Autocar wanted - 29 Jan 1986

Has anyone got a copy of Autocar 29 Jan 1986 knocking about that they don't need? Contains a road text of the BX 19RD estate funnily enough as well as some MkIV Escort porn on the front cover.

Made the mistake of buying just that report on Ebay but then got sent it with pages missing AND it makes me feel dirty for buying a butchered magazine. Quite interested in all the other stuff really...

I know how you feel about butchered magazines, When I'm scanning mine i sometimes feel like crying when a page comes unstuck.

I really must get out more.

I have some Autocars from the 1940s which are still happily stapled together yet all the 1970s ones are a page turn away from bursting apart. They're incredibly difficult to scan without the bind breaking.

if you waft the mag over steam (boiling kettle usually works ok) with the relevant pages open, the glue is much more pliable and less likely to crack while pressed down to scan. not too much steam though, or the pages will ripple

I scanned some 1950s and 60s US hotrod mags like this and had no cracking spines or loose pages once steamed. I also press crumpled vintage mags & newspapers with an electric steam iron on the 'silk' setting to tidy them up

"One major advantage of running a diesel car for the general motorist is that there is much less to go wrong"

That's evolution for you!

I recently bought a load of Practical Motorist magazines from the late '60s/early '70s, excellent stuff for old school repair tales etc but the previous owner removed all the contents pages, presumably to create some sort of index. Arghh!

Notice the bottom right picture shows an Auto transmission, and a picture displaying shift pattern for a manual....

^ I noticed that too.

I never realised the indicators were actually a switch! Call me dull but i think I would prefer the newer BX with the more conventional stalks and controls.

Posted

You're dull! The rocker switches take some getting used to, but I prefer them to stalks. Ask me again once I've clocked up a few thousand miles in my BX though...

Are you sure about that? i think what you reckon is the auto trans, is actually the height adjustment for the suspension.

No, he's right. How bizzare! Height controller is next to the handbrake, but look right at the top of the pic and you can see an automatic shift pattern, despite their being a manual sticker as well! They did make 1.9 diesel autos(not for those in a hurry...), but not until the facelift.

So the car on test is a manual then, not an auto? I'm confused!

Looks like a manual to me (plus it says "Automatic - N/A" in the equipment list).

I don't know much about BX, or citroen autoboxes, but would it not be P,R,N,D,1,2 like most other stuff. If not, what does A,3,2,1 mean??

IIRC the diesel auto BX went on sale a bit later - in 1988 I believe?

I've no idea what the A stands for, but that's pretty normal for French tin of that age. Pretty sure my CX was the same. Maybe it just stands for automatique!

The BX diesel auto did indeed come along later. I can only presume they needed to fill the space and so just used a petrol auto shot, and hoped no-one would notice. Though I'm not sure why that would have a small sticker showing the manual positions...

That must be it. Instead of 'Drive' (as opposed to the other gears that make your car fly), they put "selection Automatique".
