I'd rather have the four-door version:

At least you didn't post an LT van. :)

Going from something sprightly like the Micra to a 924 will feel weird, they don't move off the line with much excitement, but they do get there.

Still more and more positive comments here!!

Ill check the insurance and take a look at the car and see from then.

Mind you, for useability, roadability and longevity I'd probably try to aim for a 944S. Grey, ideally. With Teledials.

I have a 944S with Teledials & I agree with most of the above but I have to point out that the S2 is probably a better bet

as mine is (comparatively) as flat as a fart until its got 4000 revs on it when all hell breaks loose.

I imagine though, that a 924 will corner with similar alacrity & in my opinion, that is where the fun is.

There's nowt wrong with the LT.

People say the 924 uses an LT van engine, but they it came from the 100 before. I think the LT used the engine after the 924.

If you want to be a real pedant, you could say that the Ford Capri has a van engine (Pinto and both V6s) or that TVRs use truck engines (Rover V8 - used in the military 101FC Land Rover and the Leyland Terrier in Oz).

I've got a B reg 924 at work that I bought as a project for the lads. Never in all my years have I hated a car so much.. so much so some of the lads have christened it Christine..injection system was all gummed up,electrics were a feckin nightmare, fuel pipes were rotten, and it needed welded at the front jacking points, which meant removing the wings. It still doesn't run right, apart from the odd day where its as good as gold, then goes back in the huff. When I did get it running right one of those days, I took it out for a rather illegal spin, and hated driving it. It got parked back up, and even the new lads ignore it. One even asked if it was a capri.

I'd rather have an LT van. Or a hernia.

Whoa there Moriarity, what's with all these negative waves at the LT then?

Show them love, gentlemen. They are beautiful things.

"Woof woof!" That's my other dog impression.

I love LT's. from fitting engines passed in through the passengers door with a forklift, to them sticking a leg out of bed at 50mph because some loon forgot they have a dog leg box. GR8 table between the seats for lunch too.

I'm not a fan of the 924, I'd much rather have a nice 3.0S Capri (which isn't gonna happen for 924 money), but if you can find a decent one and they appeal to you then buy one. It may turn out to be a car that you really bond with, or one that you wish you hadn't bothered with. That's the chance you take when you buy old stuff for fun.

I think my problem with them stems from going to look at them back in about 1992 and finding a lot of highly polished turds for silly money (10x the price of the 3.0S Capri I had at the time). A mate of mine, who's one of those blokes with money but without a clue mechanically, dragged me all over the country to check them out before he splurged a fortune on one so I drove about 20 of them in a week and none of them appealed to me at all. I like the seats in 'em, and the driving position is far better than in a 911, but the number of them out there that had badly bodged service histories, dodgy gear linkages, broken electric windows etc put me off them. Eventually I persuaded him that if he wanted a Porsche to buy a 911 - which he did, as you could get a nice SC for similar money to a properly good 924 at the time. That doesn't count in this case...

Still, there are others in here who like 'em, so there's bugger all to say that you won't, and if you get a half decent 924 it will be a better drive than a Micra. From my experience of Micras, it's unlikely to be much worse on fuel than the Nissan if the Porsche is driven with a bit of restraint.

944s, whilst suffering from the same things with regard to dodgy service histories, window motors, transaxle / linkage issues, do drive well and tend to go a lot better. Can you not stretch to a nice 944 instead?

If we're going down the van engined coupe route, I'd have another Isuzu Piazza Turbo. Although that may be a minority choice.

yes yes i know its got a god aweful exhaust on it but everything else seems to be there. I havent had a look inside yet or driven it as my mate was out. It does have a cool checked interior tho with a few rips expected!!

That one looks a lot better than the example you posted up at the top of the thread! I would check the insurance before getting it though (and a test drive might not go amiss, as well)

I think it's missing a spoiler, or maybe it didn't come with one, it looks quite nice without it. Interior will have your eyes spinning like a fruit machine after a while! Overall, it looks really nice, that colour is lovely.

Early 924's had a spoiler as an option.

& judging by the seats, that is an early one.

It's got to be better than a Micra - what are you still waiting for?

Posted

You must buy it, if only for the "pascha" interior :D

I've got a good spoiler if you do decide you have to have one. Real pain in the arse to fit though- lots of tiny bolts, which need tiny holes drilled. Or bodge it with tigerseal.

Well i decided not to get the Porsche. It needed a few bits doing and I didnt actually fit in it properly and my legs were wedged under the steering wheel which isnt adjustable lol

Im still consitering a change to something under a 2.0 and retro for under £600

Any Ideas????
