It's a scam. I have spoken at length to somebody who fell for a similar thing involving a VW Camper Van. The words "tool" and "complete" can be applied to this man. He asked to go and see it. They said no. He wired them a few grand's worth of his parents' money anyway. He never heard anything again.

 

No shiter, or indeed anyone who knows the value of classic cars, would even entertain that.

Ah, my information is old! My nan got stung for CA$H DOLLAR a few years back, seems they have limited the price now. Fair doos, it might be worth ringing but make sure you don't sit on the phone for many hours.

about 4 years ago i was in the newsagents reading the yellow ads paper on the morning it came out and spotted an ad for 3 litre capri, needs work 200 quid, (could have been 300, i dont remember) bought the paper, back to the car and rang, it was about 8:30am. The phone was answered by a bloke who sounded annoyed, i asked about the capri and he shouted NO ITS NOT FOR SALE, then he claimed down a bit and told me he thought his neighbour had placed the ad as he had unsuccessfully complained to the council about the cappa on his drive he'd been getting phone calls since 5am about it.

Loads of 'Free ads' papers insist on putting premium rate "Phonesafe" numbers on bloody everything.

 

I reckon someone is getting revenge and a Mk1 Mex for £1000 is the perfect way of setting their phone on fire. I'd have rung it, but if there's still a Mex there then something mega hooky is going on. A Mex for a grand will sell in nano-seconds.

 

I had a Modena green N reg Mexico about 15 years ago. Paid £650 from the local auctions for it (they never put anything like a Mex through normally and it went through as the first lot), advertised it in the auto trader for £2k and my mobile never worked properly again after the hammering it got. From 6:45 Thursday morning for a good three weeks the bloody phone just rang constantly.

 

That was just after they'd finally been allowed into classic rallies. The beginning of people realising the true value of a Mk1 / 2 Escort.

I remember a couple of years ago there was an advert in the local 'quids in' (loot type paper) along the lines of.

 

"1978 Ford Escort 1600 Sport. yellow. complete car, stood in garage for 20 years, too good to scrap. £300 ono."

 

as you can imagine I dropped everyting and rang up straight away, but the number was dead. I even phoned the paper to see if they had the correct number and if it was a printing error, no joy.

 

Probably someones idea of a 'hilairious' wind up.

When my Dad had his garage in the late Eighties I bought a MK2 Capri for £75 which came in part exchange for a Talbot Sunbeam he was selling. The next day a punter part ex'd his MK2 Escort Harrier against a Fiat Uno, my dad gave him £125 for it. I had my "life" savings tied up in the Capri so had to pass. Oh if you could turn back time.....
