I'm a bit late to this thread, but it's awesome - thank you!

I love the idea of putting your car on a train; maybe because the idea of driving your A30 several hundred miles is akin to suggesting you drive it to Mars. Got any film of an Airbridge? Driving your car inside a cronky old plane is solid gold shite.

I wonder how much of that stuff on roofracks actually made it to the destination. I can remember as a kid all our clothes in our cardboard suitcases getting absolutely soaked on the roof of Dad's Renault Dauphine when it poured with rain.

Great stuff - keep up the good work :)

'Scene' is apparently nothing new, what with all that shit on the roofracks...:wink:

I'd love to have wallpaper made with all these screenshots and put it all over the walls of my garage, such great material.

If only I had a garage.

Vin, these are freakin' awesome!!! I must get on Amazon and get this lot. Many thanks for trawling through and posting.

How about 'The Riviera Touch' with Morecambe & Wise - they fly with their old jalopy to the south of France :)

Mash, if you want to see 'Give your car a holiday' it's on this BTF collection - Volume 9 'Just the Ticket'

Hello Shiters. Another update for you.

Let's have another 'Look at Life'. This edition is from November 1964 and is titled 'Living with Cars'

It's a nine minute film about the increasing number of cars and how society is having to deal with it. It centres on London, Norwich and Cumbernauld.

There are some cars which I don't recognise so I'll be asking for a bit of help indentifying them...

The overhead shots that start the film are Oxford Street.

vlcsnap-2011-11-08-21h03m24s10-1.png

Is the red car at the bottom a Ford Taunus? Also note the VW Beetle. I'll be keeping a tally as we go - Beetle 1

vlcsnap-2011-11-08-21h03m40s146-1.png

I think the white car above is a Fiat 1100. Not sure though. Any ideas? The front of it is under the 'at' in the first shot.

White Fiat is an 1800.

Convertible looks like a Healey 3000 with a boot rack thingy.

:)

Posted

The white convertible is a Sunbeam Alpine.

The Land Yacht is a 1959 Ford Fairlane.

The "Skoda" is a Vauxhall Velox or possibly Cresta.

My heaven? Norwich, apparently!

vlcsnap-2011-11-08-21h40m22s196.png

Not often you get two PA Crestas in the same pic...

Cumbernauld looks an awful lot like Skelmersdale, which probably explains a lot.

What is it with the Beetle count? I spotted at least 4 Austin A40s in those grabs! :D

Posted

DSDriver - Fiat 1800 hadn't crossed my mind. Thanks

Eddy - I know the sunbeam is a sunbeam :D . It's the white cabriolet in the screen shot above. Seems to be slab sided with an upright rear panel and square number plate....Also I didn't think you liked ADO16s...(might be some one else though... :? )

And the Beetle Count?? No reason really. I just thought it unusual that in all the footage there were 9 'Foreign' cars of all one type. Whereas it's not unusual that there are 4 A40s as they are British. If the 4 A40s were in a German film of the time then it would be....If you get my drift

What a chump I am, I was looking at the wrong picture for the white convertible. I think it's another Fiat, a 1500. Have a gander at this and see what you think

NSU Prinz 30. Thanks Michiel. Now I know what it is, I googled it. It's a funny looking thing. Seems they sold them in the UK in RHD form too. Wonder if there are any survivors :?:

Yep, I'll go with that as well, the shape of the wheel arch and the line going forward from it. I was nearly there, just barking up the wrong eyetie arberi.

That DS (Slough-built; the angle of the number plate gives it away) must be one of the oldest ones in the country by now, if not the oldest. I wonder if it's on the show circuit?

One word Vin (well two) THANK YOU. I have fond memories of any motorail, Paddington had the last one (the dock was Platform 1) but even when it was running I never caught anything being loaded onto it, except passengers. I'm sure the covered cartics went off empty. Like anything I was more intrested in my Isolation and how many earth poles I needed than a decaying travel service. I still work with fella's how have safegaurded travel facalities (got to be a pre 87 employe I think) on the ferries, from when they were BR.

As the lad scooters of into the distance, the commentator states that in 30 years time, the traffic will be so bad that commuters could be going to work on kiddies scooters :lol::lol::lol:

Yes, I did wonder if it is on the show circuit and known to enthusiasts. Maybe DSDriver will know...????

Can I just say, THANK YOU, Vin. What an amazing thread. I've just spent an hour poring through that lot and enjoyed every minute of it.

May I use one or two for a Blog on AROnline to point back here please?

Brilliant Thread Vin, wel done mate, first class.

I remember riding a PX3 from Putney to Aldershott once - took me an hour and a half and by the end of it my arse felt like it had been kicked by a donkey. Reminded me that my late father would ride a scooter from Inverness to Edinburgh in 1965-66 every weekend - including the winter - to see my mum when they were courtin - that was before the new A9 was built. Mum tells the story of one December night when it took him 16 hours - he turned up at 5 in the morning and had to be chipped off the bike and treated for frost bite on his cheeks (no - not his face cheeks)

Superb stuff, thank you for taking the time and trouble to provide me with an enjoyable bit of lunchtime viewing. Incredible variety of stuff on the roads back then.

The Norwich stills were particularly good, great to see all those locally-registered cars trundling around roads I know.

Erm... I've only been to one rally this year and that was the DS and SM rally, I have looked through my pics without any success which doesn't mean it wasn't there. It was persisting down on the Sunday so most of my pics are of people taking shelter in the clubhouse.

I did snap this little beauty rising to the occasion, which shows how the front of an early French DS differs from the Slough assembled cars.
