

Pooma's are ace, had a 1.4 as a project car in at the training garage and really liked it. Back axle bushes were a real hassle to do, but transformed the handling, and Ebay ABS sensors worked for about a week.A bit low rent inside and the gearknob is FREEZING in the winter.

Posted

ABS was only an option on the 1.4s - mine hasn't got it.

You're right about the gear knob, it is serioulsy one of the coldest things I have ever touched.

was looking at pumas but bought an mx5 merlot for 400 quid. Might try one next time...

I do like that red one and so much less a hairdresses car than the Tigra.

However...

You have a WOMANS car my lord....

I'll wager that car never had six Welsh rugby players crammed in the back seat and boot and driven all the way to Cornwall for a pint of bitter
