I really want to get my hands on one of those, boxed. When I received Ian Kuah's legendary "Dream Cars" tome for Christmas 1988, I fawned over the Quasar like a seven year-old. Because I was seven.

One of the cars that I most want to see as a properly detailed, fully-opening 1:18 model.

I've been eyeing up a job lot of VWs on eBay for months, as there was an ERTL one among them I wanted to check out. It was too expensive, but then this appeared

Despite saying it's a 1200, the collector card on the back shows a 1302

Blister was already loose, so I removed it for a better look. It's....a little inaccurate to say the least!

Floor looks suspiciously generic

Came with a 911

Collector card shows a much later US spec car

This one's 4WD!

It might be a stationary display car, but there is a genuine 600bhp Group-B engine and gearbox in there

I bought a spare Shovit yesterday

As I felt it wanted a bit of extra detail. Then I spotted the box of Real Riders I bought when Mattel had a sale on, and it snowballed a bit

Base painted to look more like a metal premium version, and the same for the interior to represent aluminium panelling

Dinky effort isn't great under close scrutiny

Hot Wheels went for no grille on their latest one

The old one was very wide compared to the real deal

New Matchbox isn't bad (when are we getting a recolour?)

Minix is pretty good considering its size

The later Peugeot Oxia, that had Group C mechanicals, was a driver.

This is the only Vanguards saloon that I can find that has the basic car grille, all other Vanguards have the DeLuxe/Super full width one.

Oxford ice cream vans look sad.

Minicar 43 has a look of surprise.

I got one of these last week

I had not got it out of the box until now.

That grille/bumper/side lights combo looks poor. It is just like the original. I think it would look a lot better if the had cast the grille and lamps into the body.

The proportions look OK from the rear.

It never takes long for customers to turn up at a parked van.

As they used to say on the TV Times advert "I never knew there was so much in it".
