That Herald shot is brilliant Peter. Remote flash or just a lamp inside the car?

Thanks. It's just an inspection lamp hanging from the rain gutter by the driver's quarterlight.

Fantastic. I love it when expensive kit HASN'T been used to get a good shot.

+11 on the Herald shot. It's just perfect: plenty of fascinating things going on around it but nothing to distract us from the main object. I also love the black and white car park shot, it looks perfectly 'period' ('cept for the cars of course) and I reckon if the motors were replaced with fifties/sixties chod it would look like a 'genuine' forty odd year old shot.

Tartan: the tips on the Mini picture should be very handy. Is it easy to create that effect using Paint or Gimp do you know? I can get them black and white but not sure if the tip about using rubbing out would work?

Posted

You'll be able to do it in Gimp I suspect Billy. In effect, what he's saying is that you add another layer of the same picture, desaturate the colour to make it black and white, then erase parts of that layer to allow the colour to come through. I'm going to give it a go right now...

Posted

Thanks. Sorry to be the class dimwit (as per) but when you say add another layer of the same picture how would you go about that please?

Posted

I had to find out myself! Here's the image anyway.

Open the image in Gimp, then go to the Layer menu and select "New from visible." You won't see a change, but there should now be a new layer in place. Go to Colours, Hue and Saturation and shove the Saturation right down to get black and white. Now you should be able to use the Eraser to wipe out bits of that new layer, to bring through the colour from beneath. Note that Gimp/Photoshop allow a LOT of Undos, so don't worry if it doesn't work at first attempt.

With help from the instructions in this thread Ive just had a bash at GIMP, I suppose practice makes perfect but I have to say I'm impressed (even if it does look a little like Ive photoshop'd escRot into the middle of a different pic.)

That's come out really well! :D

For low light or night work, tripod = your bestest friend. You can get 'em from 7dayshop for about £16 or summat daft. Then use either a remote release (my Pentax-compatible one was £3 off eBay) or the timer if you can't, so you're not taking a photo as you're pressing down on the camera - you'll get shake. You can then just leave the shutter open as long as you want, for example the last photo below was a 6 second exposure.

Cheers Ian, can't wait to get home and give it a go!

Dave that Escort picture is bloody brilliant mate. In fact I'm going to stare at it for ages now just because I can.

The Herald picture is one of my favouritest ever. It should go in the next AS calendar.

I think my photographic style is pretty basic, I'm a bit stupid when it comes to technology. Some better? efforts from my last camera...

Definate contender Jon, no doubting it.

Now, without wishing to run before I can walk (as far as this thread goes) how about at some point we have a 'picture of the month competition just for fun? There's some top notch SRS contenders in this thread already.

Here's a few of mine from the past few years, either taken with a Lumix compact or the Nikon D40 I bought a couple of years back.

Oops! Marshalling on stage rallies gives you some great opportunities to get closer to the action, even though you're really not supposed to be taking photos. Unfortunately I wasn't blessed with much of a conscience....

5193090682_e26279e268_z.jpg

No special techniques or fancy equipment used here. Just a cheap DSLR and VERY steady panning skills.

Last Spring I got to spend a day on a proper photoshoot with a couple of pro photographers, and learned more than I ever have before or since. I was dead chuffed with this, but you should have seen the ones they took.

Hand-held night rally shot. I tweaked this using Nikon's own in-camera D-lighting, but apart from that it's how it came out of the camera.

Most of mine are properly bad. I really do need to go and fiddle with the camera for a while see if I can improve matters. Think I'll download that GIMP thing and have a play. Not much good if I don't take a half decent shot in the first place though.

I'll bear that in mind DW!

I'm still trying to learn how to take nice photos with my Canon EOS 450D, Most of mine are just point and shot, Recently I've started to run them through Photoshop Elements, I just click auto fix or crop them, Seems to give good results.

I've always wondered how you do that layering thing with B&W photos, I might give it a go in a sec.

These are my favorite photos...

Both of these were taken back at winter at night with my shutter speed on slow and no flash and using a tripod., I think it gives good results.

I've never tried taking a photo with a subject so close and whilst focusing on the view, seems quite effective.

Good stuff Trig. Views don't seem to be in focus, which really adds to the shots. Love the snowy driveway shot. Really captures that winter feeling.

Cheers for the encouragment chaps. I'll be playing around with GIMP next time a get an hour or two. It was suprisingly easy once you work out where the buttons are and what they do.

Some great shots turning up in this thread though...

I love Pillocks long exposure fairground ride and Trig, your snow shots look good, but then I think snow generally gives an oddly warm feel to pics.

Some more of mine now.

Im really quite proud of the composure of some of these. Again, I took plenty more that didn't make the grade and got deleted when I did the uploading.

I love the double reflection on this, I can't remember being aware of it when taking the shot though.

DSCF0332.jpg

and the reflection here too, although, a straighter car would've worked better

DSCF0334.jpg

Like DW's mates pic shows, rain does give a good effect when upclose.

I love the depth of these next couple of images

And using the sun to your advantage to pick up details can be fun.

Bryns HotRod Landy is quite photogenic (but then he does have an eye for details).

I might see if I can photoshop the telegraph pole and cables out and crop the diner out of the left hand side.

DSCF0921.jpg

Marks Merc is just gorgeous anyway, but the bright sun drenched paintwork with looming stormy clouds as a background is a pleasant juxtaposition. Not the best bit of framing/composure, mind...

Spent the last hour or so creating a picture using Gimp. Quite happy with the result but when I go to save it then go back to it to Photobucket it's nowhere to be found on my computer.

It seems to be trying to save as an XCF file (for whatever reason) could that be the problem that I can't find it or am I missing something here?

Meanwhile here's the best of todays photographs. Not 100% happy but better than I'd thought in other respects too. Took about 30 odd and these are probably the better of them.

I can't give any advice as I'm stictly 'point and shoot', but I do enjoy messing around with different angles ect and I like to try to get some 'interesting' shots.

Billy, XCF is GIMP's own internal file format. That's why Photoshop can't read it.

Untitled.jpg

When clicking on 'Save As', you need to double click on the format menu at the bottom third of the screen (circled) and that will allow you to select and save as a JPEG file.
