Cavcraft Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 Allegro is nice but the Cambridge is top draw. Got anymore pictures to share/
Vinylseats Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 When I was 18 twelve years ago I felt like the only 18-year-old with an Allegro! Regrettably, I sold it for a Polo as I wanted to look a bit more cool. But now there's people much younger buying them! The Vanden Plas looks lovely.
trigger Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 Hi Dan and welcome to the site, Good to see you have made it over to here from Facebook!. I like your Allegro, I'm sure I've seen it before somewhere though?.
Angrydicky Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 Yes I'm sure you've spotted it at one of the many shows you've been to Trigger! I remember the local (DOO) reg.
BMC Dan Posted December 29, 2010 Author Posted December 29, 2010 Yeah it's done a few shows around North Essex as it's currently at my parent's holiday bungalow in St Oysth. It's been a Clacton car all it's life and was supplied by Bryans Leyland garage in Old road. One of it's previous owners was a retired RAF squadron leader who had the car from 1980 until he packed up driving in 1995.
trigger Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Your right, I saw it back in July at the Walton Car show, i was their with my BMW 1602 at the time. 1978 Vandan Plas 1500 by Trigger's Retro Road Tests!, on Flickr 1978 Vandan Plas 1500 by Trigger's Retro Road Tests!, on Flickr
Vinylseats Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Lovely, lovely car. But is that a Ferrari badge on the back?! There's a few too many stickers and things added on which need removing if they haven't been already, including the reflectors on the back. Is it manual or automatic?

Baderbox I'm afraid Keeping all the tat on there for now as it's part of the cars history, having all been applied during the Squadron leader's ownership, it was nicknamed the 'grand prix car' by him hence the prancing horse logo. As a bonus here's some old scans from that period. I've had a fair few questions at shows about the gold side stripe too, as far as I know it's an Allegro 3 one applied upside down?
Vinylseats Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Oh my goodness! And oh my goodness. I've always wanted an auto Allegro of any kind - I don't care how slow it is. *drool*
maxpower Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 welcome dan... love the cambridge... can remember them as a nipper in the 60's when cars had an i dentity of there own
garycox Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 That Allegro looks great! I'd love that. What's the thing on the driver's door?
Vinylseats Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 What's the thing on the driver's door? Looks like the original owner went a bit over the top with reflectors!
Louise2cv Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I love those pics!# Looks like a much loved little beasty.
Mash Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 Are you me, but 15 or more years ago? Welcome to AS Dan. The Allegro is great - Tara Green is such a lovely colour.
Andrew353w Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Welcome on board! I'm also in Hertfordshire, so you are not alone.... LOVE that Austin Cambridge, particularly the near-side spot lamp; I trust it works!
boobydoo Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 I remember my Dad buying a Tara Green Marina 1.8 Super, brand new in September 1978..the reg no was FHW476T If I recall...I really liked the colour and also the fact that it was the first car we owned that had: 1) a radio in it!! 2) cloth seats! When he brought it home I excitedly turned the radio on and 'Summernight City' by ABBA was playing. I thought this was absolute luxury!! How come you always remember irrelevant crap like that but not really important stuff.....err,like paying your credit card bill in December...ooops.
AnthonyG Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 Hello Dan Love the Cambridge, I'm not really fussed about VDP Allegros but that was before I twigged it was the legendary one owned by the Squadron Leader that Trig snapped. Welcome to the madhouse, BTW.
Vin Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 Hi Dan and welcome to the site, Good to see you have made it over to here from Facebook!. I like your Allegro, I'm sure I've seen it before somewhere though?. The VDP is very nice in that colour of green. I think the VDP has also been owned by a poster on here as I remember them posting pictures of it a couple of years ago. The Essex reg, ferrari badge and Squadron leader owner all ring a bell. Are there also additional switches on the dashboard such as doorbells or similar for additional equipment??? Lovely EDIT; tried to search for the pics I was thinking of and found that the poster was 'Daniel H'. Here is the link that I remember the dashboard switches from. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1335
BMC Dan Posted January 4, 2011 Author Posted January 4, 2011 Yup that was my account from agesssssss ago, surprised it still exists as I don't think it's been used for at least two years.
keef Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 I think the VDP has also been owned by a poster on here as I remember them posting pictures of it a couple of years ago. Ditto, but don't remember the Cambridge; that looks tasty! Anyway; welcome Dan. Here's our Maxi in the same lovely green. :-
Alexg Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 Wow - that VDP Allegro is everything I could ever want. If you do decide to sell it please please please PM me Thanks
Lord Sterling Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 That is simply stunning Dan. I really, really WANT an Allegro VDP right now.
AXrescuer Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Welcome young man. I too reside in Hertfordshire. Nice Allegro.
boobydoo Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Hertfordshire for me aswell. We should arrange our own exclusive meet!
BMC Dan Posted January 5, 2011 Author Posted January 5, 2011 Hertfordshire for me aswell. We should arrange our own exclusive meet! How about Classics on the common at Harpeneden? Considering taking the Micra as it's within the age criteria (over 20 years old)
Rod/b Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 I was Herts until October. Now Bucks, until next Friday, and then it's Qatar.
