Joining the M25 at Junction 20 heading anti clockwise an eratically driven 2009 Ford Focus ST in Metallic Blue.

Thought, possibly a slightly drunk salesman of some kind. Imagine the shock when I draw up alongside and see an 80 Year old Grannie in the drivers seat wearing old school string backed driving gloves!

:-0

:!:

Go Grannie! Go Go Go! I wonder if Ford had this demographic in mind for the ST?

Bet she's borrowed it off grandson Darren while her Hyundai Amica is being serviced

Maybe she borrowed it to pop over to the Post Office got lost, went up the slip road and has been doing the M25 for the last 200 miles (looking for somewhere to do a 3 point turn)?

Last week I called in at our local farm shop / cafe and close to the door I saw a new but badly parked Golf R much like this one:

I suspected some flashboy and his arm candy were responsible for it, but these three toddled over, Earl put his sticks into the boot, they slowly clambered into the bucket seats, and off they burbled!

I once managed to overtake a stunning turquoise DB5 on the road between Cirencester and Swindon.... I was in a petrol Land Rover. The Aston driver was in her 90s if a day..... Way to go Grandma!

Those oldies must be reaping the rewards of their civil service pensions that matured in the 20th Century.

Oh, and my old man's 70th birthday was well behind him when he bought his new Evo6 Ralliart!

It's always refreshing when some of the older generation don't opt for the default giffer chariots. I remember seeing a bright red FN2 generation Civic Type R being driven by a rather mature gent. Probably not the demographic Honda had in mind with that particular model!

With insurance being what it is today though - the only people able to get a reasonable premium are the wrinklies.

There is an old woman around here who drives an Integra Type R

A few years ago an old man could be seen near me driving his Nova GTE complete with grille AA badges. I think he's dead now as I haven't seen him for a while, his wife no doubt has it stored in the garage or something, until the day a scrapman weighs it in.

Personally I believe you don't become the driver you are at 70, you are the same all your life. Once a dithering dawdler always a dithering dawdler. Once a boy/girl racer, always a boy/girl racer. I'll be driving a Mk1 or Mk2 transit when I am 70. With any luck it will be the one we bought the year I passed me test!

You sound just like a lass we have in the local Geocachers team who keeps ferrets and drives transits. She loves them.

The lovely and slightly eccentric lady who lived opposite (sadly no longer with us) must have been well into her sixties, possibly even seventies, when she traded in her grey FSO Polonez for an XR2  I think she just saw it for sale and liked it. She was a larger than life character and in her younger days had apparently owned a Big Healey :D

At school, I remember seeing a woman, presumably the relative of a teacher, who looked about 80 getting into the driving seat of a Mk3 Escort. But not just any old Mk3 Escort, oh no,this was a Essex white RS Turbo!

There is an old dear who drives a Jag XK8 (rather badly) around Lampeter in West Wales.

Last night i saw an ancient woman driving a 70s Corolla SR coupe..and also locally theres Mk1 Escort 2dr with a blue rinse turbo attached to it..and back in the Highlands..one of our local Ladies..Miss McLean of Ardgour..twinset tweeds and pearls..she'd come round to visit us in our cooncil hoose..in a succession of Opel Mantas she owned..and she drove real slow thru Glen Tarbet...which just was not done..

Hmmm

So this old dear in a hotrod isn't as unusual as I thought. Just been questioning family members incase there are any known examples of this phenomenon in our family and was told about the time my great aunt (now long gone) was stopped by the rozzers for speeding in her Triumph Vitesse on the M1 in 1972.

Good effort Aunty.

My mum's last car, which she was driving until shortly before she died (age 83) was a Sierra 2.0. Not the epic hotrods of some of the above, admittedly, but pretty hairy on the kind of budget available to her! She was partial to a dose of power, my mum....
