I love that Vega Major - surely one of Dinky's finest. There is a good plastic Hong Kong copy to look for, as well.

This thread reminds me how many awesome toys I binned, I look at so many I'd these pictures and remember having one.

That Bedford transporter for example. Red trailer with white ramps.

Ive got the Bedford TM, had it since the early 1980s. It currently has a Corgi SD1, Tr7, Matchbox Golf, Jeep and Matchbox Chevy stock car on it, all of which I have also owned at least as long. Very envious of the Siku Transporters!

I've got one of those Vega Majors which I converted into a Stock Car transporter about 37 years ago.No idea where it is though  :?

I think I could get back into the swing of collecting matchbox again. I've still got the ones I had as a kid. It's one thing that they still make that's as good as ever matchbox cars, they've got them in the poundland near me it's a ritual we have on a day off to go and buy one with sierraman jr as I did twenty odd years ago

oh had those got the eccurie one & just remembered I have the later ford transcontinental transporter, agree there great for increasing display space, as you'd prob guess mine are full of Cortina's.

have a pair of those plastic copies of the coach loved playing with them as a kid.

They arent really Matchbox any more though, just less attractive Hotwheels. The legal address underneath both makes is the same.

^^Agreed, but they still make nice castings unique to the Matchbox brand....When I was a nipper Hot Wheels just came out but were expensive and hard to find. Very fragile, too. I was shopping in Asda about 25 years ago when they got a load of the current stuff (well current then) in for 65p or something. Now got 300 of the bastards and along the way have collected two grand-kids who now will not accept any alternative to Hot Wheels!

What's nice is that they like the classic stuff and will grow up knowing what first gen Celicas and BMW 2002s look like...

Easy done, isn't it! I stop at variations just because I never really "collected" them, just bought ones I liked. Some of the graphics are a bit hard to stomach but some of the colourways are great. Keeping them in their blister cards doesn't help with space, either...

I had that weird looking Matchbox Superkings blue car transporter with the red fold down ramps, mine came with a beige Capri with a brown roof

Also received this today:

It's a 1962 Ford Galaxie promo by AMT. AMT made all Galaxies from 1959 to 1970 as Promos, as well as annual kits.
All of them were reissued over the decades, many of them several times. However, the last time we saw the '62 was in 1968.

So this is the first time since I'm in this hobby (40+ years), that I actually own an elusive '62. Was a bargain to boot.

Did someone say Dinky coaches?

Seeing these lovely AMT models reminded me I picked up a plakky Yank somewhere at a steam rally back in the summer. It was cheap but looked crap - ideal purchase then.

I put it in the misery cabinet in the downstairs toilet along with broken Huskies and unidentified Hong Kong-age. Later on I re-visited it and found it was made in Hong Kong by Ideal Toys. It had all kinds of pimpage stuck all over it which I actually considered pretty cool - bit like that SSK-piped Dinky Minx of Junkman's.

I got it out again tonight and realised it wasn't friction powered as I first thought but battery-driven. After a bit of bodgery with some kitchen foil packing pieces to cope with modern copper-top AA cells the bloody thing ran! Goes like a rocket too, there is a little lever to set the front wheels to left or right hand lock. Was clean as a whistle inside - no corrosion, muck, dust etc. I also found that the appendages all over it appear original as they are affixed through holes in the body and glue-crowned inside.

Thought the power steering brochure made an appropriate back-drop!

Now I need to know if there were any more in this "Ideal" range....MOAR S.i.M. purchasing is bound to follow.

I know I'm speaking too early, but I have inherited my Granddad's collection of vintage vans, all mint in box. From memory their either matchbox or Lledo. Is there much of a demand for them?

Posted

I had the same thing happen with a late Uncle's collection a couple of years ago. Unless the Yesteryear's or Matchbox models include any rare variations I am really sorry to say their value is likely to be virtually worthless. Lledo are almost unsaleable....Do some online research to make sure of course! I had about 120 of them - a few went at car boot sales but that was almost a big a ball-ache as Ebay. Eventually a dealer friend of mine took them in exchange for a handful of vintage die-cast projects but I notice he still has bloody loads of them left so possibly he was doing me a bit of a favour....

Posted

Across the FB diecast pages it comes up quite often that someone has inherited a collection of Lledo vintage cars. As M-R says there is next to no demand for them. They are quite attractive little models though and you might be better to sell them as a job lot at a boot sale or Ebay.

In other news, I recently bought a small haul of Corgi cars that were part of the huge BP promotion in about 1988. One example was a Jaguar XJ-S which has a metal base and a full interior. I also have a much earlier one with opaque windows, no interior, a plastic base and suspension. Its also a 'Juniors' version as opposed to a regular Corgi.

I have never seen another Corgi like the early one I have, other than a Starsky and Hutch Ford Torino. Anyone else have anything like this?
