Where to sell cars?

I'm just about to put up my wife Micra DCi up for sale to the general public to piss me about with but I was wondering what sale site people recommend?.

I'm planning to use the free sites like pistonheads (OMG WOT BHP IS YA MICRA DUDE ETC) and gumtree, but I'm torn between which paysite to use.

Option 1, Is Autotrader, As a rule i normally use autotrader, I've had good results from there site but the prices have now creeped up, It was £25 when i last used it, now it's £33 for 2 weeks web only which isn't cheap.

Option 2, Ebay, I think this can also work out expensive, I could try a classified advert, do these work?, a buy it now or best offer advert, or reserve auction starting with a 99p starting price but a reserve of around £3000 say (I've done this in the past and it can be very expensive).

What do you guys recommend from experance?, I want to spend as little as possible advertising it!

Is there a Micra forum (there's one for the CityRover so who knows)? Might be worth a search and try there.

Pistonheads may be a goer for someone looking for an economical commuter, otherwise I'd say try Gumtree as the third choice. I think Gumtree is still free but you can pay a nominal amount to keep the advert at/near the top of the listings which may be an option.

When I sold my wife's Fabia about two and a half years ago (the last time I sold a car as well!) I ended up going down the eBay route first (reserve price and a reasonable Buy It Now - "excellent" trade value per Glass's that you can get from the Vauxhall website) but didn't get many sniffs. Then switched to Gumtree - however you're only able to put 3 pictures on Gumtree (or were at the time). I got around this by telling interested parties that the eBay auction had much more detail and further photos, then pulled the auction once the thing had sold.

I didn't use Autotrader because of the fact that, as I'd sold two other cars on it (one wasn't even mine!) in the preceding 24 months, they wanted to charge me trader rates...

It was bloody hard work selling it though (a seven year old well-spec'd supermini in bloody good order and a huge FSH, just up on the miles as the only demerit); you'd think something like that would fly out of the classifieds. Good luck, you might need it!

Just tried that WBAC qoute, £1880 for a 04 plate Micra DCi with 80k and full History, No thanks. Oh and that's less a £49.99 transaction fee.

Ebay is expensive. As I've just discovered after selling the CX. Well, they can wait for their money. Especially as I don't actually have any just at the moment...

I think the Classified Ads are much better value and get you the same sort of visibility, plus people can't bid when they don't have any money.

My reaction would be to say Ebay but, having just looked, it's dearer than I remember.

It'll cost you between £28 and £43 plus £7.99 if you want to set a reserve. A classified ad seems better value at £14.99.

Ebay auctions are less hassle though in my (limited) experience.

AutoTrader still probably cheaper than eBaY by the time the latter have dry bummed you in charges/fvf etc.

The good things about Autotrader are that if the price is right it will sell, also the call to viewer ratio is pretty good and, as a rule, there are far more genuine people on there.

I think that's the route I'll go down, I'll give it a couple of days on gumtree and pistonheads and if i hear nothing I'll wack it on Autotrader ready for the weekend, I'll make sure my mobiles charged as it will be RINGIN OF DA HOOK BABY!...

make sure my mobiles charged as it will be RINGIN OF DA HOOK BABY!...

Caller: "Hello, is the micra still for sale?"

Trigger (Excited): "Yes, yes it is."

Caller: "Well, we can sell it for you and we have buyers waiting, we guarantee a sale within 1 month blah de blah de blah...."

Trigger (Downhearted): "Bumholes!"

I've been actively looking at Autotrader over the weekend for a possible new family car, has to be said for cars with a bit of value it's a much better site than eBay. Lots of search options without needing to register or anything. Most cars seem to be trade sales on there, if it wasn't any good presumably dealers wouldn't bother using it?

Buy a £15 mobile from a supermarket and use that instead of your own phone, it means that you can switch it off overnight/when you get a right twat repeatedly calling.

And you can launch the simcard into the river when you've sold the car :D

Last year I sold my Corsa on Auto Trader and it sold on the first call - literally. They said they'd buy it before they even saw it and drove from Bristol to here in Dudley on the same day and bought it!

I don't bother with autotrader, on account of buying stuff off there being a total arseache.

Pretty much every car I have ever come across on there is a total shitter.

9 times out of 10, blatantly clocked, blatantly a dealer trying to offload shit they can't get away with on a forecourt and in mechanically/bodily far below par condition that would cost them their ass if they were honest and provided the basic warranty they are obliged to.

Ergo, if all the good buyers have the same experience, they won't be looking there, so why bother.

That said, eBay seems to have died on it's arse. Got a car on there at the minute, at a pretty sensible price and not so much as a sniff.

Sounds really odd but we've had some good results using some thing called "netmums", a parents-network that Er Indoors uses... lots of car-dim housewive-types who go mad about airbags and have no idea about cambelts or service intervals... :|

I generally use ebay.Buy it now with best offer option and automatically decline offers below a certain amount.I list a mobile number to arrange viewings. Most people turn up to view and buy meaning I can cancel the listing and only incur the £8.00 listing fee.

Most of the cars I sold last year were below fifteen hundred quid and none were your average run of the mill motor (one or two made it into the ebay tat thread  ).A couple of friends with forecourts only use ebay classifieds and another only uses auto trader so for a newer car it's a tough call, both ebay and auto trader seem to work for car dealers.

Is that yellow Anglia Free Ads still about ? Maybe you could try Friday Free Ads.
