I HAS NEW SPECIAL EDITION SHITE

Recommended Posts

It's been a while since my last post here, had a birthday, a few hellish weeks and my knee's playing up again. Deep joy and merryment, as they say.

Anyway... with the Volvo still resolutely refusing to run for any longer than it wants to, the Cavalier still off the road and the Mondeo being boringly efficient, I did what any shiteist would do and went on ebay. The result is... this.

My neighbours must hate me... by cms206, on Flickr

It's a '91 J-reg Proton 1.5GL 'Lynx' 12v saloon in some fetching shades of silver and overspray, 45k from new, lots of history and a full set of dealer stickers and rego plates. It does need a bloody good scrub and a bit of tidying amongst other odds and sods, but I'm already settling in to the brown tweed interior and haphazard instrument layout. Other than it being a bastardised 1.5GL I know not a lot else about these special editions as I bought it purely on the strength that I wanted it and hadn't seen a Lynx for... err... years.

I shall sit back again and await lots of abuse...

Posted

Oooh, nice. I'm probably insane, but I like these with all the bodykit nonsense.

Posted

Abuse? No way! That's ace and the bodykit suits it well, very 'period' though maybe those body coloured wheels need spraying a different colour.

Posted

Yeah, definately; it looked tidier a couple of years back, but I've got an impending timing belt change before I start doing that as the current one was fitted at 27k in 2000 or so. My main appearance issue with it is the fact the fella I bought it off sprayed the black trim silver and didn't do a great job of masking it... about eighteen months ago it looked absolutely superb, but it's nothing that can't be reversed.

certainly approve of that purchase. Must be very rare now. Look forward to some more pictures when scrubbed up :D not that it looks like it needs much from the picture.

Great buy. 8)

Some chap I worked with 10 odd years ago had one just like it. I guess it was a stop gap to a Mitsubishi Evo.

i had a blue 1.5SE Aerodeck many many years ago on a K plate used to give XR3i's a run for there money

great purchase of a somewhat lost car in this modern world 8)

:D First Class, no abuse from this callsign.

I wonder if it came with a flat cap and a copy of the Record, as part of the special edition? If so, these need to be replaced immediately!

Good buy tho', they're quite nice cars in an odd way.

Flatcap is on order in the same fetching shades of coffee & brown tweed as the interior...

... one thing the previous owner did leave in it, aside from dog hair and fag ash, is an Eagles cassette. Considering he drove it like tomorrow wasn't coming, I found it quite apt the first song to play when I turned on the Blaupunkt radio was Take it Easy...

Excellent purchase there cms, I quite like the bodykit, I'm guessing its a dealer option? As long as it its OE its fine by me.

Have a couple of Proton Saga Lynx limo pics on me:

A magnificent example of the breed. My best mate's Nan used to have a Lynx, identical to this. I remember staying at her place in Gloucester in '93. The mild steel woodscrews that were holdong the front fogs in place had already rusted out and the fogs were all wobbly, there was exposed wiring hanging down into the drivers footwell and sharp interior edges everywhere. Awesome car!

WOW!!!! The Lynx effect!

Posted

A family friend had a Lynx in the early 1990s, which he won in a competition not long after he bought a new Fiesta 1.3L :)

Great purchase - hot stuff!

I think I spotted another Proton special edition a few years back but cant remember the name, I seem to think it was sometihng like 'Park Lane'. Any idea? May well have been a Lynx but didnt think it was..

I was horrified to see my dad pull up in one of these when he was purchasing a second hand car in 2001. It was handed down to me when I was completely skint and had just been dumped, so skint in fact I had to smoke my supply of French ciggies, just had a lot of bad times in that car, non of my mates would go in it either - they used to call me 'Proton Knob', a joke referring to the (unconfirmed) size of my genitalia and the fact I had a Proton. Looking back, it wasn't such a bad car.

It's nice to see one in silver, a nice change from the standard "Chocolate Lime boiled sweet" green:

Must be my taste in things, 'cos I'm the only one in our depot who'll eat chocolate limes. In fact, I'm the only person I know who likes them. And Protons...

Anyway, been buzzing about in it for a couple of days now and other than being a bit hesitant low down it's pretty nippy and more comfortable than I expected. It looks bloody horrendous too, but seems to be attracting attention - our Polish mechanic rather likes it, my traffic officer was all over it this morning and the boss's brother used to sell them.

Photos when it gets back, my mate has stolen it for the night as his Manta and Yugo are both dead.

I saw a white prefacelift J-reg Proton today and I certainly took note of it.

Good find, thumbs up from me!

So, yeah... more photos. Like a tit I took photos THEN cleaned the interior and it was dark when I finished, so more photos on that soon... anyway! Lots of stickers and odds and sods here, and in my infinite wisdom I forgot to take a photo of the back end. Durr.

wow! an unmolested Lynx - rare as a virgin in Kircaldy that one!!! shurely a keeper moneypenny?

Posted

That looks pretty mint!

Seeing all those sticers has reminded me that I have somewhere a large lapel badge that I got at the 1989 Scottish Motor show that simply says in huge lettering 'I LIKE PROTON CARS'.

Posted

Does it have power steering? I may be wrong but I thought all 1.5 Protons came with PAS?

Yes, it's the only concession it has to luxury, well that and a passenger side mirror. Keep fit windows, no height adjustment on the drivers seat, tilt sunroof only, no central locking...

... it's thoroughly miserable, but quite nice at the same time. Never driven anything so completely inoffensive before.

Didn't a Proton fan get all upset about one of these with a mildly smashed up front up for auction at Copart - how it was a one of a kind car? OMG MUST BE SAVED I WOULD DO IT MYSELF BUT MY CAT WONT LET ME ETC

It was deffo an early grey proton with a bodykit like that. Anyway at least there's one in good hands now :D .

Proton kind of lost their way after these, there were loads sold in the early 90s. Now I hardly ever see a newish one, the owners (if still alive) must have transferred to Kia.

I see the odd newish Savvy, Impian and Gen2 in my area (there's a Proton dealer near my local railway station), but not many compared to the amount of Sagas, Personas, Compacts, Wiras and Satrias I used to see knocking about. I see loads of Kias and Hyundais, though - the Proton dealer also sells the former, while the former Rover dealers sells the latter.

There's a Proton main dealer near here, so still see a few Impians, Gen2s (including a taxi) and Savvys about. Also quite a rare Persona Gen2 near here which I'll need to get a photo of, it must be guaranteed futureshite.
