Omegas etc- a miserable story that ends miserably

So, to sum up, you've bought an LPG powered, Swedish badged, Dutch built Mitsubishi Carisma for over the odds, paid extra to get the cambelt done, and schlepped in your Honda Accord.

Congratulations.

Now, when are you gonna buy a Luxobarge?

That sums it up nicely (though the Accord would 've been staying if I could get a garage for shite-fixing practice) :x

However, I will be in France towards the end of next week...

This is a dissapointing conclusion to this massive thread.......

Infact this is more dissapointing than having a shag and not blowing your load....

New username for you;

Good luck with your new purchase though :)

Is this new? A car too shite for autoshite?

(You should have bought the Jag FTW!)

I predicted this conclusion, I should have put a bid down the bookies on it.

I really don't know what you're scared of. I've run an old Mercedes for the last 9 months and 32,000 miles with no tears or major expense. In fact, it's cost me less all year than you'll lose in depreciation in the next month.

Save some money and buy something like this.

Why is everyone turning into a massive wanker over this thread? The guy has a pretty limited brief on what he can actually buy, and just because he doesn't fly to Uganda and drive back in a 404 pick-up he's some sort of pariah?

I'm sure everyone else here is a model of thrusting 'can-do' excellence but last time I checked being indecisive wasn't a crime.

Good work L_R_U for taking it all on the chin. Best of British, an all that

+1. It's a story, and one that I for one can relate to. Mind you, I'm not that picky, and usually end up with a right old pile of shit...!

What do they pay an hour at mcodnalds then???

Time to pack up this engineering lark and go tossing burgers

I think they make you work 65hrs a week...

I agree with Barrett, give the guy a fuggin break i say, hes out there weighing up his shite options and now has bought some. It wouldnt be 15 pages of drivel we werent all chipping in with unamusing snide remarks every time he does owt.

Posted

Hey L_B_U, fair play to you for buying something LPG'd. The 480 would have driven you mental anyway, look what it did to me!*

*Or it might have been the 15 pages of snide comments that did it, I dunno.

Those S60's aren't a bad looking motor, Much better then a bloody 480, No offence Wat but you would really needed to get your head tested if you had gone for it, Was it the burgundy one with holes in the dash from the DVD player?.

As for the Accord I'd punt it in, It only cost you £350 to start off with so £200 isn't bad, You could always stick it on here for sale first for £250-£300 say but is it worth it?.

Bloody part-timers, they want to try driving a truck!

LPG (or GPL as the Frogs label it) is all over the place out there, just make sure you get the adaptor before you run outta gas.

I need to get one as well, looks like the Heep may be on a mission to Czech sooner than planned...

Take a camera, if you spot anything interesting we'll want to see it.

Don't see anything wrong with the final outcome, after all it ticks the main box for L O'B and a factory fit LPG kit should be relatively trouble-free. I and I suspect quite a few others would have gone for that Audi A8 given the choice, but there's no need to slag someone else off if his tastes are different from yours or circumstamces prevent them from living up to their name

On a more cheerful note, now that the voters of Sheffield have had the good sense to kick out Nick Clegg's eco-looney mates, it should be worth trying to get the new lot to see sense. Local councils' job is to empty the dustbins and run the schools, not to dictate to folk what sort of car they should own; perhaps this is a good opportunity to remind them of that. :)

I think you should stick some wing mirrors off a charisma on, coupled with some wheel trimz off a Oldsmobile to give it a Luxury touch. Finally buy a 65m length of stick on chrome off ebay, and no more nails some pram Iorns on the C-pillar.

Then I will start a rumour Princess Ann used to drive one round Stockholm, and everyones a winnar.

One thing before it ends in tears see if it has/needs/due a lubing a "flashlube" thingy, and see when the two LPG filters (in tank outlet, and near vapouriser) were last changed - I hacksawed one in half and was suprised at the detrius in there.

And here I was joking about the "Mitsubishi" Charisma.

The Volvo is possibly even more ironic than the "Japanese" Carisma.

Swedish car built in the Netherlands with Japanese running gear (and parts that fit a Proton Persona) with quite possibly a French sourced engine to power it.

It's almost but not quite as nuts as the idea of an Alfa Arna or Cherry Europe GTI

A chap at work in NL (couple of years back) had one of these Volvos (with LPG) and I was quite surprised how cheap they felt as well - and I was driving my Proton Persona at the time - not realising we shared the same floorpan or such like either

Why doesn't somebody think of building a car with a German body-shell and interior using Japanese drive-trains and electrics? It would make a lot more sense than any of the above :D

Posted

Yes, it looks like the LPG system hasn't been serviced for a while, however it runs a-ok. I did tell him that I expect him to at least have the filters changed before handing it over to me.

As I said before, it's not something I want to be driving for any length of time. It's well-assembled, but probably the cheapest-looking leather interior I've ever seen- a contemporary Sonata feels about 4932497% more luxurious. The main reason I bought it is that, when the "right" car appears or if I happen to move (which might be necessary for work reasons a few months down the line), it should be reasonably easy to sell without incurring a massive loss (believe it or not, 2001 and later S40s seem to still be going for over a grand, even without the LPG) and, with any luck, I wouldn't have spent anything on it until then.

I'll try flogging the Accord here- not for the money, but because it can help a shitist get mobile for not much...

Sorry to drag this up again but is that true? Even at 65 hours a week that works out at £7.30 an hour.

Trigger’s right – we’ve all been there and bought something out of sheer frustration after looking at 5 other cars you thought should be good.

Look on the bright side, sometimes a car you don’t like much can turn out difficult to kill.

Posted

my method of car buying (in fact complete life cycle)

1. wife decides she prefers my car

2. get fed up with wife complaining how crap her car is

3. get idea of something I might like

4. get obsessive about something I might like

5. assemble money

6. buy first example of thing I'm obsessing about

7. spend years fixing problems because I should have looked more carefully

8. spend years modding because it's not quite as good as I thought

9. return to step 1

Heh.

My car buying cycle is more like this.

1. Scan ebay / autotrader / mates garages.

2. Find something that appeals.

3. Buy it.

4. Fix it.

5. Use it.

6. Get bored of it.

7. Flog it to buy something else that appeals.

8. Back to stage one.

I may be in a minority here, but I actually quite like the S/V40 and would entertain owning one, even though it can be in no way be described as a 'proper' Volvo or an exciting car.

I don't mind them either, they seem quite hardy and I never think of them as just a Swede-Dutch Carisma, Volvo went to quite a lot of effort to make the floorpan (is that all they share?) their own.

Posted

Pete's theory is bang on.

I'd just change number two to: 'Find something that appeals and that the missus doesn't like'

Posted

she doesn't like either of my current cars so maybe I have achieved that

the only issue is that instead of pressure to steal it can just convert into pressure to get rid of

also I now have a compressor and airgun so if I can tart up my wifes car I might delay her part of the loop as well

Mine:

1. become bored of current car.

2a. make up catastrophic fault which is DEFINIELY about to befall current car, and thus it must be sold before sunset.

2b. wait til tax is nearly out and decide can't be arsed taxing it, and thus must be sold before sunset.

3. get idea of something I might like

4. get obsessive about something I might like

5. assemble £200

6. buy first example of thing I'm obsessing about

7. spend 45mins fixing problems because I should have looked more carefully

8. spend 10mins modding because it's not quite as good as I thought

9. Give up and return to 2a or...

10. return to step 1
