My "new" Peugeot

Hello shiters,

A few of you will have seen in the News 24/7/365 thread that I've bought a Peugeot 205 on eBay to use as a commuting weapon. It's an 82-85 mile round trip every day dependent on if I'm giving someone a lift and it was getting a bit too much with the old Land Rover, not just in fuel but trying to keep it up together, it was suffering as I've got other stuff to do than spanner it every weekend and I need some money for my other (older and cooler) LR. Anyway, cutting to the chase...

First plan was just any old shitter that would do reasonable MPG, be kinda reliable (I don't mind tinkering and can do most stuff, just gets depressing if it's ALL THE TIME) and cheap. Then I rediscovered my love for 205s; a few years ago some friends had a few and I had a base-spec diesel as a work hack. Our holy grail was a STDT, basically a GTI shell with a brown interior and a turbo diesel engine, preferably in dark green. Anyway after a while everybody moved onto other things and the love went dormant until my rapid realisation that I needed to get real and get a decent(ish) motor!!

eBay beckoned and first spot was a grey D-Turbo which is basically a normal 205 with the chin spoiler and the turbo donk. It looked OK but went above my budget. Then a couple of weeks later, lo and behold, an STDT!! In green!!

Anyway I won it for £672 and today I picked it up. Sorry for the lack of photos but here's a few.

No-one was about to give me a lift all the way to Devon and a quick Google revealed that for £19 I could let the train take the strain!! Unfortunately the timings weren't the best and so it was that my lovely wife drove me the half-hour journey to Peterborough station this morning/last night...

And the first leg (P'boro to Letchworth) was on a rail-replacement bus, where I slept a bit. Spotted this LR and took a rubbish photo of it.

The train into Kings Cross and then the tube to Paddington was blissfully quiet, unlike the "express" train I boarded to Exeter... jam packed and to make matters worse I was surrounded by Spanish teenage boys who stank and snored. A lot. There was one girl but she was a monster and sat right behind me. Snoring.

Eventually I arrived at Exeter where the vendor met me, we went back to his house to do the paperwork, and I set off!

First stop was Strensham services on the M5 for a coffee, a wee and a quick checkover of my new ride.

The M5 seems endless but there was a highlight on the trip meter....!!

And eventually we made it back home to sunny Rutland.

I am proper chuffed with it so far, it needs a good clean up and a power steering pump (which was mentioned in the eGay listing), the tacho doesn't work and there's a couple of rot blibs on the sills to attend to before they get too grotty but otherwise it seems ok. It certainly goes well, the brakes are better than I was expecting and the gearbox is lovely - and it only used quarter of a tank of gazoil to get home. Yay

Excellent purchase there, was on the lookout for a decent STDT for ages but no good ones ever came up for sale. Yours looks like a real cracker, hope it serves you well.

That is spot on, I'd love one of those for a run about, My first work van was a D plate 205 XLD which was a nice thing to drive, i bet this is a lot nicer.

Straight into the commute today, it's totally GR8, I love it! Here it is with a friend at work.

Looks like a handy tool, and well done for the real-men's-hours trip to collect! :D May it serve you well.

That's exactly the sort of car I'd have as a daily driver if I wasn't so attached to TV2 :)

Are the 1.9 GTi wheels standard fit?

I think they're supposed to have the 14" alloys you more commonly see on 405s with the centre caps missing.

That looks like a perfect answer to all those "I want a cheap but fun small car for commuting" questions. Good buy!

WIN! That's brilliant, I haven't seen one of those for a long time. I think they were quite expensive in their day. Bet that goes well too.

I like this a lot - A++

I was looking at 205s on eBay a while back, and this makes me want to have another look :)

According to Autocar from 1993, £10,025. It goes really well especially when the turbo spools up :)

Awesome buy! Looks in great condition, those 1.9 GTi alloys set it off lovely.

Coincidentally 'EW' is a Peterborough reg, so it's come all the way back home :D AND...my next door but one neighbour has L81 TEW (405 'Style' estate...)

Indeed, I had a double-take when I clocked the MARSHALL OF PETERBOROUGH dealer plate on the back! The lad I bought it from had picked it up on the 'bay from a fella in Nottingham who had owned it for 7 years, I've been going through the box file it came with and there's history right back to 1996 and all the bumpf and booklets that came with it when new, I love that sort of thing.

Holy thread revival!!

This has now passed through two good friends of mine, has a 1.9 intercooled 306 donk in it and will be for sale in the new year, anyone fancy it? Will get details of MOT length etc and some fresh pics. A good offer above £350 would get it.

Ooh, I've always wanted an STDT as well .... Is the bigger engine any better/worse than the std one?

Posted

It goes much better - in fact with the fuel and boost turned up it flies. Just as good on diesel. It does have a few electrical issues but nothing serious, could do with better grippy tyres, an exhaust and there's a bit of grot in the floorpan. I've probably jumped the gun a little as I've just heard their octavia has shat itself so they are relying on it until the new year, I will get a full rundown on it's current condition though.

I'd definitely be interested Scruff (depending on space) and you're not too far away either, so I'll keep n eye on this thread.

Get it bought lad!
