  1. When it first started doing it, I moved the coil from cylinder 1 to cylinder 2 and the misfire stayed on 1. I guess all the coils could be marginal in a way that only shows up on #1, I am going to try another set of coils when I have my mates TT here to do the walnut blasting. It would be sensible to change the coils and plugs as a precaution but it's £100+ of parts.
  2. Car put the EML on today, codes for multiple/random misfire and misfire cylinder 1, as expected. I did think to check the fuel trims before deleting the codes as deleting the codes resets the fuel trims. I had some lingering thoughts that maybe it could still be the fuel injector somehow. Long term trim at idle of 0.3% is pretty good TBH. I did watch the short term trims and you can see it going negative when it misfires but I am now fairly certain that the injector is doing it's job correctly and the source must be mechanical or sparks, as surely if the injector was under/over injecting at idle you would see it in the long term trims? @SiC what do you reckon? I still never did a leakdown test so will do that next when it's less freezing.
  3. Has Warren started a new AS trend? Is the MG6 the Goona II of 2024? One can but hope.
  4. I like how the sales pitch mentions nothing at all about the car, and just focusses on the new tyres
  5. If it was nearer me I would have bought it instead of mine, as I like red.
  6. Wiki says similar to the mk6 Golf, the regular 2.0TSI is EA888 and the Scirocco R was EA113/CDL to the end. Looks like the R is rarer again though and commands a premium.
  7. Most of these that Si is looking at are performance models, the GTI being roughly the equivalent of a Focus ST and a 2010 ST would appear to also be £4-8k. I'm sure you could get a An Car 2010 Golf with a petrol or tdi for £1500-2000. @SiC I do like the look of a Scirocco, the rear seat wouldn't be great for me as I do actually transport 2 kids in booster seats in the back. I think you are going to struggle with the fact that the cars you're looking at are just a more valeted version of the private sale cars for a couple of grand less. I don't believe for a second that they all sound lumpy or misfire on idle, if you are paying a premium at a dealer the car needs to be right. Enginewise t'internet says all mk6 Golf are EA888 except edition 35 which still use the CDL. Maybe you could look for an edition 30 or 35, they come with an S3 engine so 260hp and presumably a few other goodies as well. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/394935267890 I'm not sure that the EA888 is especially worse, it just trades some failure points (cam follower) for others (shitty cam chain)
  8. I do at least feel like I've learnt a lot about them, I certainly wouldn't buy another without doing a compression test and scanning it with VCDS.
  9. Yeah going well really, I never posted back after the snake oil. Result was that it did test 190psi for compression after the snake oil, but it's made no difference to the idle misfire. Perhaps the cylinder was still a bit wet with the stuff and it's not an accurate test. I'm going to just live with it, it's not burning oil or fouling the plugs so it can't be that bad. I'm walnut blasting my mates TT which has R8 coils so I will borrow those and maybe put new plugs on just in case I get a miracle. And perhaps one day I might swap the injector from cyl 1 to 2 just in case there is some issue on #1 that didn't show up on the clean/test? Life with it is pretty good really, I did get a speeding ticket last week and the android head unit keeps cutting out which is annoying but not really the cars fault. I have been idly looking at sportbacks and saloon S3s but you're talking at least double the price. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/266603094354 I did also start out looking at GTis but I thought they were very expensive for what they were. A high mileage mk5 with some issues should be like £1000 in my book but I guess they must break well. Seems like the absolute floor price for a running GTi is about £17-1800? And for a 3 door S3 I think the breakers pay about £3000. Perhaps a massive generalisation but I felt the GTis in my distance range (which TBF includes Rochdale and Bradford) were rough cars that hadn't been looked after. S3s seemed to be better maintained. I'm sure you could get a nice GTi you'd be happy with but like you say lots of them are S3 money other than the odd bargain. This one is more your end of the country than mine, it was for sale when I bought mine so might be open to offers. Big miles but looks like a clean standard car. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/196175824762
  10. A car this classy surely needs a random GmbH and a Munchen on the plate holders: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/363547585900
  11. We had a 147 with the poor persons 120hp JTD and it ended up getting punted on due to Old Diesel Malady. Ran a bit shit, slightly better with the MAF unplugged but sometimes just died when the wife was trying to drive it out of a junction. It had no codes and the injectors seemed OK from a leakoff test so it was either a lengthy course of parts darts or punting it on so we went with option B. Not sure if JTDs are especially worse than any other similar age diesel, but once they start playing up it's bad times. Well played with the RR and sad to hear you never got the Jag running right, but it's good news that you didn't lose out on it too much.
  12. It's one of three, there is one more zoomed in where you can see the number plate but none of them are better quality than you would have got out of a 2003 Sony Ericsson.
  13. Apparently there are other locations near me where they are also out at 6-7am. Would expect it to be a strictly day shift 9-5 sort of effort.
  14. West Yorkshire Police apparently out catching speeders with a 0.3 megapixel USB webcam? There is an accompanying zoomed photo where there is sufficient POTATO POWER to read the plate. It was me so I've just copped for it but doesn't seem like this level of imagery would be any use in a case where someone is claiming it wasn't them.

    TIG WELDING

Most of these cheaper machines are DC only so can't do aluminium or anything other than steel. Basically an inverter stick/MMA welder with a TIG torch and some of the better ones have high frequency start.
  16. Gonna guess at a diesel as it's showing 21mpg on the dash
  17. I ordered some seafoam off Amazon and chucked it down cyl 1 today. I've turned the engine over with a ratchet a couple of times and also had to top it up after it all disappeared. Whether this will do anything who knows but it's worth it for £17. I'm going to do as this guy does and leave it in for about 24h, he's got a few videos and claims to have recovered misfire/compression issues with seafoam on at least 2 different cars. I also had to assume the @Kiltox position to change a light bulb, they're xenons innit and even though you can just about get your hand to the hole, you can't get XXL meat hooks in there to disconnect the wire from the bulb to get it out. If the snake oil does nothing for my compression then it's just getting driven as is, I have no time/money/appetite for a full on rebuild. Not to mention, the van is now bothering me for attention with an engine light and this alarming noise (ignition is on, engine is not running) The code is for the throttle valve and from what I can tell it's buried somewhere under that EGR cooler. There is a video on YouTube where a bloke replaces one on an E-class, it's time lapse and over an hour and a half long. This may be getting farmed out unless access from underneath or something turns out to be possible.
  18. They're quite a common size, I paid something like £90 a corner for Michelin PS4 for my Audi, I reckon ditchfinders should be achievable for £40 or so. Everything comes on 18,19 or 20 wheels nowadays so actually a 225/40/18 is like trying to buy a 205/55/16 in 2005.
  19. Anyone done anything with this? I have signed up for a free trial of the API from UKVD, I'd like to try building a little website to do plate change checks for 49p or whatever but I've as much chance of building a JSON query as I have of beating Usain Bolt over 100m. Any good guides or suggestions of the simplest way to get something based on this up and running?
  20. Yeah you're right, I've lived with worse faults and never investigated them on other cars but I've started now. I think I might try some snake oil, this video makes it look both easy and miraculous.
  21. Yes there are a couple of american threads about different engines where they recommend dumping some sort of solvent down the bore to free up rings, in combination with a oil additive. That Rislone stuff is more of an oil thickener so probably wouldn't work the same way. While it's driving OK other than the minor miss at idle I don't think I'll take it to bits, I'll look into the snake oil options to see if there is anything that looks worth bothering with.
  22. I've no idea to be honest. Need to check the level, I've only done maybe 5-600 miles in it so hard to tell.
  23. I did order a USB camera, its pretty rubbish but that is what you get for £6. I'll try the leakdown test, hopefully it can at least prove there aren't any exhaust valve leaks. It is due for an oil change, I wonder if it's worth trying some snake oil? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/166227562115 DAP on youtube did a video testing a couple of snake oils and they did see some level of increased compression from it, they also stripped an engine and found that it was carbon clogging up the oil control rings rather than bore damage suggesting at least potential for a chemical of some sort to work. Otherwise it's probably £200 worth of bits to get into it and change the rings which isn't awful, it's more the fact it would probably take me months to complete.
  24. Laser tools muthafucka, getting some sensible results now although not what I wanted to see. So I'm calling that 160-192-192-195. Cylinder 1 goes up to 192 with some oil down it so rings/bore issue on cylinder 1? I did buy a leakdown tester so probably best to try that before tearing into it just to confirm I don't also have a valve issue on that cylinder?
  25. Need a race transporter? https://www.carandclassic.com/car/C1673283
