Shite meet

Those fancying this trip may also like to know there's a Bike show / Autojumble at Copdock on Oct 2nd.

I suggest all those coming from Norwich, Lowestoft etc by way of the A14 to do Copdock in the morning and the Riviera Crawl in the afternoon.

I'll enjoy seeing the old bikes about on the road, but I'd rather get down to Essex as early as I can as I'm sure the children will want to get out on the beach.

Looking forward to it! I need some time off from work/doing stuff on the house.

Has anyone decided on a specific meeting point yet? It's hard to tell from looking at a map where would be a good spot

Posted

I'll meet everybody at Jaywick itself.

Providing I can find my gas mask and get my tetanus jabs in time.

I'm not sure if i can make this now, I'm going out for some drinks on the Saturday night so I might not be fit enough for it, Also, to throw a spanner in the works, I have a bit of a issue with going around Jaywick, It's great on your own but knowing the area, 10-15 blokes marching around with camera which cause upset.

I've spoke to a few people i know from the area who have all said the same, you will get lynched by the locals who won't take lightly to you walking around their homes, taking photos of their properties, They are a different breed to most people, imagine 28 days later crossed with Chatsworth estate in Shameless, but in Essex.

To be truthful with you, I have to agree. Bear in mind, too, that Wolesely, Humber, Singer avenue etc. aren't through roads, either. Dead ends, no passing places, to be totally honest parking up and visiting the beach / soaking up the "atmos" is fair enough, but wandering around photographing the locals' shit is akin to poking a lion with a stick.

I was going to suggest much the same thing nearer the time, that any photos are taken with a degree of caution. However, if nothing else I have to get down to Jaywick to see if the old Datsun signage on a garage is still there and get an appropriate photo with the Laurel parked outside.

It amuses me that Google Streetview went up and down virtually every street.

From Jaywick I foresee just a leisurely drive up the coast, with stops as desired in suitably scenic locations at Clacton, Frinton etc.

I think whether we come now depends whether I can get the indicators working on the Allegro in time... I don't really fancy driving all that way without them TBH.

Little reminder on this, as it's only a few days away. Be great if the weather stays like it is right now, especially for those who are journeying from further afield (please don't expect too much if you are, or any degree of organisation).

RWUK, I must remember to hook out a few brochures for you as promised. Be a good excuse to go and have a rummage in the shed.

Thousands of BMW drivers have drivers hundreds of thousands of miles...

 And also Audi & VW Golf drivers!

What sort of time are people generally thinking of meeting up?

If we're anywhere near Jaywick, I advise before sunset, or we won't be able to see where we're going for the steam billowing from the cauldrons.

Spottedlaurel; Cheers mate! I'll get you an ice cream or sommat!

I’m looking to be down there by 10.30-11am, so leaving mine 9-9.30am. If you want to hook up somewhere around Diss and drive down in convoy let me know, or if you’re a bit later and want to hook up wherever we are give me a ring – you’ve still got my mobile number?

May well have a pass to come on Sunday now, I've got further with my digging a hole then filling it in again job than expected.:D

So, it's Jaywick seafront at 10.30? Anywhere in particular? Or have I got that bit RONG?

Posted

Well, I have been in conference with Mr Laurel, and we agree that we will meet:--

Here. X marks the spot. On the corner of Jaywick Lane and Crossways there is a garage with hideously overpriced fuel, and an attached Bargain Booze outlet for stocking up on 8 Ace. There are about 5 parking spaces outside, too. Round the corner is the garage workshop Spottedlaurel was speaking of, which always has a goodly selection of outright mediocrity outside.

10:30 AM, Sunday 2nd. Be there or be an irregular polygon.

Jaywick. Bleedin'eck, why was I thinking that the meet was somewhere slightly to the East of Peterborough?

As Jaywick is out of the question for a daytrip and I'm rather skinned at the moment, unfortunately I can't make it.

.... slightly to the East of Peterborough

It is! Depends how you define "slightly". Shame, we can always use better representation from the valuless mass-market luxobarge sector.

Weather's looking distinctly good, look forward to seeing people there.

Apparently they've been opening things up at Clacton that were closed at the end of summer, it may be busy so I'll certainly be making the effort to get down there in good time.

Posted

I drove to Clacton tonight, the traffic was a nightmare coming out of clacton, about 6 miles of queues so leave early!

Nice to meet up with you guys and gals, heading home to the sound of roast/smoke alarms now (if the A12 wasn't stationary....) I think the shitters are meeting up at the naze ay 4 should anyone fancy a cruise.

BTW - Jaywick is as you imagine... one fella wandering along carrying a full exhaust over his shoulder... shirtless pensioners rollerblading along the front Fletch styleee!

Yep, was good to see everyone, and a pleasant day to spend an Indian summer Sunday. Jaywick really is quite something...

Had quite a pleasant drive home - at Oldford's suggestion I took the back roads to Manningtree and then the A137 up to Ipswich, which cut out the horrible roadworks on the A12 and was also a much more enjoyable route to drive, and then I had some fun on the A14 trying to hold off a 59-plate Civic Type R and then racing motorbikes on the dual carriageway stretch of the A140 near Diss (where I discovered that the 30-100 time of the Rover is identical to that of a KTM Duke, but above 100 the Rover starts to pull away, much to the KTM rider's chagrin). I love that car more and more each time I drive it. And the silly stereo was put to good use along Clacton sea front as well - took me back to my late teens when I used to do similar things. :D

Very enjoyable, well done to all those who turned up :D Difficult to get photos, but lots of good spots and some really quite odd sights/sounds.

It was a an enjoyable and pleasant day, though the weather wasn't up to the usual Autoshite meet low standard. Jaywick lived up to my expectation, some good road names, new trenches dug around the vacant land and a discarded leaking car battery on the footpath. The car park pay and display machine even mugged Andrew e for a £, though I suspect that he got more than that back when he won that bet for wearing that shirt. :D

The drive upto the Naze was a bit of a roller coaster ride and the drive home? I ocassionally caught sight of the Rover in front and thought I'd never catch him, then coming off the roundabout at Manningtree I saw my chance, overtook the Megane in front, then the Rover and a few other cars, intoxicated with the new found power of my CVH, he was just an image in my rear view mirror.

Or the truth be told they were all queued up to go under the single lane bridge with the traffic priority against them, I just went over the bridge as the barriers were up.

Wot? No Autoshite-Essex-Contingent-Group-Photo?

Yep. A ridiculous oversight; and they looked terrific congregated up on the Naze.

Mr Laurel was spraying his cameranozzle around liberally, so whether he got anything....

EDIT:- Beat me to it, Nigel!

(incidentally, really enjoying the brochures and I would now quite like an '83 Dodge 50).

I've had three Dodge 50s - brilliant old trucks.

I'm enjoying my E3-related literature (also courtesy of SL) - including a wonderfully politically incorrect advert written from the car's viewpoint, trying to persuade women to get their husbands to buy one - ending with the brilliant line "What if he does go for me? It's better than having him fall for another woman." Brilliant.
