Custom number plate query

A year or so ago on Autoshite I found out the details of a very obliging chap who made up number plates from old dealer logos. Since emailing him I've lost all the details - does anyone remember this particular outfit? A lot of you seemed to know of him. Ta

If you are referring to dealerplates.co.uk, he has unfortunately closed.

Half arsed law No. 10,000

Problem: Fake number plates.

Desire: Control of numberplate manufacture.

Solution: State supplied plates of new design.

Actual: insist everyone with a numberplate machine register with the DVLA, insist they write their name on the plates, attempt to make it part of the MOT but fail, pretend not to notice numberplate making machines can be bought easily and cheaply.

Related Half Arsed Laws:

Problem: Ancient deathtraps on road.

Desire: Safety inspection for automobiles.

Solution: State run inspection centres.

Actual: Let backstreet garages determine cars legal status

Bit confused here, I ordered a pair of number plates online, fitted them before the MOT and the car passed nay problem. Thing is, they don't have a supplier or phone number or anything on the bottom of the plates. They are in every other way legal, with the correct spacing, font etc.

Are they in some way dodgy or not legal without the supplier/phone number bit at the bottom? They have the BS AU 145d bit on bottom right hand corner but that's all... No other details. Is that wrong?

Not for you, you’re doing nowt wrong. However, the guy who made them has broken the half-arsed law mentioned by Peter.

I've been buying those cheap ebay number plates for a few years now, £11.99 for a pair of plates is a bargain compared to the £25 Halford charge and you don't need your log book too, never had a issue with mots or the police either.

Sweet! Am in the clear then.

Thanks Monsieur B.

Thanks Trigger, you and Sir Bollox have made me sleep easier! Not that dodgy number plates is the worst crime in the world, but , would hate to be illegal n all. :D

I guess this sort of thing could put you off.

http://signam.co.uk/content/huge-fine-i ... ate-dealer

He was fined £34,000 for the offences under the Vehicles (Crime) Act 2001, and £6,000 for the Trade Marks Act offences, as well as £25,452.85 prosecution costs. ...in addition ... a Confiscation Order that all proceeds derived from the criminal acts in the sum of £600,000 were taken ...

Talk about a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

Cllr. Brian Spurr, Central Bedfordshire Council's Executive Member for Sustainable Communities Services, said: "This case is an excellent example of where the Proceeds of Crime Act has been used to recover a defendant's ill gotten gains.

I'm fairly sure the Proceeds of Crime Act wasn't dreamed up for reaming dodgy number plate sellers. Dicks.

what I dont get is why the bloke kept 600 grand where it could be found!!! This is hardly selling crack to four year olds is it?

I got pulled over with the original plates on my Cavalier and asked why I thought it OK to not have the post code at the bottom of my plates before? Blatently a new recruit straight from Hendon, he was most displeased when I informed him that the plates and car were older than he was and to check his books before bullying motorists for it.

I think any car from 51 onwards has to have it, but not 100% sure. A post code and BS markings...

BS being the operative word!

Yas. That's what we were told. Mind you, we had other things to occupy us on the beat in Belfast!

I believe so, but we have managed to get away with it by having "private" plates which are an N and a W reg which go onto each ad every car we have. Because the reg is before 2001 we seem to get away with it even though the car its attached to isnt. In fact Mrs Micrasheds car has those rather nice plastic digit on metal plates.

My original plastic dealer plates were looking a bit worse for wear.

Cant remember where i had my replacements from, was an online place a few years back.

I ordered some pressed metal, black/yellow & white/yellow plates.

They came in mint condition, with no BS or postcode markings, but there was a letter stating they were for 'showplates', for 'show' purposes only.

So went straight outside and fitted them to my daily driver. (as you do)

Never been pulled ABOUT the plates. (Have been pulled over several times as its a ropey looking old orion)

But they've never mentioned the plates. They look 'suited' to the car.

I think they just pull me over to have a butchers at it. They seem to love the old girl.

There is usually a number plate stall at reasonably sized car shows - certainly Tatton Park and the Huddersfield Autojumble have them, with the "no names, no pack drill" policy pretty evident ;) plus a choice of "plastic" vs. "pressed steel" etc...

The "no postcode, no BS" only applies to pre-51-plate cars, as others have said; unless the car was registered more recently, apparently... My MG has an A-prefix but was registered in early 2008 so needs the postcode and BS mark on its registration plates, I gather... I got my old-font plates from the late Macsons in Bury, as I was a regular punter for two decades (there are other ways, see above ;) ).

It's passed 4 MoTs with these number plates now, and I don't expect a failure on the number plates is imminent ;) .

Bad law, applying the common denominator to all... And quite prescient, in the light of the more-recent "continuous insurance" law (for example) ;) !

Does anyone know for sure? My car is 1988, so presumably is ok on ' show plates'. As in totally legal, colour, font and spacing, but no dealer postcode etc?

Soz to harp on about this, but given my wife's job, anything illegal on our cars would be a major no no. Embarrassing to say the least.

You bought the car with those plates fitted and wasn't aware...

Pre-2001 plates need none of the bullshit. Just make them as vertical as possible, secure, the correct colour front and rear with black figures (Post 1973) , and no honeycombing, as this apparently phases the readers.... Obviously real early stuff can be "black and silver/white" Mine are very dark grey with medium/light grey figures. TBH, even the new plates need nothing extra on them, as they decided it was just confusing everybody. As long as the spacing is correct, and they "look" right, you have nothing to worry about.
