Are the Mk2 Mondeo the new uber banger?

The new supplied by Ford bolt needs shortening a tad so its not so close to the transmission and give a vibration;We always used to drill a hole through the end of the bolt and put a split pin as well as a precaution to make it fail safe

Remember doing the same, just to be sure!

As posted in the other thread about 2.0 litre motors, Here's where I got my wishbones and discs/pads from, they do wishbones on their own too but as everything was off I put new discs/pads on too as they are so cheap.

Rear arb links are cheap as chips too. Supposedly wishbones need doing every year or 2, not sure if that's just some in joke about mondeos though. Broken front coil springs are also a common failure. 

 

Where does it need welding? I'm guessing rear of the sills?

2 x new wishbones (£18 each!!!!!) I took the advice given above and got some new bolts which speeded the job noticeably.

 

 

A new coil spring (£24) to replace the old one which was broken in two places!

 

 

 

Bit of welding on the crusty sill;

 

 

Would have replaced the rear drop links too except that I bought the wrong ones like a c0ck. Still, a rare flash of productivity, will book a re-test tomorrow!!! Ms_Ba11s was a bit depressed when the garage gave her a £600 estimate to sort everything but I reckon we'll be sorted for under £180 including all the parts, the test fee and a new tyre so not too horrific.

The mondeo passed its test yesterday, ms_balls couldn't believe it! Drives super well now with the new wishbones and drop links.

Mrs Ba11s had been complaining about the steering on this recently, saying 'the steering column feels like its going to snap'. I dismissed this as being ridiculous but then shortly afterwards noticed the outer edges of the front tyres were bald as fook - annoying as I fitted the tyres and they weren't cheap. I had a drive in it and it felt bloody awful, like the wheels were barely in contact with the road. Any turn tighter than a medium-sized roundabout had the thing shuddering and twitching as the front wheels scrubbed across the tarmac.

 

Took it to Crewe tyre and exhaust today and asked them to check the tracking, they declared it to be 18mm out!!!! I don't know what dimension the 18mm refers to but the guy was impressed. Anyway £24 later its driving better than ever, you can really chuck it about now and it feels 'right'. 

 

Now done about 15k in this £400 banger, its a bit heavy on fuel (think Ms_B is averaging about 26-27mpg on her 9 mile commute) but its such a pleasure to travel in that it doesn't seem like a rip off. I love it!

My work colleague has an R reg 2.0 GLX complete with cracked front bumper. It sadly failed the MOT on welding and a few other things. He's owned it for 10 years and has been a great mode of transport for him. He isn't a car person (to paraphrase Reggie Perrin's Son In Law).

 

I think he will shell out and get it repaired. Will find out when i go back to work on Monday.

Gotta say I love mine but a friend of mine told me I'm trying to be king of the local council estate. Bar the odd very scruffy exsmple on its last legs they seem thin on the ground here in west devon. The Back of the sills on mine are looking a bit crispy under the RSAP body kit as are the rear arches in places. The bumpers however have somehow escaped damage!

 

I was browsing gumtree yesterday and there's an ST24 in Bristol advertised using what looks like pics of triggers old one on his drive!

They are solid cars, a 2.0 Si saloon was for sale near me recently I think they only wanted £400 for it. There's a lot left that are proper sheds though, rotten as hell scraping from one MOT to another with patch over patch.

 

If you can get a good one, Waxoyl it, they are a decent motor. The 1.8 in particular is respectable on the fule.

 

Get used to replacing bottom arms all the time though, these go with monotonous regularity, but then they are easy to replace and set you back about £25 a side. Ditto the drop links go every 12-18 months.

 

One thing to be aware is a clutch going is a throw away job unless the cars exceptional, you can bank on it being £3-400 to get it changed. It isn't a driveway job either...

If anyone is desperate enough, my mate's lad has a Mk2 Mondeo on his drive which must have run out of MOT and all that a while back now. It's nothing special, probably a 1.8LX or something, but I can see if he'll part with it if anyone wants?

Failing that I'm trying to get it to weigh in!

If it's out of test a while like that chances are it's ok for spares. You can buy a running one for a few hundred with test.

I remember spending some time with a MK2 1.8TD GhiaX - that was particularly sluggish from a standing start. Dad loved it, he owned it from 'nearly new' - but while it always felt stable on the road and handled well, I found it was just too slow and zero fun. It looked lovely though, a really nice dark green metallic with a grey leather interior.  Someone ran a red light and wrote it off while Dad was driving it in Leicester, it was solid enough to protect him leading to Dad buying a  MK3 Ghia as a replcement - a retrograde step in terms of trim level (in reality the only difference is that the MK3 doesn't have leather seats) but a far better driving car - handles better and feels much more responsive. 

 

My Father in Law had a red MK2 Zetec (2.0 pez) until last year which had a clutch failure - that went to the bridge as not economically viable to repair. It drove well enough until it died but wasn't anything special as far as I remember.

I regret selling the mk1 1.8 I had a decade ago. Fantastic car.

The clutch release bearing on mine is noisy. It says something about how worthless they are when that could develop into something that's "terminal" for the car. I wonder how many have been bridged because of the clutch book time and resulting labour costs?

That's it, they're worthless now.

Unless it's a diesel you can't give old Mondeos away. The diesel has a bit of a market as they are 'cheaper' to run so selling them isn't too bad. A 2.0 petrol? Difficult. It's because everyone assumes it will be dear to run, granted the tax is £260 but they'll do a reliable 32-34 mpg while ever you keep the oil clean.

Very probably. At which point when they are selling for £8000 I'll be physically sick when I think why I didnt buy them all up when they were 10p.

 

Given there's such a resurgence in their popularity and classic* potential we ought to write a buyers guide?

I think one of the classic mags did. I think I worked out from howmanyleft there are several thousand mk1's left, let alone mk2's, so while they are getting rarer, still a load out there.

I haven't seen a mk1 here for years, even a 1.5 is rare. Mk 2s are at the banger stage though; even the best of the late ones all seem at the 1-2k mark

 

My mates 130 6 speed with a recent enough clutch / dmf struggled to sell @500; and it was a lovely one, well specced and very quick for what it was
