This is my neighbours:

2003 Mongdeo TDci Ghia, 130 brake hatchback.

Tested (until May I think, will double check) and tax expired.

'Fully loaded' he tells me inc. auto headlights and rain sensors. 150-odd thousand miles, looks quite a clean old thing but one door has been scratched/touched in. He says it starts and runs ok, but guess what? The DMF has started to throw it's hand in. Not expected to fail MOT, it's been well looked after apparantly.

pictures and shit later, I expect he could tax it (at cost) if wanted.

£595 ono, it's in Chester.

I'm going to probably  at the answer, but what's the going rate for a DMF on one of these - fully fitted, drive away cost?

And I assume that there's enough life left in it to get it to a garage, it's not sitting in bits or owt daft.

I think you're looking at a few hundred quid to get a garage to do it. The best thing seems to be converting to single mass if you're going to keep one of these it would seem. I'll ask about and get a definate price range.

Posted

I'm not sure if I want to see the answer myself!, I can't believe how cheap these Mondeos are getting now, £595 is a steal for this depending on much much the DMF is, I'm guessing it's the 53-plate spec with the digital climate and cruise control?

Posted

If it's only the DMF that's up the spout and the rest of it is average or better for 150k, I reckon I'll be interested.....

It's cetainly what he told me mate, but I'll try and get my lad to have a listen and see what he thinks. Don't quote me but I think the first sign is a horrible noise from the clutch and if not caught soon it spazzes the starter motor too.

Pictures here shortly...

'157,000 miles. Not taxed but will tax at cost (he thinks it's only £90 odd for six months) and at the moment it's working fine. The trouble started a couple of weeks ago when it wouldn't engage gear. He says the flywheel clanks a bit but one moving there's no noise-that from driving it back after it happened. He's already replaced the starter motor (before this DMF thing happened) and his theory is that if the flywheel is knack'd then like a starter motor sometimes it'll engage and others it won't'.

Naturally you'd have to drive it away at own risk but I'm pretty sure getting it back FOC won't be a problem if you use your noggin  History book stamped up to 100,000 miles.

Posted

Aye, I've done a bit of hardcore research (idly tapping stuff into Google) and it seems the DMF starts to get chewed up, fills the starter with lovely conductive dust, and you're on an endless cycle of replacing starters. Hmmmmmmm. It's not on my usual radar but the price+DMF could be within budget, it looks a nice barge and last time I drove one of these (115bhp TDCI LX Estate) it wasn't shockingly bad.

Either that or I convince Mrs Pillock that she needs to supersize her Focus. Has it got a loud stereo? :)

Posted

Probably :D

I'll try and grab some (better) pictures tomorrow and have a good walk round it. I glanced (and only glanced) at the history book and saw the same main dealer stamp on a lot of it. This of course could be crap as anyone with a mate at a garage can get things stamped up. There did seem to be some receipts etc so I'll make a note of them if you want and see what's actually been done. He bought it locally a couple of months back, I actually took him to the seller's house which is only about 3/4 mile away.

Just pm'd you by the way.

Got PM thanks.

Yeah, if you can get any more info without going to too much hassle that would be grand. I'd trust your opinion on it, you seem to give (humorously) honest descriptions of chod for sale!

Hmm, being unbiased about a Mondeo might be a tall order but I'll see what I can do

Shouldn't be too hard if it isn't a Mk2 :D:D

Right, bit more gen: it has folding mirrors, working air con, 6 CD multiple changer and cruise control. No invoices for any work done just the service book. He says it's MOT'd until June and had had new discs, pads, brakepipes and drop links before he got it which was about 3 months ago I think.

Update:

Has Six speed gearbox and auto sensor lights. Just been out to have a better look at it and it when it's being started up it sounds horrible. I'm no expert on these things but would suggest it'd probably want a starter motor too. Once started there's the sort of slight/light banging noise (for want of a better description) which pretty much disappears when the clutch is selected. Gear selection goes from difficult to perfectly fine which (to me) would suggest a clutch problem. Owner says it's because the DMF is knackered. Seems to drive ok (i was passenger) in the 500 yard trip we made in it but I defo wouldn't want to drive it far until it was sorted.

Interior looks GR9 for the mileage though it does need a clean which could be done time permitting says the vendor. Pictures to follow.

That's a lot of car for 600 sovs. Assuming you could just keep banging cheap used starters in, how long will a shagged DMF actually last? Solid flys are reckoned to be bad news - broken cranks etc.

Posted

Have to say if I had any money I'd be tempted to replace the starter and if quietened it down chuck it through the auctions. Still reckon the DMF wants doing though whatever happens.

Posted

My mate had one of these with a goosed DMF and it did exactly this. Rattled like anything and the starter occasionally wouldn't engage. If it's doing that I think it's pretty well down the road to failure although I've no idea what happens when it finally fails totally.

Posted

It won't be getting driven anywhere now, he only moved it a few hundred yards so I could get pictures, but he did say if anyone was interested he's let them try it on a short run to see what they think.

Posted

If a DMF fails it can exit through the side of the bellhousing or into the box, I have no experience of the Mondeo but my Octavia has the VAG solid mass conversion fitted when its DMF died and it is a million times better. Genuine parts so 2 year warranty.

Posted

Just stick a used DMF on it. I'd imagine it would probably be fine for a few years, by which time the Mondy will be on 250k and ready for the knackers yard anyway.

Here's an apparently nearly new one for £50

I really rate these Mondeos, very nice cars indeed.

"I'm out"...

For the rest of you lot considering it, my day of googling and phoning around gave a figure of about £650 for the DMF and fitting, and a complete lack of enthusiasm from the garage about doing it. It's also common to have to do the starter too, another £100 for that.

Solid flywheels are available, doesn't make it any cheaper the first time but subsequent clutch changes are cheaper. Probably won't matter on a 157k Mondeo as the next clutch will probably be just after it gets fragged.

In fact, nobody has anything nice to say about these. Plenty of common faults it seems and mentioning it at work gave a chorus of "you can have mine, it's crap" style comments.

Posted

They're not actually that bad (sorry to disappoint the J.C Wannabe/expert ) but I have to say they seem quite hard to shift. To be fair I'd imagine it's the same with most cars like this (no matter what the make) because the market is flooded with them and people shit themselves when faced with a repair bill like that.

I'd suggest it's worth not too far off his asking price in parts/weigh in though that seems crazy for what's quite a new car.

A 53 plate Mondeo in this kind of situation highlights exactly what's wrong with how cars are seen by todays throwaway society. That shape Mondeo won just about every plaudit possible when it was new, yet people would rather a dose of herpes than be associated with them today. I'd be quite happy if the government said "right, no more cars, whatever you've got now you have to keep running for the next five years, then we'll think about starting the factories again".

Nobody seems to bother fixing middle-age cars any more. Pretty soon the only people buying spare parts will be warranty departments.

Shit, have I ruined the thread?

Sold!

'I tried most of the local taxi firms who just laughed at me but in the end one of them bought it'.

Posted

Result. I suppose if a taxi firms running a fleet of these the garage they used can probably change them in about 15 minutes.

Posted

Some of them wouldn't touch it as the DMF problem is too much agro apparantly.

Posted

Mate of mine, just down the road has a silver Mondeo estate on an 06 plate that he got for around a grand last year.

It too had the DMF problem - total cost with fitting was £400 according to him.

I thought it was meant to be shockingly expensive....

Good noos on the sale. Exchanging a headache for £650 is always nice. Is it me, or is the 2001 on Mondeo nowhere near as Council as the first two? They are a nice car, but expect to see scrapyards brimming with them in another 2 years. They're one of those mass produced cars where almost every example will succumb to a very expensive and common problem.
