RWUK's Roadside Rammle: Cadillac STS in the wild

This week I ar been mostly at the Glastonbury Festival of Performing Arts.

There is usually a bountiful selection of old shite in circulation, and this year was no exception. I make no apologies whatsoever for the almost total lack of photographic prowess here, the combination of my "disposable" Samsung fail-cam and a staggering intake of alcohol put paid to any David Baileyness.

Starting with the car park, where this was fifty feet from where I parked.

gc1.jpg

I took one shot, hoping to catch it on my return to the car in a few hours, but it had vanished into thin air. This led my girlfriend to wonder if it had actually been an apparition all along, or had simply rusted away in the morning downpour. Onwards;

gc2.jpg

Acclaim sadly not much longer for this world; the rear wing had taken a bash so much so that the bootlid doesn't quite shut properly. I hope it's being driven by some 17 year old hippy chick.

gc3.jpg

Rover BRM, included here for reasons of celebration rather than shite,

gc4.jpg

This was awesome; the brown lacework sills on this Trafic had been patched up on both sides by the application of cut-down garage doors. Top work waste-not-want-not fella.

gc5.jpg

Couple of TKs about, this, a 4x4 active as a skip-carrier and an ex military AWD with a field command unit on the back. Neither me or they were in the right place at the right time for photos to happen, though.

gc6.jpg

Citroen H's were everywhere, all doling out grossly their overpriced wares to drug addled folk uninterested in such tribulations, there were at least four knocking about in the parts of the festival that I visited.

gc7.jpg

Morris J, in service as a motorhome and benefitting from UPVC double glazing.

gc8.jpg

Ford A-Series, appropriately employed as a mobile blacksmith.

205 lurking in the shadows; a lot of folk in the Green Futures fields tended to drive old, well cared for stuff.

gc9.jpg

Late V12 XJS, posed 10 feet off the deck in company with a '73 MGB GT on Rostyles that I failed to capture. Both a bit past it.

gc10.jpg

This thing kept moving about, this was the only chance I got to capture it. Tax Disc valid until next feb.

gc11.jpg

This Capri, parked nose-to-the-ground, had been completely covered with shards of mirror in an art-car stylee. Wore one 7 Spoke RS wheel and the rest were steels. No way to identify what it was, but I'm reckoning a GL from the non-sports seats.

gc12.jpg

That's all from this year, but I'm certain I've got more kerwality shite from Glastonbury's past. I'll root around and see what else there is.

Glasto-shite. Fabulous. I've been twice but even though I'm a complete car nut, I seemed to forget that entirely for the duration. I'm sure it was down to some chemical inbalance...

This was my 9th, and I've never managed to get myself into enough of a stupor to forget about my car-leanings. Wrong priorities, I guess.

Fantastic work Earl!!! I have never considered the shite acccumulations that may occur at such an event.

That Renner trafic is the stuff of legend with its garage door repairs. 198/10 WILL GO FAR

Nice pics! Glastonbury looks like hell on earth to me, but would be worth it for a look at that Mirror Capri. It is magnificent.

Just some more "gems" for your perusal, from previous Glastonburies.

gcb3.jpg

Starting with the straight forward luridly painted FX4, not so many of these lately but used to be in abundance at Glazza. These were photo'd in '05.

gcb4.jpg

Not sure what was going on with the white FX4. Nice Cargo, though.

gcb5.jpg

Bit more in the spirit of the forum. JKSmobile.

gcb6.jpg

Was being driven around the site a fair bit in '01. Doubt it's still around, especially looking like this.

gcb1.jpg

"Customised" proper Rangie, but hang on a second....

gcb2.jpg

Oh deary me. One for couriers, perhaps?

gcb7.jpg

No idea what this is, unless it's one of those "Landmaster" contraptions. Nevertheless, looked a bit shabby even in 2001.

gcb8.jpg

Same year and a bit of genuine Transit County 4x4 action.

Gotta love those proportions. I'd hit one of these, hard.

gcb9.jpg

And as darkness fell, the Glastonbury SPG heavies rolled out in quite the hardest looking tranny I ever did see. Matt black Mk2 County 4x4 for the win.

gctrans.jpg

Again, terrible photos but I was having far too much phun to worry about that kind of trivia.

That's either an ARO from Romania or a PORTARO (the Portuguese version).

However, both of those have a thicker bonnet than this one.

Its also got Land Rover mirrors and a Solihull numberplate.

Splendid, I Like the town and countrys on the FX4, mad bodyshop man Bob Rouse (who at the end of my road lived in a dishevelled shed builders were allways circling) had a set on a bronze Mercury Montego 2 door. But I digress; can anyone remember what the Electricity board was that used light green? About 15 years ago I had an exploding Colway moment in the outside lane of the M11 in an ex-board Maestro that colour.

Posted

Southern Electricity. A "mate" of mine has a preserved 1 ton Land Rover in that colour.

Hmm. I thought ARO when I first saw it, but it seems far bigger than those were.

This was what I was thinking about:-

Has the same bonnet shutline and everything...

EDIT Aha. Gotta be. Imagine this with a peculiar DIY construction on the back

Flushing out some old scruttle from the phone dredged up these few smashers.

grot1.jpg

This guy is a winner. TR7 in what appears to be Champagne beige, as seen on my old Acclaim.

grot2.jpg

This guy, on the other hand, is just nuts. Found this in Witham High Street, then a few minutes later being driven onto the forecourt of a car accessory place. Maybe he's just feeding his addiction.

grot3.jpg

This guy has a valuable car which isn't at all shite. Noice though, so I enpicturated it.

grot4.jpg

Spotted this abortion from a mile away. Was planning to send it to BarryBoys to win untold plaudits for presenting the most innefectually barried Fester in exsistence. But I was massively short of arsed.

grot5.jpg

Shit, isn't it?

grot6.jpg

I couldn't resist snapping it lest it have been some kind of ghostly apparition or a figment of my imagination.

Anyway. This weekend I have been at Rendlesham Forest, sleeping in a polyester bungalow and watching Theatre In The Forest. It was excellent. Also excellent was this;

grot7.jpg

This chap is a total hero. Not only does he own a 1981 CI Fairholme (I think) in Mystery Machine green, but he lets his wife tow it with a Multipla, while he drives behind in an Alfa GT with a bike rack.

We actually had a small shite assemblage of our own, My Girlfriends 'rents were towing their Swift Challenger with their Mk2 Laguna, her Uncle had his '91 JDM IMPORT YO Pajero, and I was there in the Rover. Here they all are. I was eating a Mint Feast Ice cream while taking the photo.

Just the words would have made me chuckle, but combined with the photos I'm doing the full LOL thing. Which is what I needed on this wet monday morning. Cheers rwuk!

I past that R21T a coupe of years ago on the A12!

1988 Renault 21 Turbo by Trigger's Retro Road Tests!, on Flickr

I've seen that very car on numerous occasions in and around Colchester. We also have a black Quadra and a red one locally. I have sen the Quadra and one other running in convoy; so perhaps there's a gathering of enthusiasts somewhere locally.

Posted

That R21 reminds me - i need to glue some upvc soffits to my parents' bungalow and make it look absolutely awful.

Posted

I wondered where that TR7 had gone, it used to live near me in Penge, SE London. Colour is indeed Champagne beige, one of BLs finest shades IMO. I love the fact someone actually ordered a sports car in beige back in 1981!

Posted

This Allegro VDP was actually travelling at the speed of light.

29102010527.jpg

It disappeared away from me, TRON style, on the A12, Colchester bound.

08062011556.jpg

This made me long to go on a school trip to somewhere, Woodbridge Tide Mill, perhaps. This thing was lovely, with Viewmaster proudly signwritten above the front wheel. I recently lost out on a Plaxton clock on eBay. Christ knows what I'd have done with it. Could have looked ace in the Rover.

Utterly, totally mint Dutch registered 944S, spotted in my favourite Garden Centre. I have absolutely no idea what's gone wrong with me.

Sherpa Coupe in everybodys favourite colour.

DSC_0292.jpg

I believe it was that blurry from the factory.

P38 with off-road rubber, looking hard as nails and a bit scrummy.

DSC_0294.jpg

Very early E39 with yellowing, steamed up headlights in the traditional, and declining, fashion. Manual, too.

DSC_0295.jpg

Some mid-90s JDM stuff was spectacularly shite, wasn't it?

DSC_0297.jpg

DSC_0298.jpg

Unbelievable.

This thing was comically knackered, and contained an entire family, including a daughter with quite the largest earrings I have ever seen. She could have hula'd with them.

RNLI Lifeboat Tug. This is a phenomenal vehicle, those windows are designed to be able to be locked down completely watertight, so that if it gets stuck in the sand it can spend the night underwater and be collected at the next low tide. I'd quite like one but can't really justify that AND the Rover.

This was on our campsite in Looe. Landcruiser pickup, slightly similar to the one in Midnight Oil's Beds Are Burning video. (1989).

DSC_0341.jpg

Blurry 216. I bet you're impressed that I can make pictures taken with a Nikon D50 with an 18-200mm VRII lens look like they came from a Polaroid that's been sitting in a pond.

DSC_0520.jpg

Finally, at Geevor Tin Mine we read about the lives of the stout folk who used to work there. One of them bought this with his paycheck in 1978.

I raised a pint of Skinners Betty Scoggs in his honour.

Judging by her movement I'd say your shutter speed was too low, trying bring the ISOs up or opening the aperture a bit wider.

I'm guessing you were fully manual?

Yup. Zixatly what went wrong. I'd been taking pretty pictures of the harbour at dusk, and took this impromptu shot while walking back to the car. Should have shutter-prioritied it.

Honda S-MX, loved ours, shame it got written off by a blind Renault driver, mind you would rather be seen driving the Honda than sat on the hard shoulder in a P38 waiting for the AA..............

Ah yes, this takes me back. My mate used to have an identical Rover 200 in 216GSi form (G???GOM) but I think his was Red all over rather than 2-tone, though it had the same rear spoiler and alloys. I'd always wanted one and began scouring the autotrader pages even before I passed my test.

Maybe one day eh? :|

MOAR scruttle.

In use as a boat crane at Pinn Mill; it's enormous and wonderful and I don't know what it is. Scammel?

Garden ornament Landie, ONE LIFE StickItInTheCornerOfTheGardenAndForgetAboutIT!

29082011825.jpg

Metrocab clearly doesn't go sarf of the river this time of night, guv, or ever, for that matter. Dissolving near Pinn Mill.

29082011813.jpg

Were it not for needing a new placcie rear bumper, like, immediately, this would be mintier than death by toothpaste. It looked quite jaunty on its Corsa n/s f wheel. Seen in the Millpool car park, West Looe.

19082011763.jpg

19082011764.jpg

This was being driven hestitantly. It spent long enough sitting in front of me waiting for no traffic to pass that I could probably have painted a picture of it, let alone take a photo. I'd forgotten how timelessly elegant these were.

02092011864.jpg

You know I mentioned that I liked Praries? Lo and behold:

Suzuki Baleno. Not seen one of these for a long while, then inevitably see one on its way to fragging.

11082011754.jpg

2.8i Capri was veeeery clean and satisfyingly rorty.

31082011844.jpg

I would quite like one of these for the work commute.

08092011876.jpg

Expect this Granny hearse won't leave this forecourt intact. GR43 for listening to Motorhead in 1988 in. At a garage that Trig knows well.

A cheery wink form Moggy; may rekwire sum TLC for MOT like.

08092011874.jpg

Nearby potentially lovely 1.9 GTi sits forlorn under a tree, flat tyre, some trim missing, but lovely.

So much so that another photo felt appropriate.

And finally, Polo with added downforce for happy fun drifting times. Front-Wheel-Drive? Really? Oh.

There's a few familiar spots there, The one eyed Moggy has been in that garden at least 20 years, It used to share the driveway with a green Mk2 Escort van but that disappeared about 7 years ago, I remeber walking past it a lot when i used to go to Copford school up the road from there.

And funny enough i also saw that Polo on the A12 back in March as well.
