What car names should they bring back

Recommended Posts

There have been some great car names from the past, and some of the newer ones seem rather dull. Who wants a 'Auris' when they used to have a Corolla.

They should bring back the Ford Capri, as long as it is attached to an affordable smallish, lightweight, petrol only, RWD Coupé with a propensity for going sideways.

All the good old fashioned British names from the past...

Westminster

Cambridge

Oxford

Dorset

Devon

Traveller

..trouble is, whilst these names evoke nostalgia from a great past, when applied to modern ,characterless crap it just wouldn't sound right.

Just look at the new mingin' Countryman!

Exactly! The reason VW could reintroduce the Scirocco is because it always was a FWD coupe based on the Golf.

At least they didn't nail a Capri badge to the God awful Probe.

... or the Mondeo Coupé that was the Cougar.

I like a lot of Renault names. Caravelle, Dauphine, Alpine, Fuego, even Safrane and Laguna are things you encounter in nature as opposed to a random medley of words. Espace is also a winner, as it's the whole raison d'etre of the vehicle!

The Koreans also used to come up with some decent names like Grandeur, Sonata and Pride (alright, that one was a bit ambitious!). Now they've become more "European" and their names are either pointless (Hyundai eye dirty) or completely stupid (Kia Venga, which is Spanish for "come on, Sir").

Triumph, Dolomite etc and those old Renner names /wot e sez\ like Dauphine.

One of the best has to be Interceptor (as that cock on the BBC stated)

Skoda, Estelle.

Simca, Aronde

Jeez there are loads,

gotta say i'm not fond of Sonata though, sounds like snotter to me

Names always work far better than numbers or letters. The Hyundai "i" naming system pssies me off, as it's trying to cash in on the iPod craze.

Also, what happens to base, L, GL, GLS etc trim levels?

Probably not true, but I was once told that the Vauxhall Nova was originally going to be the Opel Nova in Europe, until it was pointed out that, in Spanish, "no va" loosely translates to "won't go".

Deluxe, Super and HL are what we really want!

Ford still have Ghia I suppose, but it's no Vanden Plas...

Numbers are alright if used logically and for a long period of time, as with Peugeot and, more recently, BMW.

Quite possibly true (the meaning certainly is), but the difference is that I seem to remember having read that the Venga name was specifically chosen to attack the Spanish market with! *facepalm*

They phased it out a year or two ago! It's now something totally stupid like TITANIUM (all capitals).

BMW's used to make sense but now their numbers have little relation to the cylinder capacity

Ah aye, I forgot that. When did they start fucking it up?

Possibly as far back as the mid 90's ? the 316 which was a 1.8 maybe?

Edit: Wasn't the E30 316 a 1.8?

Depends. I much prefer numbeed Renaults than with names but liked Citroens when they had names.

I think it was about when they put the same engine in the 316d, the 318d and the 320d. However that wasn't quite confusing enough, so they took another engine and put it in the 325d, the 330d and the 335d, and they were happy.

But, past a point, the numbers stopped making sense. The 19 coming out after the 20, the 25 replacing the 30, the 5 becoming a 'Super'cinq?

Contrast that with the orderliness of the Peugeot system.

I'd like to see 'Escort' come back, of course...

I'm not a fan of names when it comes to model designations either. I too want to see the return of Base, L, LX, GLX, Si, Ghia, Ghia X e.t.c... At least you knew where you stood. You had variety where today there doesn't seem to be as many variations of a partiocular model as there used to be (barring the Porsche 911, of course...). Today, all you see are posh names which could very well be just basic models, or basic models with a few cheapo extras thrown in.

One that makes me laugh is the Corsa 'Active', available with the 1.0 12v. It certainly isn't 'active' with that under the bonnet, I assure you...

Indeed. I don't understand the number designations these days. Doesn't the current 320d use a 1.8 or something? I'm lost with them now, to be honest :? . A 316 should be a 1.6, a 318 a 1.8 e.t.c...

I think that, as the base spec is pretty comprehensive nowadays, the difference between trim levels has more to do with styling/suspension settings etc.

For example, a certain model offers as standard electric everything, climate, aux-in stereo, 429743297 airbags, shite nav, and what have you. You then get to choose between the 1.4 turbocharged 3-cylinder diesel COFFIN DODGER spec with black mirrors and skinny tyres, the 1.4 turbocharged 3-cylinder diesel WEALTHY CHAV spec with fake air vents, 19" alloys, and suspension lowered to 3mm from the ground and the 1.4 turbocharged 3-cylinder diesel URBAN PIMP spec with faux leather and a slightly uprated stereo. Some trim levels will have the odd additional feature, but this can also be applicable to the cheapest version. Then you get an a-la-carte menu of extra bits and pieces that nobody ever needs (like parking sensors on a car with a reversing camera).

Irrespective of what you choose, you end up with a hateful shitbox. :P

The Scirocco name lives again, but I think Corrado was a nice name as well.

I think it was the BMW 3 Series E46 model type where the engine sizes and badging got confusing. The 316 became '1895' cc and the 318 '1995' and the 323 was actually a 2.5 - god knows why they chose to mess about and confuse people with it !

I'd love if Renault brought back the letters for spec ie TL, TS, GTL, GTS, TX,GTX etc etc.,,,,Even the numbers --12TS,,, 8)

The screwed up the BMW numbering system years ago.

The 745i E23 was the first I can remember being a 3.2 Turbo (later 3.4 turbo) in Europe and a non-turbo M635 CSi lump in South Africa.

The 525e being the first proper cock up in the UK I can think of.

For no reason whatsoever other than I didn't know these existed until recently, have a pic of this.

Do I spy a Ju-52 behind that BMW? Had a e34 530i a few years back which was simply a 3.0i, why mess with what isn't broke?

I'm not sure bringing back names is a good thing usually they're rubbish and nothing like their originals. Though there are some "successes" such as the MINI (not really a revival though). Others though like the Beetle which were (are?) just dressed up Golfs if I remember correctly.

Stutz Bearcat

Sounds fantastic!

You wouldn't want to race one in case it pounced. You wouldn't want to see the residuals either, once you've found out it was build as a re-clad, hot(ish) Daewoo Chevrolet.

i would like to see the names "avenger" "hunter" and "rapier".... brought back into use

hey, I thought this was about model names as opposed to those of manufacturers!

In that case, I nominate hispano-suiza!
