Been ferreting in the attic again and suddenly remembered a time when it was possible to purchase a 1:18 AutoArt model from a toy shop in Norwich for £14.99.

 

That won't even buy a pint of milk these days. Not from Waitrose, anyway.

 

So I got my camera out and walked a mile and a half to take photos.

 

 

 

 

 

P38 4.6HSE, arguably better built than the real thing.

More 1/43 scale chod purchased today from Hedingham Models in Braintree. Vanguards Mk2 facelift Grandad in 2.8i flavour, Cortinalindsline 2000E in Kermit green, Greenlight new shape Transvestite LWB, which was only a tenner, and a Kermit green partwork Fiat 127 mk1

Better photos of the latest dust gatherers. The Greenlight Transit is bloody heavy for what it is, even though the base is plastic. Note it's Yank spec with right hand side small numberplateness. Grandad has white wheels, which is why the colour looks washed out. Cortina looks nice, but its a Mk3 facelift, with the early dash, naughty Hornby! Fiat 127 is nice, got it because I like em, and it was cheap.

Deffo do not repaint it, and as mercrocker says, just replace the window. The paintjob gives it charm by the bucketload

Unfortunately, as you can see the paint is crap. It flakes off and has white crud underneath. Zinc pest?

 

Is it possible to repaint when the metal has done that, and if so do I need to treat it with anything first?

It does have a cute little lever underneath to make the back seats flip up and down though!

That's the Corgi one then. Much better than Matchbox, who seemed to get the proportions completely wrong.

It's not zinc pest, just the paint, likely been played with in the sandpit 😀 AFAIK Corgis have never suffered from this so you're grand. Nice model the Corgi Rancho, nicer than the Superkings one I have, although not as nice an the Bburago 1:24 scale one!

 

Zinc pest will crack and swell the metal and eventually crumble, not saveable sadly. I can guarantee that yours doesn't have it.

Plus one on the zinc pest, never seen any Corgi with it either. Sand may have lifted the paint and caused nearby bubbling but once its stripped you will see gleaming Mazak....

It does have an essence of sandpit about it, some crumbly brown crud around the detail on the base.

 

Of course, the fact it was bought in a tat shop less than a mile from the seaside means it was potentially someone with a metal detector who is the big winner here.

 

Still going to strip and repaint though. Probably beige. Unless someone steps in and says it's worth billions of quid.

 

Same shop has a Post Office Bedford CF in 1:43 which had a £16 sticker on so I reckon they provably research before pricing.

That XJS looks funky. I have a Corgi Rancho in green, it's a little corker, and as a nipper I had both the MBX superking and Corgi versions, the MBX one looked really skinny, and the hatch was unglazed and totally diecast, plus no opening front doors or floppy back seat. Matchbox phail!

Ta. A 34 year old man on Mistley quay taking photos of a toy car attracted quite a crowd, all of whom thought said gentleman was obviously a bit strange.

I asked around what my next slot car bodyshell should be from about 10 options that were buzzing around my head, most popular was the Lotus Esprit S1.

When I was a kid in the 1970s this was all you could get to share in Roger Moore's glamour


It was pretty good with missiles you could fire from the rear window and the way the rear fins twisted as they came out would later be copied by full size car makers with cupholders that pop out of the dashboard.

But it wasn't really a Lotus; it didn't have those wonderful slot mag wheels and of course on the carpet with all your other cars it looked a bit silly unless you parked it next to a Commer van and compared wheel spats.

There was no model kit in 1:32 so I started with a 3D CAD file which I tested with my chassis.





I created the alloy wheels and got the whole lot 3D printed.  I chose SLA rather than my usual SLS to see how the technology was doing.



A small amount of sanding, painting and the bodyshell is ready to cast



I made a female passenger as a resin part so the builder can choose if Bond is with her or alone.  Graphics were created and printed as waterslides.











I just need to write the build instructions and it's ready to go!  Start humming the theme tune to yourself now

which I got 3D printed. I used an SLS process as usual but with the optional polishing that cleans up the surface a little, just makes it a little smoother. I tried it on a chassis


And then made a 2-part silicone mold, here's the first one to come out




While the windows, interior, wheel centres and graphics were being made I did some more research into the car, with the bigger engine options they were a very quick car for the time, less than 8 seconds 0-60 I think!

I had a go at some whitewall tires, they're just done as paper graphics so the chances of them lasting a race is 0.000047%, but it looks pretty now and it'll do until I mask and paint them properly.
