Liverpool 'Large Objects Collection' museum

Anyone remember this? It was located on the Albert Dock during the 80's and 90's, and stored things like this:

Basically, 'The Museum of Mechanical Shite' it could be called, it held all manner of things, from the first Ford Escort off the production line, to a printing press, to a proper satellite and space rocket. I went twice in my childhood, but they closed it down and demolished the building. We did some investigating over HERE and discovered all the stuff was in storage and a visit is arranged for next year.

Put simply, the most awesome museum I've ever been in. :)

I do indeed remember it. There was a weird mirror set-up in there that gave me a full on side view of my nose. That was rather distressing. The chap who built most of the stuff is still knocking about, I can't remember his name but he goes to a tyre place I go and I've had a few interesting chats with him. Clever bugger.

I'm well into my traction engines and they've got some tasty stuff hidden there, nice to know you can visit still.

So is this place still around? Don't normally like museums, but this place is much more like it.

That looks superb! Be very interested to see pictures from your visit.

Some sort of AS visit may well be in order I think.A group of 10 shouldnt be too hard to organise - I even think there are enough of us "oop north" to form a party.By the looks of the "wirral" thread forum its shut for roof works untill into the New Year, but looks like a nice Feb half Term meet up, bring the (not too) young uns too and let them sample some large shite.Excellent.

+ tentative 3 grumpy old men in my parish (pending other commitments) if this gets off the ground. Wirral's not too far for me :D

Mrs Seth has memories of going there. I had a holiday up there with my folks in teh early nineties too and its the kind of place we'd have gone but we weren't there long and maybe it was off the regular radar of attractions?Anyhow, with the in-laws not far away I could be up for a group visit if dates work out with ickle Seth's school hols or something. :D

There's also a something called Wirral Transport Museum a trip across the water on the ferry that has similar stuff like buses and old-new cars:

I've never been there though.

Also this, which is on the way out of the wirral, but think it's more '100 years of motoring heritage' (eg Jaguar e-types etc)

Not Liverpool in fact about 100 miles south, in the Shadow of Aston Villa's ground is this:

Aston Manor Transport Museum, inside an old tram shed; you can see the tracks still there 8) Although it now has a cash crisis with Birmingham Council no longer prepared to pay the rent, it has never had the resources to get tarted up so remains a proper museum and not a 'visitor experience'

I would love to think there are still such places still dotted all round the country. Any more for Autoshite Tours. :)

Mouldsworth is ace, long time since I've been and really need to go back there.Have they still got that bubble car that was found in a lock up garage in Chester yonks back?Maybe we really should have an AS NW day out soon, perhaps visit one or two museums and have a sort of 'coffee morning' type affair with a visit to a Little Thief or similar?

Birkenhead Beer Festival was held there at least once in the mid nineties. I've vague recollections of standing amongst illuminated trams with nice beer. I'd quite like to see it sober too :D

Kind of breathing life into an old thread Hopefully it will go down well with everyone.Since we have a Autoshite stickie about a big meet,Maybe before the grand event of the meet the people in the NW would like to do as already mentioned on this thread and have a smaller meet.I quote cavette"Maybe we really should have an AS NW day out soon, perhaps visit one or two museums and have a sort of 'coffee morning' type affair with a visit to a Little Thief or similar?"Okay the weather isn't greatBut as a rough idea ... who in the North West would be up for it ?

Albert Dock my arse! The museum was located in what used to be the ferry terminal at Princes Dock. I think the shop part (if there was a shop) was in what used to be the old waiting/admin area. I went there quite a lot and should have two leaflets about it

Looks like a holy thread revival, but interesting one at that. What was the outcome, and why is Humber Sceptre red?!

I wouldn't even know how to Albert Dock your arse, but it sounds like something that would hurt.

Holy thread revival indeed :) Three years ago it finally left Birmingham and moved to Aldridge (just North of Walsall) and shortly after I got involved as a volunteer and have been helping out there since. It is now in a modern industrial building, which means that we can display the exhibits better, including the compulsory* shop-front background.  There have been changes in the vehicles, we even have the only survivor of the first batch of WMT accessible buses (Optare Excel 693). Only thing that hasn't changed is the ongoing cash crisis :(

How have the other museums mentioned got on?

 Humber Sceptre red?!

He's one of the site founder/admins (above Cavcraft and Trigger). Is inactive these days though.

There's Electric Leyland too that shows up very occasionally.

Large Objects Collection...

What the fuck is a museum full of my exes doing down in Liverpool?!

Those of you who knew me on the other forum will get that, hopefully.

I enquired a couple of years ago after the red mk3 escort they used to have, they still have it and I was asked to book a visit to the storage site but never got round to it and would love to if any local Merseysider's fancy a visit
