  1. @warren t claim, do you/the industry think that banning cross-border hiring will really happen? Asking for a friend* who can't really be arsed paying an extra £2-300 and doing a practical driving test to get a local council badge. Another question I had was on tax, do you know of many drivers operating as a limited company? I am a 40% taxpayer in my day job therefore would pay 40% on any profits if ubering for a 2nd job which I would like to avoid. I have seen a couple of places online offering Ltd as a service, just wondered how common it is in practice and if you know of anyone who tried it and got HMRC reamed considering that the "business" is in effect 1 man working for 1 ridesharing app.
  2. Swings and roundabouts on the tunnel, we have had some OK trips through in the last couple of years but also some long waits, both sides. Depends a bit on how busy it is I reckon.
  3. I somehow decided it would be a 70l tank. As such I revise my guess to 52.58mpg
  4. Somewhere between 45.2 and 48.68 mpg depending how brave you were in running it down to empty.
  5. Needs a bit more cement smeared on the neighbouring flags if you ask me
  6. If it's anything like my A3 and A4 its the Torx you describe plus possibly a 10mm hex somewhere under the headlight which is accessed from inside the wing/wheelarch liner. Sharp tug to unclip from the clips on the side and watch out for washer related gubbins.
  7. First dibs on the Golf please if you do go down that route.
  8. If over 40 years old no MOT required. If the bike or car has a NOVA it's generally very easy to register, maybe people assume that a buyer would like to be the first UK owner rather than the importer registering it and adding a name to the logbook?
  9. You have to have some money and apply for a visa but it seems the answer is pretty much, yes. https://iasservices.org.uk/moving-to-portugal-from-the-uk/
  10. I went on holiday to Portugal and there was a surprising amount of old rammel just being used as daily transport, R4 and 5, 2CVs etc. Where we went in the Algarve they reckoned they only get 2 weeks rain a year, that plus zero road salt means nothing seems to rust much and I reckon there are a lower % of people who are engaged in the love island/new build house/£750 a month rented premium* SUV lifestyle.
  11. Don't tell me that, I've ordered the block one without really investigating. This is a CFFB engine, dunno what that means though.
  12. On the Vespas, they are speed limited to 78 on the later 300s. You can get a different ABS ring which unlocks more like 85. Mine is non-ABS, I'll have to test the top speed and get back to you. In other news, these common rail TDIs seem pretty good TBH, I can see why they sold so many. That is from a morning of general running around town in 30 and 40 limits. Temperature as you can see is still running cold so ordered a thermostat. Luckily it looks better for access than the TFSI although it is in the same place, I wonder if they use a common block? I'd be tempted by a Mk6 Golf GTD with the 170hp version but they seem to start about £4k which is a lot for a car that could be legislated out of most cities in a few years.
  13. I think under french law if it fails the CT then it's a case of "bof" and you can still drive it for a number of weeks or days while waiting for the village garage to open next Tuesday and fix it for you. So shouldn't stop you driving it home from a legal perspective.
  14. I thought the casual 929 post the other day was a pretty big comeback but this is gonna absolutely shatter the shitedaq crockmarket when this happens. A trip like this is living everyone's dream, chodspeed.
  15. I've not been out on it that much TBF but they are good. Acceleration wise they are pretty quick off the line and up to about 30-40 then 40-60 is OK and they do take a bit longer to wind up from 60+. I think the GTS is quite a large and heavy lump TBH so I would be interested to see how it goes in a royal alloy if they are lighter. The new Dragster 300, it it ever appears, is using the new HPE version of this and should weigh a lot less so that should be a quick scooter.
  16. Thanks, TBH since I tightened up that bolt on the gear linkage the code doesn't seem to have come back, so maybe the neutral position was actually implausible due to all the slop in the linkage.
  17. Downgrading the cam chain to a weedy simplex effort you would be dubious about running on your bicycle.
  18. New car means new fixing. Went to fit my new temperature sensor. It was just unplugged? I've reconnected it and I'll see how we go, the readings on VCDS seem sensible. Had a look at the gear linkage which had loads of side to side play when in gear and was difficult to get 1-2/5-6. This bolt was really loose? Tightened it up and we seem to be all good. Love me a free fix.
  19. You jest but if you buy one off eBay for £150, that is gonna be basically what's inside
  20. Although it does look like a mod can reinstate a deleted post as it was just done with L1s demo strop thread about cheap electric cars. I guess if we decide not to do anything, as the poll seems to suggest, we could always just request a modmin to reinstate a thread if it's got a decent amount of contributions on and will be missed? Either way we are not going to see the scenario too often but FWIW I voted for post deletion but not threads. If you want to flounce, you can still delete/edit your posts in a thread, arguably this gets you even more attention than just deleting the whole thread so it's a win/win
  21. Anyway had an hour spare between child activities tonight so had a quick bash at the seats. They were quite rank. Didn't really have the best selection of equipment, a hand brush and some sort of car shampoo in cold water, plus a wet vac. They've come up better but there are definitely some stains that need doing again.
  22. Still, better than welding the bastard up every other MOT which would have been my life if I kept the previous 2004 Vito.
  23. Yeah the van is a 2010 with the OM651 engine so probably the same. It's on 197k, I got it on 190. The chain was noisy on startup so I put the revised tensioner in which quietened it down at startup. The van man said then he reckoned he could hear the chain but I couldn't so opted to not spend a grand or whatever it would be at random. I was considering not doing it to try and keep the bill down but it's only going to add maybe £3-400 while the engine is out so it's getting done. Seems like all the manufacturers went down the "Shimano 9-speed" route for camchains as well as putting them at the back of the engine around the same time, I hope whoever signed off on that shit got fired out of a cannon when they started going ping.
  24. Anyway the shitlist so far for the A3: Needs a thermostat Service due - £8 Mann filter on the way and plenty oil in stock from the Mannol offer Gear linkage seems a bit dodge, there are various faults stored for neutral sensor, I think there might be some sort of bush needed on the gearbox end Temp sensor needed (£10 Febi) Smells of dog and seats quite rank, in need of a scrub and wetvac Was missing a parcel shelf but already replaced on the way back to work (£20) Cambelt roulette (replaced in 2015 about 80k miles ago) A Febi thermostat is £50 and hopefully less painful to do than the TFSI was, will do the rest and look into this after payday. Cambelt maybe not, will have a look at it at least. It did 35mpg on the way home according to the OBC, hopefully this would be a bit more with faults fixed and stop/start working.
