Well after the last time i lost money saveing a car from the crusher i swore i wouldnt do it again

So after a phone call from our chimney sweep lady explaining she has had it with the cav and it will be scraped i ended up buying the car for £150 scrap value over the phone not always a good move i know

Its a late car on an N reg 1.8i in burgandy maroon colour and has tax and test to the end of august, the bodywork is very good but the seats are well how can i say this without sounding cheeky bloody stinking as she used it for work

I will give the old gall a look over the morn and take some pics for your veiwing pleasure.

The 1.8i interiors were never too nice, you might be best leaving the crap on it or getting seat covers! Piece of the proverbial to change the seats though if they are totally disgusting, though for the asking price it seems a no-brainer.

Scooters, believe it or not, there's an actual Yugo / Fiat / Lada garage near me, do you want me to get the number for you?

As Scoots is in much more dire need than I, can I be considered for second choice on it please? Didn't think there'd be much shoutage on this following Bol's hellish cocking about with that gorgeous auto when I was penniless

*Bol's old auto is very much alive and well I can assure you.

Yep, I've been watching the updates... I'm still kicking myself for not just fixing my SRi at the time it failed it's MOT, but I'll hopefully have a bit more cash heading my way shortly to put it back on the road again too.

Not as sooty as the image u had painted....

According to the good housekeeping forum....ahem.....

Baking soda or corn starch in a thick layer over all...leave for 24 hours then Hoover up...then carbon tetrachloride in copious amounts using a clean lint free cloth to sponge out what is left...on no account use water and make sure you don't breath in too much of the dry cleansing fluid!

Have you noticed any mechanical mayhem that will need urgent attention?

Also...do u know when in Aug the MOT is up?

Definitely take it just need to arrange collecting I guess

A tin of that mr muscle spray carpet foam also works wonders plus it's good fun scooshing it around.

That's very very useful to know...cheers

Believe it or not my local independant motor factor sourced a reconned starter motor for fifty quid... a good 20 cheaper than elsewhere

That looks mega value for money.

Mot 21st august 2011

I drove the old gal for the first time tonight as it was delivered for me.

clutch is very heavy is that the norm then? its a good few years since ive driven a cav

think it needs a good service to freshen her up a bit as the engine did not sound as sweet as memory suggests :D

The clutch shouldn't be too heavy at all. Even if the cable snaps you should be able to bang them through the gears easily enough.

Looks alright, does that. The cable's easily oiled, and it's easy to change if it's too far gone.

Ta..

From what I remember about cavs the clutch was always more heavy than on competitors esp fords or jap cars...I have spent a dismal number of hours over recent years in MK3 vectraz and insignias and both had quite heavy clutches....but then again not as heavy as on the 240 Volvo I've been scooping around in.

As to sweet running...probably just needs a 5000 rev 3rd gear blast up carter bar!....cleans the sinuses!

Exactly and third gear is ace on these. Even if worse case scenario the clutch needed changing at some point it's a piece of piss on these.

Are you sure this one won't have the later gearbox which makes the clutch change less easy?

Posted

If it's an 1800 it'll be the 8V which should mean the quick clutch change. I think (but stand to be corrected) it's only the Ecotec ones.

Hmmm, that's good to know...and the 1.8SE bottom end will take the 1.8E head and multipoint L-jet system too, which I just happen to have from my old mk2 :D:D:D:lol:

I won't be buying this, but it's just a thought for later!

I've heard that for the shitter - avoid the ecotech as the earlier engines are bullet proof wheras the brown rice chomping tree hugging unit can gripe and s tricky to fix....is that true Cav?
