A couple of early sierras marks this out at 82ish for me.

Even then Metro drivers couldn't park  dunno how that Granada driver/motorist :D is going to get in but I bet he leaves a stinking note on the saaaaaaaaab's windscreen. Makes me hunger for another mk2 Cav :|

What is the green car in front of the granny? and spot the FD 8)

I'd put that at 86 or so, due to the 216? rover, and an early 205 and Shogun

I thought it was acclaim but you are right! that might just be mrs bucket supervising her hapless husband loading the boot

More importantly no sign there of the masses buying a brand new car every three years!! Why do they do it now?

I'd say the main picture was taken in late summer/early autumn 1985 at the latest, largely owing to the lack of mark 4 Escorts, which were released in early 1986 and seemed to be everywhere by spring/summer of that year :)

Could only afford the GL spec sierra then

Before someone asks what a Barkas is doing there, the GDR didn't make Barkas camper vans. However they did sell some normal vans to a Dutch company who converted them to campers to sell in Holland.

Opel Commodore coupe or Manta notchback coupe??

Posted

I recognise that pic Trig - Some farmer in 1985 & his idea for a 'Car Supermarket'.

The idea'll never catch on...

A lot more variety in car colour back then as well

Posted

Yeah, lots of BEIGE.

Probably not a great idea to leave half of those models out in the rain though.

Yeah either a chrome bumper Manta B or Cav Coupe. Looks like a 910 Bluebird next car along ? Pretty rare back then to see a Jap motor ?

Looks like the flat front end of the Manta rather than the droopy Cav front. And weren't Jap cars massively popular from the 70s onwards? You'd have a much better chance of seeing a 910 in 1985 then you would now, that's for sure!

York 1985 is the description of it on flicker. Attempt has also been made on Flicker to identify everything in the car park.

For me the Adriatic Blue Fiorino in the foreground is just PURE SEX 8)

As well as the Barkas there are some other oddities such as the Taunus with the bonnet up, and a brand new Jeep Cherokee at the back. I assume that belonged to somebody over Harrogate way who worked at Menwith Hill...

Because I'm bored, I just totted up the cars I could identify in the first 8 rows of the pic quoted above.

45 from the UK

10 from Germany

4 Japanese

3 Swedish

2 Italian

2 French and

2 'other' (Barkas and Yugo)

Big Opel badge on boot lid, they stuck on ~1978 models onwards.

Had one of those Manta Coupes, 1979 with 1.9 CIH clunker. Second car ever, loved it.

Wow! Is that Ford's of Winsford? It looks extremely like it. I went there several times with my dad as a kid. He always had a fairly wide range of cars there including some fairly high end stuff which was always very cheap, but always had an absolutely poverty spec. I remember seeing a Mercedes 280SE there at about this time which had nothing on it at all - flat paint, plastic hub caps and cloth trim which looked like it was stolen from a deck chair. It was horrible. He had a W123 too; that didn't even have a rev counter. That Jag will be a 3.4 manual.

I went there with the old boy one time when he was making a valiant attempt to off load a Peugeot 505 family estate. The thing was vast, pale metallic green, upholstered with the spikiest prickliest green tweed and smelled vaguely of horse. The offer he was made wouldn't have covered the taxi fare home...

Parking skills haven't really improved in 25 years either

Hey Trigg, aren't a load of the cars in the 'Car Supermaket' photo ex-featured cars from What Car? magazine? The Cav at the bottom certainly looks like a press one with the tinplate Sercks and the beige Alfa and red 3 series also look farmiliar. Or maybe not.

The York photos are making just a tiny bit homesick, though anyone who's recently attempted to park at that car park (right next to Cliffords Tower) and then try to get out of their car will notice that they've made the lanes and the spaces smaller....

The Granada mark II drivers seem to be the biggest culprits of bad parking.
