The Liverturds! FINAL UPDATE of old Merseyside pictures.

The Wallasey shots? I agree! I think it's the lack of bustle. In the old pics, there are small shops, cars parked outside them, people going about their errands. In the "now" views, many of the shops are gone, there are yellow lines everywhere to discourage parking, and the people are at home, ordering stuff from Tesco Direct or Amazon.

Love the fact that you can still see the dodgy sill repair and underseal tidemark on that parade ADO 16, despite the garlands of crap, sorry decoration, all over it!

I was bored so I thought I'd give this thread a bump. There's a few pics of Widnes included that frankly, might of been taken yesterday.

Bonus points for anyone checking the DVLA for details.

Indeed.

GB&E also had a Vauxhall/Bedford dealers in Chester which morphed into Chester Engineering. They had a great old garage next to the canal then got taken over by Lookers who promptly sold the place and moved to Sealand Road. Typically the old site by the canal got made in to thousands of shitty 'apartments' which are probably nearly all empty, or resided in by twats/twatesses who drive Binis.

What's Lincolnshire registered AFW 605B then????

I kind of recognise it and I thought it might be a Auto Union F102, but the rear lights don't seem to match any in google images....

I love these old pics, thanks for posting! I was looking at some old pics of Hull but they're poor compared to these!

I like the shot of the bridge - taken from West Bank.

I lived down there until 1975, can still remember the kids playing on the prom. Don't think they do it anymore.

Isn't the bloke in the Jag Mk2 one of the Beatles? George Harrison?

A little Googling show that it is, here's a photo of him inside the same car.

Yep - as Lennon once quipped, 'George Harrison, Scouse of distinction'.

Here's a few more from the archive. Let's have a laugh at the decline of a once popular seaside resort.

I remember some of those things more than I thought I would. The Duke St shot particularly, as there's a Tobacco Leaf P6 similar to the ones my dad drove.

I remember Morland Motors, too. Went there.

Funnily enough, I looked at the Flat House pub this morning thinking "God that looks shabby now"..

Really weird seeing these pics, all the '70s ones onward are kicking in all kinds of memories.

Joking aside some areas (around Bootle iirc) looked like that a lot sooner ago than 1986.

Keep the pictures coming please, Warren, they're fantastic.

Galashiels used to be a lovely place, went there on holiday circa 1977. Random I know but still remember seeing a bus with the destination board showing 'Galasheils'.

This thread is ace, hats off to Warren, Pete and Cort16.

Bloody hell how odd. If you saw a three year old who''d pissed himself it was probably me.

This was the cinema in Gala orginally

galashiels_playhouse_arch.jpg

Much like how they panelled over old wooden doors with plywood in the 70's they did this, which is how I remember it.

Bingo, cinema, dancing. What a night out!

The bar at the bottle became "the biz" in the 80's full of neon, sticky carpets and watered down lager.

cta_galashiels_kingsway.jpg

Later they saw sense and stripped it back off again.

Got a slower day at the office than the norm and I've been enjoying this thread while having a nice cup of tea

When they changed "The Priv" (The Privateer Bar) into "The Biz" that was a real mistake.

I never really frequented "The Priv" that much but there were some real characters that hung out there.

I didn't think that the current facade of the Kingsway was the original - I thought it was just a facsimile of the the original?

If not, I've learned something today!

I actually liked the look of the 1970's plastic frontage - perhaps that was due to all my memories of strolling out of "Digby's" with some girl at the end of the night?

I was back in Scotland a few weeks back and note that they have revamped Market Square once more (shot with the buses) but it look like the council simply wasted more money making things no better than it was previously?

/\/\ GTD.... The original facade was just hidden by the Kingsway frontage, The 'priv' changed in late 83, the 'Talisman' became Digbys by April 83......I know because I workewd as the bar manager there at the time.....and in 77 when Billy was visiting I was working in 'Coopers' Fine Fare in the middle of channel street, which was built on the site of the original Pavillion cinema that burned down in the 60's......I could bore you endlessly with the name of the shops then and what they changed to over the years

anyway, back to shite, where was this pic taken?

onb14.jpg

is this anywhere near Southport? I ask as I have an identical Mk3 estate and it was registered in Southport, could it be mine in the pic !!!

I might know your face then by those accounts?

I actually worked in "Coopers" after school (Gala Academy) when I was 15~16 years old ('82ish).

I had a little Yamaha FS1E at the time that I used to park round the back.

Jim Moir (jildy! jildy!/gildy! gildy!...sp?) was the Manager and there was another guy John (bald headed)...

My first real night out in Gala climaxed at the Talisman - which was actually the last night of the Talisman at the ripe old age of 17 before it changed to Digbys - I don't remember too much about it now - mainly due to the 50p happy hour drinks that were being served

New Brighton promenade. Marine Park Mansions on Wellington Road are in the background.

GTD, Well, I was certainly working there at the Talisman on the last night....so I suspect I watched you depart down the stairs.. I remember Jimmy Moir and the AM well, I'll no doubt remember you from there also, though I gave that up in 78 as I got an apprenticeship.

WTC, damn..........mind you it could still be mine, it's not that far away after all
