1997 Scrapyard pictures

These pictures are of 'Hambleton Brothers' scrapyard at Caistor, in Lincolnshire. It closed down a few years ago.

This was one of my regular haunts for spare parts back in the day. As a yard it was great. This was because it was essentially a great big field and they never crushed anything themselves. Every couple of years or so, or when the price of scrap reached a high, they would get the contract crushers in and it would all go to Liverpool to be shipped out to Spain.

I went to get a heater matrix for my panda in July 1997 and I took these pictures on a whim. I remember buying the film at the garage on the way there.

I have posted them before, but it was a few 'forum purges' ago. Thought you might like to see them again.

This bad boy was the newest vehicle in the yard on a J plate

Where as this was one of the oldest...1965 C reg on a London plate. Still had it's original radio in it. IIRC, the beige Avenger in the background was a K reg and on a local 'FU' number.

I remember the Transit as being local as I would see it round Brigg. I think it said 'Cliff Bramber, Builder, Wrawby' in stick on numberplate letters. The reg was something like 'THE 22X'...

I got the radio aerial off this MK 1 Panda...

I got the front seats out of this Panda. They had blood on them :shock: . It washed out though, as they were the hammock style seats which you can strip and put through the washer.

Poorly Polo...

An attempt at an 'overall' view of the main yard...

One of the number of resident BX's...

A 'Fresh Grimsby Fish' van with the added text 'Fish Mobile - Turbot charged'...Hilarious.

Half of a Corsa was an unusual spot for 1997 rural Lincolnshire.

I knew the red Fiesta as it belonged to a friend of my sister. She'd just passed her test, the Fiesta was a nice old lady owner from new example (it came from Chester IIRC). Unfortunately, a school bus crashed into her in Brigg. :(

Great pictures, thanks for putting them back up.

The place looks rather neat, save for the Escort dump.

Top stuff! Well done for having the foresight to take them.

Looks very similar to Medler's down this way, except they didn't stack anything and the turnover was even slower.

Nice . I really enjoy looking at scrappy photo's 8) That Fiesta has by the looks of it an FM plate which would be right for Chester. Something else looked like it had an FM plate but can't find it now! Good to see a 910 Bluebird.

Great pics, thanks for reposting those as I must have missed them last time.

£20k worth of bay windows here:

I was gutted when this place shut down, many happy hours spent looking at tat on a saturday morning! Thanks for the pics! 8)

That's a proper scrappie! None of these polytunnel racks. Whereabouts in Caistor was it?

There used to be a similar place on Long Lane in Beverley - a field with a load of old cars in - but it closed down too a few years ago. Wish I had some pics ...

This is great. Thanks for sharing.

Only the Fiesta and Corsa under 10 years old. Scrapyard of today is much different, are cars less reliable or do people not like cars over 10 years old, or both?

Fantastic photos Vinny, It reminds me of Gunn Hill scrap yard in Colchester before it became Copart and full of racking, You'd tell the lad what part you need then you both would jump into a old shit heap like a Renault 5 or Polo which was full of tools and drive down to were the certain brand of car was before stripping it down and driving the shit heap back up to the reception.

I wish i took my camera with me back then. :(

That was Dedham, wasn't it? And it was utterly brilliant.

Superb! 97 must be about prime time for shite in a scrappy. Loads of stuff that would be worth £££s now.

Ace! 8)

Just the way scrappies used to be. There were a couple in Glasgow I used to enjoy wandering round, even if I wasn't particularly needing anything. One in Balmore Rd, another by the bakery in Possil Rd and probably my favourite when I was out that way, a big one at Shieldhall near Govan.

Any Glasgow-based shitists remember them?

1980s cars were a lot easier to fix, either by the owner or by your local small garage.

Helen Street..? Inside a big shed, think its mostly Oriental stuff they break now.

I think I remember going to the Balmore road one once, and could never find it again. Greenlaw Road in yoker had one that was great, including its row of 28 Ladas. There was one on South Street that was pretty decent too.

The one in Helen Street was good, as was the one in South Street, although it's long gone I think. Shame you can't go for a good rummage round a scrappy any more, I almost thought of it as a day out!
