Wheeler Dealers (again)

Watching an old Wheeler Dealers - 205 GTI - while working from home

How the hell can you cure a smokey engine by replacing the gear linkage...it's some kind of miracle!!

Witchcraft :)

I watched six old episodes over Christmas and they got away lightly with that Interceptor, all it needed was some welding, PAS pump replaced and an interior tidy up IIRC. Not bad for 5 grand.

The BMW 850 they did was a corker too.

Didn't the inventory include a cold start injector/5th injector that we never saw Edd fit?

Sorry to bring this thread back up, but I've just watched the Mazda MX5 episode and nearly coughed up my chips.

"These Compomotive wheels look amazing" as he crouches down by the front wheel which is an ENKEI, even has the ENKEI logo on it in big letters.

"We've changed the air filter and it's improved the exhaust note".

Eh?

My two Wheeler Dealers pet hates (while still really liking it)

1. 'Can I 'ear 'er run mate?' - Starts Engine, REVVV REVVV, turns off engine. 'Sounds a bit tappety mate' No wonder! You've just revved the nuts off a cold engine!

2. 'Now, I'm here in the middle of nowhere to look at some car (that you really like, just not in that colour/engine/spec) and I just need to find the owner' 'Ahh this must be 'im'. Bring in a man who was stood just off camera, clearly visible to Mike for the last minute.

Rant over. Can't wait for new series.

Fiat dino coupe episode was interesting :D

(series 10 number 1)

Aye, I quite enjoyed the Fiat Dino episode. Lovely seats - it looks like those sorts you could just sink into. I actually didn't mind the DIY wood centre console as it was (matched the dash wood inserts) and I would have happily lived with those orange carpets. Looked in great nick too. The new black ones just transformed the interior into a 'black hole' to me.

One thing I am disapointed with Wheeler Dealers though - the budgets in the last couple of series have been too high in my opinion. £10k plus in several cases now  I know the cars they have on there now are worth more anyway, but I was perfectly happy with the sub £5k chod.

Still enjoy it though and looking forward to the rest of the series. The Renault Alpine in particular...

Posted

The original sub-£1000 cars were alright.

The more recent ones are ridiculous and the so-called buyers were allegedly not buyers at all.

The "Brewer abroad" episodes are cringe-worthy, specially the French and German ones.

And apparently Paul is the real spanner monkey. Edd does the odd oil change for the camera... You heard it here folks.

But I'd watch it before Top Gear

Posted

Thats a shame actually, I only watch it for the Edd bits.

Everything Mke Brewer does to camera makes me cringe, it's just the amount of cringing that varies,

The whole show is cheesy and there are mechanical flaws and mistakes at every turn but it is real entertainment for the motoring masses. I think Brewer is brill as the stereotypical dodgey car dealer and Edd does a good impression of a laid back mechanic, although I have yet to meet one (probably my own fault through my choice of cars lol). :D

Exactly my thoughts, I have a horrible feeling those orange carpets might have been original too. Brewer can be a tasteless twerp. I think they ruined the wheels too, they looked much better and Corgi-toy like with the black painted bits.

Just watching the XK8 episode, £2k on brakes? Seriously???

And £150 on a matt black grille when Edd could have just sprayed the one already fitted for £2... :?

The show is almost like a parody of itself these days.

Anyone fancy winning/buying a car we have thrashed around a track/driven through 4 feet of mud?

downloading it now :D

The Alpine episode ended very abruptly indeed. Not the usual "phone's been ringing off the hook" followed by a "hold out yer aaaaaaand" but instead a "We found a buyer who didn't want to appear on camera, and we broken even in the end".....:|

Posted

another bit in the XK8 episode made me laugh, bloke wants £630 for 2 silencers and the grille, Brewer offers £600 and bloke says no, gotta be £630. Brewer says 'ya got yaself a deeel' No, you just bought something at the price asked.

Posted

I must admit to liking the whole thing but MB does grate on my nerves. He needs to stop eating those fry ups as Ed will be working on a WD hearse before too long.

The budget for these cars has bounced right into orbit. Way out of my league. Back to basics in the real world please guys - 1K to 2K would be just fine.

The french polisher they featured in the Mercedes ML show is one of my closest mates. Apparently Brewer is far less of a tosser in person, and the whole filming process was OK. Aa a bonus they paid cash when they collected the console.

Where is your mates workshop premises as it reminded me of a little place near Bourne End/High Wycombe I went to once for some chroming.

Bangors Lane (stop sniggering at the back...), Iver. There's loads of these old farmyard units in that sort of area.

I did like that XK8 they did. I wouldn't mind winning that - have a few months of pleasure out of it then punting it on in the summer.

The only real issue I had with what they done was the suspension change. Why make a comfortable car uncomfortable, just so it may corner marginally better? Drives me nuts, things like that... I'd have been happy with the standard set-up.

I'm interested in learning more about that carbon cleaning system gubbins Ed was using...

Aye, buying a whole new front grille when the front cold have just been prepped and sprayed for a fraction of the price...!

P.S - It's been Wheeler Dealer day on Discovery Shed. The Bond Bug is coming up next. I can't wait to see Mike make an a*rse of himself when he doesn't (or supposedly doesn't) where the engine is...

and you didn't think spending £2k on slightly better brakes was a waste of money too? It would have had good brakes already and is after all, a tourer.

ayd i absolutely love you

Did you notice he said they were secondhand too?

Agreed, I am pretty sure the one removed was near identical to the one that he put on with the exception of the black paint.

The show is almost like a parody of itself these days.

Amen to that Brother.

Watched the Merc SL episode again. The German bloke responds with derision to Brewer's attempt at "going in with the size 10's on"... :D

"Six thousand five hundred IS NO GOOD!!!!"

I suppose if you go all the way to Germany with a car trailer the seller knows you're going home with something...

It's a bit daft and obviously most of the situations are set up, but that's just how TV is made. Ultimately though, it has a positive attitude to the whole "old cars" thing and encourages people to have a crack at it themselves. I've had a good laugh at Brewer on numerous occasions, but you can tell he's genuinely enthusiastic about these old motors and likes turning them around, so he's alright in my book. Preferred when it was all about cheapo crud though, felt more like it was aimed at me.

It's perfectly good entertainment.... bearing in mind if it was factually correct, it would be dull as ditchwater. Watching Edd spend four episodes cleaning up a brake caliper and then swearing at a stuck exhaust clamp, no thanks. But yeah, to get the conclusion at the end of the show, it has been known for the "buyer" to be a production team member, or friend of a friend etc and the car remains unsold. Can't say it ruins it for me, that's only a minute or so at the end.

If you want a little more engineering guff, try the "...is born" series that gets shown. An MG Is Born was pretty good and showed quite a lot of detail, albeit of a rubbish car.

I also like that WD is pitched at the right level for my girlfriend, so I can happily watch two or three in a row without complaint.

The whole replace it rather than fix it thing does do my head in a bit. I would much rather see how to repair some of these parts rather than simply bin them and spend ££££ on a new one, as quite simply I cant afford to replace everything but do find some of the stuff helpful with my mechanically inept brain.

However I still laught everytime I see him after Jetronic posted this Wiki revision some time ago:

I don't know why they felt inclined to remove it as its so obviously true.
