1978 B310 Datsun Sunny 140Y Coupe......... MINE :-)

Hi all...... Me again!!

Well its happened again!! All logic and plans went out the window because a cool Jap car became avaliable in the Classifieds lol.

I was looking for something smooth and sensible and a little bigger with a bit of badge snobbery like a merc or something........... So i ended up buying a brown Datsun

As you all know by now, Retro Jap is always at the top of my list so its a no-brainer really lol ;)

Well here she is.............

Its a 1978 Pre-Facelift B310 Datsun Sunny 140Y Coupe which I believe are pretty rare over here now??!!

It has the A14 1400 engine mated with a 5 speed manual gearbox with Dogleg First to make it interesting lol.

I picked it up from Westcountry Classics, (nice chaps), near Penzance in Cornwall and they got it off an elderly lady that has been its only owner since new!! Yes I am the second owner :D

Its done 70500 miles and is a pretty solid car being garaged all its life.

Unfortunately its not perfect with a bit of a knock on the front corner and some badly matched paint on one side........... all fixable tho. The dreadded rot seems to pretty fairly at bay with only a few blisters about the car and I believe only had 2 patches of welding ever! Inside is Mint tho 8)

It also came with some "British Made" dealer option alloy wheels from new and I have a full set of 5!! Ill probably wack on some of my spare Jappy rims tho ;D.

She drives pretty well for an old car too and was happilly sat at 70mph on the way home to Plymouth for 80 miles. Good on fuel too!

Well enough of the chat........... you want some pics...............

I don't remember ever seeing one of these in the flesh - I think a neighbour of my grandparents might have had an orange one back in the 1970's.

Anyway, nice motor - I like the wheels, just get them reconditioned?

You could leave the mis-matched paint & call it patina or rat...

Folk spend thousands trying to re-create that.

It's very nice & I've not seen one for a yonk.

It doesn really look Ratty as its good paint............. just totally the wrong colour and badly blended. I do want it to look tidy ish if I can :D

Oh cool! 8) It is difficult to recall these from my younger years but about 20+ years ago neighbours had a silver T reg Datsun Violet 140J (?).

Would love an old Datsun or Nissan. 1st choice would be the earlier B210 120Y Sunny Coupé but I wouldn't mind a late Bluebird. :D

Posted

Very cool! Those 5-speed boxes are quite sought after and worth several hundred quid on their own!

Top buy 8)

I can't remember the last time I saw a Sunny that shape never mind a coop

V nice! It's such a shame this absolutely top class era of motoring has now passed, never to return...

im trying to save it............ piece by piece lol

That looks really great. I see it's suffered a giffer spec paint job in several places, which adds to it's gen-uine old lady owner credentials.

Nice car. Needs little. Well done -excellent spot

I dont think ive ever heard of a Jap car with a dogleg box. Does look great in the flesh though, even with the paint mismatch (done by a Ford main dealer, presumably in the dark)

I thought it was this one at first......... :?

Cracking looking car with the Brown factor, I've promised myself a RWD Datsun one day, but that won't be any time soon I'm told.

oooh another one......... Mines Younger bro (thats a facelift one)

Yes apparently the early manual ones had a Dog Leg box in them as they were used for racing!! How cool (From WikiRobbie LOL)

Posted

That's very pretty, like the styling. And like those wheels too, be a shame to remove 'em. Dog leg box sounds fun.

Lovely little classic. The good thing about 1970s/early 80s Japanese cars is that, as long as they don't suffer from terminal rot, they are no less reliable or more high-maintenance than almost-modern European stuff.

Surely they are not that un-reliable???

Surely the 160J - SSS was a modern day classic, I used to think that it was spectacularly rapid!

I remember being taken for a ride in such a fellow when I was a lad & spluffed into the glove box every time chap slipped into second.

I was only there because his daughter, although attractive in her own right, used to look so much better with my cock in her mouth.

Well I took it for a late night spin........ and came across more retros.............

And the next day the mods started!! Ive been playing with my Wheels ;D

First I tried my 14x9 Enkei's................

Unfortunately although they look right on the car......... I can even get half a turn on the stering wheel before they catch everything!!!! The arches just arnt as big as my corolla!!

SO I tried my 14x7 Watanabes...............

Next is to lower it ;D

Oh and heres a better shot of the interior............

GR8 4 EXPORT!!

Excellent find, the pre-facelift B310s are a lot nicer looking. Should be a nice drive with the 1400 A-series and 5-speed. Dogleg box was fitted to SSS Violets too.

I recommend getting in touch with Ratdat as he's bound to have some panels and a load of other bits for these.

I like the black Watanabes best. The ones in the first pics are Pardat wheels, often fitted to F10 Cherries.

Excellent!

The dogleg shift 5-speed ‘box was fitted to the 160J SSS as mentioned plus 180B SSS and the same pattern was also found in the Cherry coupe’s 5-speed ‘box even though that was FWD.

Datsun UK dropped it and went back to a 4-speed ‘box for a while on the Sunny, but the facelift model was eventually available with a conventional shift 5-speed as an option.

I can remember a few from back in the day, when I’m back home I should be able to say exactly how many were sold here new. I suspect the typical ownership profile was of ‘a certain age’.

More useful Info, cheers.

ide love to know how many are left and that "How Many Left" website seems inaccurate for the 140Y and doesnt define the Coupe version.
