Dull Cars

A car is only as dull as its driver, that's why modern supercars are largely boring as hell.

Some of the modern supercars are anything but boring. An Avensis or Mazda 626 is always dull.

If I hear another person going on about how great the Veyron is, I'll slip into a coma.

Remember MoogPa had an avensis for a few weeks as a temp lease car. It was a 1.8Gs. Utterly hateful and boring.. no power until for about 100 rpm there was a smidge of power at 3250 .. then back to no power. Only good thing was MPG was ace.

He got rid of it and got a Vectra Estate 2.2 150BHP... fast but thirsty ..

Most of my car history: 2 Escorts, 2, a 60 bhp SEAT Ibiza and a base Fiat Tempra with the miserable 1.4 engine running on 3 cylinders.

The Nissan Almera, despite it's high spec and decent performance and torque, remains dull. I'm now contemplating selling it come the next MOT. But like volksy's Corolla, it does a decent service plus no-one will want to nick it.

Merc W124s - despite their excellent build quality and presence - still look rather plain. A bit more interesting once it had the 'E-Class' facelift in the early 90s though.

I think there's a difference between boring but you can live with it, and boring where it gets to the point of being so dull it's hateful. Such as the Avensis.

I drifted my old RWD Volvo around a damp, empty roundabout for a laugh earlier. DULL CAR.

Ah, the old dream car/woman question.

"What would you buy if you won the lottery?"

"Ah. I'd really love a Bugatti Veyron."

"Describe your perfect woman."

"Ah, she'd be perfect. Really sexy, great and imaginitive in the sack, really fit yet extremely intelligent".

Not really sure what I'm trying to say, here, but I agree with you.

Also: Lotus Elises are dull. Excellent, but dull. They do exactly what they're designed to do, really well, and therefore do absolutely nothing that suprises me (except ride well, admittedly). It's a bit like the difference between watching open-wheel single seater racing compared to saloon car racing. I find the latter infinitely more interesting.

I like your style. Historic racing - yeah, it's nice to hear Ferraris and AC Cobras tearing about the place, booting out exhaust-created symphonies but by 'eck do I prefer watching the saloon cars. You've not lived until you've seen an Austin A35 hassling a MkVII Jaguar - and winning!

About 6 years ago I drove a 2003 M3 round the corner highlighted in red here at an indicated 120mph (I did actually look at the speedo) and it did not even twitch or owt, it just drove nicely round the bend and had a race with an M5 donwn the M621. What is the point of having a car that is soooooo dull at high speed? I prefer driving my GT6 round that corner at 40mph fucking shitting myself as its so uncontrollable, than I did driving the M3.

Bang on. Mrs the Princess' Metro is a lot more fun on a drive to work than my Rover 220 Coupe, the Rover is faster, more comfortable, has more grip, is more relaxing, has a better Stereo etc but is a lot less fun.

Zackly. In the olden days I briefly did a bit of marshalling at Snetterton. For every incredible Cortina Vs Ford Falcon Historic Saloon car battle there were dozens of tedious Formula Ford / Renault / Palmer Jaguar / Whatnot races. Fast saloon cars have to really fight against the laws of physics; ultralight wheeled missiles don't.

Gotta say, these posts about motorsport have made me realise why I find the commonly available stuff like F1, TVR's, Clios etc so boring.

I'd love to see historic saloon car racing instead, the A35/E-type interface sounds brilliant.

A+ for effort, nice map ! I took this bend on my commute to work every day for way too long. 120, eh? naughty !!!

But I agree. It's not just performance cars like an M3, even my estate mondy could take this bend at twice the legal speed with no drama. Where's the fun in driving fast if you have to look at the speedo to know you're going fast?

Btw you're not the current owner of Sam Glover's old 740 are you ? I spotted it parked in my neck of the woods the other day. No mistake with its sports tailgate !
