AS Communal "Worth A Punt?" Thread

Just to bring a bit of calm to these hallowed pages I thought I'd start a thread that we can all use to gauge opinion on prospective shite purchases.

To start the ball rolling here's mine.

£495 with 11 months ticket, leather and new roof. '96 on a N plate.

Snog, marry or avoid? :?

If it's auto I'd have a crack at it, why not? Should be fun for the length of the ticket, after that you can do what you like!

Snog, Have a quick fumble behind the bush then dump once she starts buying cushions and talking of commitment.

It's a lot of car for the money but I'd be worried that it was too cheap, I still would though.

Posted

Snog.

Meaning buy it, run around enjoying the 3 hours of sunshine we'll get but with 11 months ticket, flog it next May at the first sign of sunshine and make BIG MONEY.

(or, not much loss)

Does anyone think this is worth a punt at £375.

I promised myself another BM after my old 318 got written of after two months of ownership.

Don't need a 2.5 obviously, but I do little mileage so engine size not really a factor!

It has had a recent cambelt change and service but

hesitates when pulling away when cold (common problem I think)

Not sure is this is an issue!

Oh yes! I'd get the stickers off it as soon as possible, though...

Thats what I was worried someone would say :)

Anything road legal and in decent order is worth a punt at not much more than scrap value.

I'd be careful with it. The hesitation when cold is often the first sign of HGF or a cracked head on those.

Then again, it's cheap.

As a now rare early example of the E34 5-Series, it's got to be worth saving :)

Ive been offered a F reg escort estate 1.6 4 door for £75. No tax or test and only 2 or 3 miles away... not sure whether to take a look and see if its worth an MOT test or send it over the bridge. I keep thinking of excuses and reasons not to though. I would need to borrow a trailer or book an mot and insure it for 24 hours just to get it home or to the scrapyard. I dont need another car but that isnt an excuse!

Posted

Got to be worth a look at £75 I would have thought, thats probably less than scrap value anyway.

I would imagine the estates are quite rare now, I haven't seen one for along time!

What engine is it?

Edit: Doh just seen (1.6) - will teach me too read posts properly

Well I suppose the old adage that "if something seems too good to be true then it probably is" probably applies here.

Marry the Saab, lot of car for the money and probably a good laugh on the one sunny day of the year.

Old Five series do nowt for me, bit bland and seem (almost) devoid of any appeal. For that kind of money though it should be ok to run round until something major goes wrong or you get bored of it. So I'll say snog.

That Scimitar is rather pretty. First time I've seen proper pics of it.

The gauges under-reading is quite probably just a dodgy earth (quelle surprise). I'd try running a known good earth to the case of one of the clocks and see if they read properly - they dial earths will (should) all be linked so just adding a decent one might cure the lot.

Posted

Sorry you missed out Pete. I did a thread about it somewhere back in the mists of time (a couple of months ago) and I think that was one of the shots. Can't remember.

Wacky dials certainly is a dodgy earth. Just haven't found out which dodgy earth yet. Discovered today that even Lotus Elises do it, so it must be a sign of a good car.

Slightly concerned at the total lack of interest in it. Not sure if it's the pricing or the location that's putting folks off. Autoshite discount certainly applies...

I'm concerned that I've not had any UK interest whatsoever in the XJR. Beginning to think that I may as well just take it to Czech or Germany and flog it for double my UK asking price.

I know fuel is expensive at the moment, but the thing does 24 mpg on a run. WTF do people want from a 325 bhp car for £2k?

I haven't had a single enquiry about the MR2. Not even a scammer

Would you be able to sell anything RHD in CZ? I can see an opportunity there...

Nope. There's a big issue with RHD there. Czech gubbermint doesn't like people importing cars from anywhere, but RHD is a proper no-no. It can be done (as until a certain Mr A. Hitler arrived, the Czechs drove on the correct, left hand side of the road), so there is an exemption for registration, but one of their rules (and you have to sign a legally binding thing) is that you have to have owned the car in its original country and cannot sell the car on in CZ.

Czech beaurocracy is one reason why I'm going to trailer the Escort back from there. Cheaper than trying to temporarily register it in CZ, and easier than getting the thing through the TÜV and re-registration hurdles in Germany.

That sounds like it's lifted straight from a book entitled "Case Studies of National Laws which don't conform to EU Legislation" or some such. Having said that, I wouldn't fancy going through the Eurocourts procedure to get it sorted!

Posted

Thing is, one of the reasons I like Czech is that they regularly ignore the EU in lots of ways. No smoking ban there, for example.

They're in the EU because it's easier for them to sell the things they make and given the location they'd be mad not to be in it. Doesn't mean they're gonna take any notice of EU rules. They do the environmental bits, but that's mainly because the Czechs tend to care about it.

Problem there is the older generation keep voting for the friggin' Communists so they've ended up with a coalition between the hard left and hard right. Local government there is mental, but other than taxes and things like registering cars nobody seems to bother with the government much at all. Which is nice.

I'm seriously considering bringing a load of old tat back here, and have my beady eyes on a gorgeous T603, but at the moment the Escort is my priority.

The temptation to fill the Uk with old foreign chod is huge...

I'm really not sure about this, why convert to carbs? At least it's local.

I'm bloody sure I recognise that house (it's in Bromborough I think) and the seller has the same surname as the person I suspect too. If you are interested in it drop me a pm and I'll send you his number.

If it is him he has (or had very recently) a Chevette four door saloon.

That will have dropped about 20 bhp and about 3 mpg by going to that carb from fuel injection. He's probably had issues with the injection and thrown a carb on to ruin it. Bloody shame as K-Jet isn't exactly complicated so there can't have been much wrong with it.

I see that's already getting a few Autoshiters excited - and rightly so! 2-litre surely makes it perfect.
