"old" ABI insurance group list & shite suggestions

Right. This XR2 I've got is just too small for stay-at-home-dad style family duties, so I need to replace it.

Simples, thinks I, it's on a single car classic policy from FJ, so it'll probably be similar conditions to the multi-car I had last year. I'll just check, though, but I reckon a Celica or Mk2 Golf GTi shoudn't be a problem. Plenty on the 'bay at reasonable money.

Well, maybe it is. This policy won't cover anything above group 10 on the old (20 group) ABI ratings. Problem is, I can't find a database of the old groupings online, to let me filter my watch list, and everything I've enquired about up to now has been over group 10. I'm not getting into taking out another policy because of the expense, so my questions are.....

1. Does anyone have/know of a database, list, whatever of old ABI groups, from the 20 group system.

2. Any suggestions for a classic policy friendly, sub group 10, rear seatbelt equipped and fairly large booted XR2 replacement.

I would ask for sensible suggestions only, but no-one would take any notice..... :D

Not much help from me, but is/wasn't an xr2 higher than 10? I thought "hot hatches" were like 12-15, golf GTi and Scirocco were grp 15.

as has been said before, I HAT the ABI and their mysterious ways of working. I would've thought that your best bet would be a light 5-door hatch with a biggish engine but without chavtastic branding....In fact, if I were you, I would've already called to enquire about this little beauty:

That's a pisser, I used to have a little pink ringbound book of insurance groupings from the 20 group days, listed all sorts back to the days of MG Magnettes. I think I threw it away in one of my futile attempts to avoid a future appearance on Hoarders.

See? Everything comes in useful eventually. It's not hoarding if it's useful.

How do they group cars now then? I thought the 20 group system was the new way, there were only about 9 groups when I started driving.

Since January 2010 they've had 50 groups. They claim the extra 30 are necessary because there are so many niche models nowaday with wildly varying repair costs, not like when I was a lad when it was all fields.

If you use this below it shows the 20 and 50 system.

Ace. Ta very much. It seems the XR2 is group 10, so they won't go higher. XR3i is too high as well, alas.

ZX is too new, unfortunately, but very nice, all the same.

Than ks for your input, guys, I'm off to scour the interweb.

Maestro/Montego VDP? Should come with at least a 1.6, probably 2.0 in the Monty which ought to be sprightly enough. It'll also come very cheap, and you can't deny the comfort. Being the "luxury" models should keep the grouping down a bit too.

Assuming that your insurers are going to be cocks and not accept a couple of quid extra to let you have a better motor:

Fiat Tipo Turbo Diesel, group 10

Ford Escort or Capri 1600cc group 9

Peugeot 309 GR 1600cc group 7

Volkswagen Golf Driver 1600cc group 9

and because its Autoshite Talbot Solara group 7

I'm sure an AX GT is group9, but that doesn't really help with the size issue

Nissan Bluebird 2.0 litre hatchback. Cheap to insure and possibly the ULTIMATE WINNAR GR6 4 FAMILY DRAGGIN'.

ZX should be borderline on a Footman James policy, no? 15 year limit, that one pictured is a 1995/1996 car.

Sierra 1600 Estate (post 86 for the seatbelts) and you can moonlight as a window cleaner too!

My uncle Jimmy (He's Irish) had a Mk1 Sierra Estate for years that he used for his painting job, it was always covered in white emulsion over the rear bumper.

HORSEY HORSELESS.

I wondered who'd be the first

Pillock, FJ are a bit odd on their ages, something like that Citroen would porobably need to be 20 years. All Peugeots (inc GTis) were when I asked on the multi car, although Golf GTis were OK at 15, and Celicas can go on at 10. Not that that matters now.......

Some good suggestions, BTW, still mulling things over.

FJ are a pain in the arse when it comes to ages of vehicles. After being pretty certain that the Saab would be ok at 20 years old, they've decided that now the cut-off is 25 years old, so I'm not insured with them but Peter D James instead. Pretty miffed about that, especially as they seem to insure any Jag as long as it's 15 years old from what I've heard, and MGs as young as 5!

FJ fluctuate on their ages of classic cars quite a bit, my Saab 900 is insured a classic with them (21yrs old) Alfa's they said needed to be 20yrs old minimum, but when I called them last week they would put a 19yr old 155 on a classic policy ... I do think things change with them quite frequently and its not just 20yrs or make specific but model as well. They don't seem to bother about groups for classics though, which is a plus as most of mine were 15-20.

I went through all this with the multi car policy. All I ever had to worry about was age of car, even if it did seem to be inconsistent. For example, I was told, Audis were 15 years, but Audi Quattros of any description could go on at 5 years old!

As far as groupings go, the last car I added to the multi car was a BMW 635 (group 20  ) and they charged the standard £35. Now on a single car, I'm getting all this crap. Really can't find anything I'd be happy with that's sub group 10. Fancied a 1st Gen Prelude, but even they're group 11. Think I'll just struggle on with the Fez.

Stupid thing is, FJ were happy insuring the BX, which is the same age as the Saab. They wouldn't cover the Scimitar on the same policy - fair enough, it's actually got some of that power stuff that I usually don't have. Re-quote was to up the group to a Scimitar-friendly level. I get the Saab and suddenly it's too young. Frustrating as I really need business cover. Might try again come renewal time.

Yes, I had a Mk3 Golf GTi on there at 15 years old, but when I wanted a Corrado (Mk3 Golf Coupe) they said it had to be 20 years.

Wouldn't they cover the Saab as a modern, or was that too costly? Used to have Mrs S's Alfa on the multi-car along with my chod.

I think they're getting wise to people insuring daily driver fodder on classic policies. Bugger.

Told them the XR2 was my daily, they weren't bothered. Fat lot of good it's done me now!

FJ were quite happy to insure my Mk3 Golf on classic (the same one that sporty-shite insured with them, so they could hardly refuse!) even when I told them I had no other car, it'd live on the road, and I'd be taking it to work every day.

They insured the E36 on the same conditions, no problems at all. It's not super-duper cheap, the E36 renewal was £315, but it's cheaper than real insurance by a huge margin.
