Clutching at (cheap) straws....£200 shite req'd

My stepdaughter has returned from her little jaunt abroad and is now car-less.

VERY limited budget - she's got about £500, which needs to cover purchase, tax and insurance.

She's currently jobless, but looking for work, so with a bit of luck she won't be fiscally challenged for long.

Anyone got anything, before i start battling with eGay?

I'm in Grays, Essex, RM16 nr M25 J30.

Cheers!

if she admits shes jobless shes not likely to get insurance. Over on another forum there were a few cases of people having insurance cancelled on admitting they were unemployed. Self employed or student would be easier to get insured.

That has to be bollox otherwise those on dole couldn't have cars surely?

Nah, they're viewed as a higher risk for whatever reason so insurers often charge more. Not sure how much though, so pump some quotes into confused.com with false names and addresses to find out exactly what difference it'll make

Sorry to be Mr Negative, but it is even possible to get something even vaguely roadworthy with tax and MOT and then insure it for £500? Sounds a bit of a longshot tbh.

I think the insurance part will be the difficult bit really. You can probably find 'something' with a bit of life and tax and MOT for a couple of hundred quid so long as you don't mind what it is too much.

Thanks for the responses chaps (and chapette), to be honest the insurance is the unknown quantity.

She's 32, and before she went away, had a decent wodge of NCD - but that was 18 months ago. I've got a few candidates on my watch list on t'bay, and have mentioned a few to her.

THIS:

Daewoo Lanos, currently £136, no reserve, with 6 months tax and ticket. Not glamourous or fashionable in any way, but wheels is wheels....

Has Mot but no tax, and is currently £166, four days to go. Again, not the sort of thing a bird of her age would choose, but hey, it's looking cheap.

Looks ok, mot till november, and they will tax at cost. Previous cat D, for what appears to be very little damage, and still under £200

There's also a Suzuki Wagon R Badermatic, a couple of Corsas and a Colt on the list.

She's round tonight, so we'll have a look at insurance then, but i can't see it being THAT dear shirley?

I didn't think so Trigz, but i've just got this nagging feeling in the old grey matter that it was 12months. I'll check it out, and hopefully the quotes won't be too sad.

I try not to look at my insurance documents because it's upsetting, but I'm sure I pay about £300 a year. That doesn't leave much for the rest of the car :(

When I had a classic car policy it was £120 but I think you need to be a named driver on another car you own for that

Just gone on Compare da meerkat, and cheapest quote for Daewoo is £363 from Axa fully comp, £325 TPFT from Octagon.

Rover 25 is £337 TPFT again from Octagon, £375 fully comp, again from Octagon.

I've guessed at 4 years NCB, she may have moar, will amend if thats the case.

It's gonna be tight for £500, but worth a shot!

If I add myself (43 y/o clean licence) to the Rover quote, it goes down to £367.

Thats worth it then

I only say that because my wife works in insurance and i remember her saying something about it when i spoke about putting her on a classic policy with this Alto i bought.

Posted

Pretty sure it's two years, so she should be ok as long as she has proof of the NCD.

I'll chime in with the Rover 25. I have had hit and miss on the sub £500 cars.

I've always found these things a false economy as unless you're really lucky the things either going to be completely unreliable or have some looming terminal faullt meaning your going to have to cough up for a new car or repairs at sometime very soon after you buy it. They're not normally scrap money for nothing. At least spending £4-500 gets you out of scrapper territory and into something that might stand a chance of lasting a year or so without any major malfunctions.

You could score a useable car for £250 now no danger. It's just a matter of not being fussy, that's all.

Posted
Absolutely. Most of the shite I buy is sub £500 and EXCELLENT.

I can't complain either- I tend to buy deeply unfashionable stuff thats cheap because nobody else wants it, rather than because there's anything wrong with it.

I bought my tax mot micra for 120. Gumtree is the home of ridiculously cheap cars ESP around xmas

Three years and 25,000 miles on I'm STILL driving my 1995 £200 Citroen Xantia (2 litre AND automatic AND all the electric windows/electric sunroof AND the remote alarm all STILL work) so if you're in the right place at the right time there are bargains to be had....

Best of luck with the search, they are out there. I've spent 6 months trying to find a home for a £200 BX diesel auto for one guy that I know, then a girl I know asks me to find her a £200 car the week that he finally sells it :|

So any that you spot for sale that are too far this way..........

The problem is that it seems like a lot of hassle to try and sell a £200 car with a couple of months tax and test when you can simply weigh the tax in for maybe £30 and send the car over the bridge with no potential comeback and trouser £150 scrap money. Nowadays spending £500 you can buy an amazing car that could give you many years good service and come equipped with aircon, electric windows, power steering and not look like it had been dragged out of the Mersey.

You're right, Warren, and that's half the problem. People are (mostly) too fussy and seem to think a rusty door bottom or different coloured wing is the end of the world so reject perfectly useable cars for such trivial things.

Said it before but I've effectively given up trying to source cheap cars for people who know the price of everything and the value of fuck all.

I'm not directing that at you by the way Bob, you jellied ell munching Victor-Meldrew-gnome-in-a-Metro-alike Mockney git.

The key is to go for something deeply unfashionable or slightly thirsty. Nissan Primeras, Volvo's, Saabs, Mondeo's all seem to be astounding value.

There was a minty 2 litre Primera for sale near me with 12,000 gen-u-win miles on it for £875 quid and it took them weeks to shift it. That thing will probably last another 10 years without too much bother.

Got it in one. The other one is when they go on and on about needing a cheap car and the one you find for them is either "too old" or they "don't like the colour".
