Cool! Yeah I'll probably sell the tyreless one, don't really feel inclined to have every version at the mo. I have ordered the missing stickers though

Thursday Garden Table Meet.  Oh no, not more Aston Martins

These Maisto models are quite accurate and tidy for a 1/40 scaling, what with the effort on the wheels, light units, detailed folding seat interiors and opening doors.  But.. they are pretty-much worthless ?

AM Virage and  AM DB7

The tyres are shared with the DB6 - I was going to look to order a pair for the DB6. Might as well order four?  Funnily enough I remember it listed and had it on watch too, as well as the repro sticker.  World gets smaller, shocker

I was keeping back the Starter Unit for when I got hold of the matching car, to put together for when selling/on in the future. But you’ve beaten me to that with a double hitter

I added the painted bumper to the Fiesta.

I'm not sure whether to faff around making these steels fit the Fiesta, or to leave it on the originals. They are from a Lada, but are too wide.

I've also been playing with turning this Prairie into a replica of the one I used to own. Still need to add the tide line of black...

Here is what I'm trying to achieve. This car holds a special place in my heart, as it was the first Autoshite type car I took my girlfriend out in. She'd love another!

Forgot to add that if anybody fancies the 944 or 356, go ahead and invest a whole four quid apiece

I'd be interested in the 356, if there's been no other takers yet!

Trying to track down more of the Matchbox Dinkys, and although I'm not a huge Porsche fanboy that's the kinda price I can get behind...

...Corgi marketing pack...

Crikey, what a find! Thanks so much for those pics - yep, I think that would have been sent out to toy retailers by Corgi's marketing department, to alert them to new product lines... the tiny office in the model shop where I worked was overflowing with such mail-outs.

Very interested to see that the Corgi Centre range had a catalogue all of its own by 1989 - I have them shown in a 1988 trade catalogue, and it really threw me because I was totally unfamiliar with the line. I'd even wondered if it'd been pulled at the 11th hour and never hit the shelves, but apparently not - and the big Van Cleemput book on Corgi gives the range a passing mention too, describing it as a "wonderful toy" that won awards.

Although I was obsessively perusing the toy aisles in every shop I went to c.1989, I still don't remember ever seeing any of these. Nor have I found any since... most strange.

[Corgi Porsche 924 & 944]

@Datsuncog for confirmification.

I think the 944 is a completely new casting, compared to the 924... though I'm not sure why Corgi did this either. Possibly the 944 was designed to be slightly cheaper to make than the Mettoy-era predecessor, with a plastic base?

The same thing happened with the bodykitted Mercedes 190E, which had no relation to the earlier, non-bodykit version from 1984.

I'm just as confused!

Posted

No, it's definitely a different casting. Both nicely done though, and some kid took really nice care of them, the 924 in particular is absolutely mint. There's something strange going on with the paint on the front wing and bonnet though.. I assumed it was a casting flaw at first but it's definitely within the paint itself.

I'm experimenting a bit with Instagram again; although my general feelings about social media remain ambiguous, I do follow a few diecast folks and I've a half-cocked idea to try and profile a random 'diecast of the day' plucked from the shelf. So that's what I've been at for the past week or so.

Most of these you'll already have seen on these hallowed pages anyway; it's more of a way for me to keep a visual record of my collection along with the random bits of trivia I like to dig up from time to time about the model, the real-life counterpart, or both.

But I don't think I'd mentioned the Tomica Nissan Cedric taxi on here before - one of the few I held onto. So here y'go!

Oddly enough this was the next thing up for patio perusal. Now facing a new life in Norn Iron, the Dinky 356. The box is a bit warped and yellow but not bad for something that's got to be thirty or so years old.

Haha, that's blown my theory right out of the water!

Same base, then... with the '924' crudely erased on the not-quite-944.

I don't have one to hand, but I could've sworn that the first 924s from the late 70s (gold, rally decals, spotlight on the roof) had a metal base - or maybe I'm mistaken in that too?

I'd also give credence to AndrewE's theory about the Le Mans 924 GT - for 1985, the newly-reorganised Corgi seemed to be raiding the drawers in the design studio to knock out anything that could be packaged as 'new'. Just like the timing of the Supra - where the scale model appeared just when the real thing was being superseded  - I'd guess this was seen as a quick win at the time. Close enough to the 944 for an eight-year-old, was probably the thinking.

They added a front scoop and a small rear Luo spoiler to later versions of that Polo, I used to have one. I always preferred the standard version like yours though as I'd never seen a kitted one on the road.

Also, early ones had a sticker for a grille I think whereas later ones had the details cast on.

Correct! Cast grille on the green one.

It's sunny, it's Essex so we should have some Ford content. I can't even attempt to emulate RoadworkUK's elegant and nostalgic love letter of a few weeks ago, so all I'll say is that this (or, more precisely, my red example) is one of my all time favourites. Even at three or four its attention to detail enthralled me, the badges and the wheels in particular. This came from Bramz on here a couple of years ago with some lovely black pen detailing and a trim level downgrade of sorts.

Essex Escorts.. Probably not something one should Google. Or maybe it is, no judgement from here. Anyway these two are childhood relics and have survived rather well under the circumstances. The scratches on the bonnet and roof of the hatchback happened in 1988 when an older boy knocked it out of my hands when we were running a few cars down an earth bank in the front yard of my primary school. Must have pissed me off pretty thoroughly for the memory to be that fresh. B37XEV and B732XJY probably were Escorts too, I was that sort of child..

This, by way of contrast although still a Ford, is not the one I received for Christmas 1985. That example succumbed to a destructive period about five years later that claimed a few others and which I'm ashamed of even now. Still got the remains of the box somewhere but that suffered when some mice decided to take up residence in my Maestro VdP while it was in the shed.

Which sort of brings us to this, also referenced in Tenmil Socket's scans of yesterday. It always irritated me that they used the same wheels on this as the Popular, it just seemed to slightly spoil an otherwise very respectable model. Going off on a tangent, Wasses was a splendid toy, bicycle and fishing tackle shop in Colchester. A good portion of my toy cars would have come from there, the Corgis used to be lined up in the right hand window at child head height. Forced out of town after decades by the greedy local cuntcil, they're still going but only do fishing gear now.

In honour of market blokeys, I went out for the first time in three months to a market.  The Hitchin open air one, no less.  Fridays are supposed to be ‘Antiques & Collectables’ day so went over to see how the blokeys are getting on.  Not a terrible turnout of stalls surprisingly, and customers were thankfully sparse; so achieved a spoil or two.

MOY Rolls Royce Fire Engine is probably the only one my old Dad never had. It was in a crate of boxed-as-new MOY, for giveaway money

Ferrari 330P is an unknown built kit, missing screen and one exhaust but was 50p.  For chopping about into slot car.  Or throwing at the noisy neighbours.

More of the big Merc, after I’ve found out more about it

Coincidentally I've just been working on some of those Corgi Truckers. The pre-production samples look quite different from what was actually released, especially the Ford that has the wide wings of a heavyweight but by the time it reached production had turned into a narrow-winged 7.5-tonner. They do scrub up well though.
