I used to spend hours looking through the trader....even used to take one on holiday with me, I think I have a photo of me reading one in Rhodes!

Mk1 Goof 2 door (for resale purposes 15 years later) and pre-facelift Mk2 Granny (for Jack Regan/George Cowley fantasies) plz. 8)

Great stuff!, I used to have a massive pile of autotraders from 1991-94 but dumped them all about 8 years ago, wish i hadn't now.

I love the Capri with the cherry bomb as a selling point!

I used to love AutoTrader when it was like that - with the ads in no sort of order before they started putting ads in alphabetical order.

It was like a voyage of discovery scanning the pages looking for hidden tat with ads seeming scattered about at randon within their section. Putting them in alphabetical order spoiled it a little for me.

Ah, the halcyon car buying days of the mid-1990s when a grand could bag you all manner of bread and butter 1980s cars in good order.

That 240 GL on the first page is pretty tasty :)

Shame about the cock up with the Avenger photo, would have been a Top Hat edition by the sounds of it. :( Check out the prices of the type 2 camper, XR2 and Escort underneath it too!! Can imagine a load of blinged up black Mitsubishi L200's with 'Essex plant hire' type signage racing down to the last two, owners armed with 'readies' if they were that sorta money nowadays.

Oh for the days of seeing a 3.0 Capri with a 3 figure price tag

I remember my dad advertising our top-spec Alpine in Auto Trader in 1986 when I was 6 years old. 8)

That was the days when a guy with a camera would turn up and take a snap of your car for the magazine. That's probably why the pictures are so consistant and not a side ways shot of the bottom half of the front of car like you get on ebay now.

Spoilt for choice as far as mark 2 Cavaliers are concerned. Brilliant!

...and you left the cheque and the ad copy in a plastic bag tucked in the exhaust. Been there, done that.... :D

Just rung up about that Lancia Delta Martini.....fuckin' things sold.....

Thanks for showing those, it's bought back some memories of buying cars when I was a teenager. Just think I would of laughed at the thought of owning an Allegro then!!

I found some old Autotraders the other day from around 1997 in a cupboard at home, and I have a suspicion that I may have some from 1988 in the loft, will have to have a look at the weekend!!

Excellent scans! So many lovely MK3 Escorts and MK1 Orions.

Also the Renault 12 on the first page was a good age for that type of car in 1996. I only recall ever seeing one 12 in 1996, on myfirst trip to the Lake District

I hope this is the start of a new trend on A-S.

I have a 1989 copy of the Dundee Auto Mart paper somewhere, and a Canadian Auto Trader from the same year.

Loads of Minis for under a bag. Obviously the Cooper replica/wanker phase hadn't kicked off then. Loving the Fiesta Mark 2 on p2 that's been undersealed up to the doorhandles.

My 1996 Autotrader buys:

1977 Alfasud 1300Ti £50, welded the floor back in and put a low mileage 1300 Arna motor in. LJO155S

1983 A plate Sierra in HAB, £350, utterly rotten arches and had a 2.0 engine in - would overheat at anything over 60 because the rad fins were missing on the lower 6 inches. Actually I bought this in 1995....

1985 Arna 1.2SL, B100EGH. A low mileage honey bought for £275. Took insane amounts of abuse over 10'000 miles, swapped the Alfa badges for Nissan ones, 'lost' the V5 and put it thru Aylsebury Car Auctions. It made a ton and a half.

1982 Y reg 525i E28. Bought it for £350 with damaged osf wing. Bought a new one from EuroCarFarts for £30, had it painted for £30 and fitted it out in the street. That turd polished up well, 190k and a growly 1st gear but a lovely thing.
