CJ's Odds'n'Ends 2 - Here Be Photos...

In honour of NU 12 REG day, lets have some rancid old shite. Firstly, I've meant to get around to a full-scale photo-ninja-shite-hunt round Dundee for a while. An hour's work in a relatively small area gleaned these beauties...

My other half, Kay, piqued my interest in this low rent industrial area, with this tempting snap...

2012-02-13133323.jpg

...and the garage this is in, has the scarlet FX4 tucked away down a side alley. The City Of Discovery did present me this scabby nugget, too...

IMAG0713.jpg

...zoom in, go on. Tell me how much of the sill is patch. 70%? 80%? Bonus Russell's ERF shite for those of us as likes that kind of thing too. The Tesco at Riverside's a positive shite magnet for some reason.

Elsewhere, there's...

IMAG0744.jpg

IMAG0770.jpg

IMAG0748.jpg

IMAG0726.jpg

...so it must be silly season again. Fire up the telephoto lens, Eugene; we's got us some hot pappin' on.

IMAG0769.jpg

Welcome to Fife. The Health And Safety At Work Act (1974) hasn't filtered thro' yet, co's it's still 1955.

Or...welcome to Fife. It's a drizzly Thursday lunchtime, and you're having a wedding. How classy do you need to be?

IMAG0767.jpg

A)Not Very. B)Not at all. C)What's the problem with a stretch GMC truck? D)No way. It hasn't got a gun rack, or Rangers logo'd numberplates.

Could be worse...could be one of these wangers;

IMAG0893.jpg

EDIT 2/04/12 - Replaced shit Escalade pic, with much better one.

IMAG0566.jpg

I couldn't manage a 12 plate; but I did find this.

IMAG0766.jpg

DFSK Loadhopper. It's a Dong Feng, so it must be insta-shite, right? Despite its' miserable half-ton payload, it'll lug the canvases, sculptures and installations of Kay's that even the Volvo barge baulks at. 8 bags? Hmmm...maybe. I'm guessing it's Suzuki based. Kay reckons it needs a BMW badge, in there above the grille. That would be funny as fuck.

Oh, and cheers for the pic of the Hillman, Doug. Looks like an honest old thing, doesn't it?

That "Hillman" is of course a Humber Sceptre, but we all knew that, didn't we? Cracking spots though!

I didn't, when I posted it on FB the day I spotted it! You'd think the knowledge would've sunk in by now, wouldn't you? Bloody typical...yoof of today...I dunno...

Cheers, Ross. I'd assumed that was a 'regular' Stag Ear, stickered up. I'll have a look at the YT vid shortly...

EDIT: That looked like fun...

Half ton isn't that miserable. I think our old Connect was the beefiest one you could buy and it couldn't manage much more.

Posted

Half-ton is pretty damn good actually. A SWB "series" Land Rover is only rated at half that! Bedford CA? Half-ton. Mk1 Escort van? 6 or 8 cwt. You get the idea. I'm actually quite impressed it's rated so high. These little vans (or more often, pickups) are rather popular here. And yes, I've had the BMW vision too!

Its more like a third of a ton.

But I do agree, half a ton is decent. If its to be believed.

I'm sure that Tommy Kaira Stagea was For Sale when I bought mine 3 years ago, must be a candidate for "the longest ever stint on a forecourt of a current business......!"

Must be a re-registration series, or a massive co-incidence...

Hmmm...

For the Cortina:

Date of Liability 01 02 2012

Date of First Registration 01 01 2005???

Year of Manufacture 1982

Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1998cc

CO2 Emissions Not Available

Fuel Type PETROL

Export Marker N

Vehicle Status Unlicensed

Vehicle Colour GOLD

Vehicle Type Approval Not Available

The Honda is not available - but *ST is an Inverness code, so who knows?

Posted

Maybe due to the lower population there were unused registrations from that area and the car was imported from Eire or Cyprus?

Though maybe it should be a Taunus then?

Great spots BTW :D

Posted

You might be right, I'd not spotted it was a LHD. As you say, top spots too.

Posted

If it's a Cortina with LHD, it might have been sold new somewhere like Gibraltar, where UK-familiar models are left-handed because it's a racing certainty they will be spending time in Spain. I'm struggling to think of anywhere else that a LHD Cortina might be supplied instead of a Taunus. Military export, perhaps?

Posted

I had a genuine WTF? moment, when I spotted the 'Tina's LHD-ness. Looks like the badges are original, so I don't think it's a Taunus rebadged. My best guess at the time, was that it had come back from the BAOR, and the service person had been stationed to somewhere in the Highlands, and therefore it had been re-registered in Inverness. But maybe the 2005 re-reg date knocks that idea on the head. Eddy and Iain's ideas are quite reasonable too, so who knows? It's an enigmatic Tina!

What made me wonder about the Dong Feng's payload, was the thought of it as a 6-seat microbus, like the old Subaru Sumo. Six adults on board could push the limit a bit. But then, with smallish wheels, and a 1300 engine, would you want to? A microbus isn't on the UK list from DFSK, so I suppose a half ton isn't so bad after all.

It seems my Dundee shite-hunting is far from over: coming back from Forfar on Friday, I spotted an elderly Bedford CF ice-cream van on the Kingsway. I wasn't quick enough to get a pic, but it won't elude me forever... 8)

By this point in time, I felt like the 'Shiters answer to Vince Noir, charming the fish out of Black Lake. I only had to ask the Gods Of Shite nicely, and they were lining up to be papped. And not an Old Gregg in sight...

Back up to Dundee it is then, see if the streak holds. Whaddaya know?...

...Tesco Riverside comes up trumps again. J-plate's pretty late for that type Audi 100, isn't it? And a Standard 8; haven't seen one of those since I was a wean. Ahhh, the 70's...where did you go?

Surely the staff car park at Tesco's Livingston RDC can't yield up some gems too? Oh yes...

IMAG0772.jpg

IMAG0788.jpg

IMAG0789.jpg

...I want to submit this one for the award for 'Longest And Stupidest Photo Title 2012' It goes like this; *ahem, clears throat*

One Of These 4x4's Is Only Suitable For Crashing Into A 50t Concrete Block Repeatedly From 30MPH, To See Which Dies First: Me Or It. The Other's Ideal For Towing The Wreckage Away To The Scrapyard/Morgue (Delete As Applicable). Eyethankyouverrmuch.

Thanks again for all the suggestions on the reg of the 'Tina in the previous instalment. If I had some AS business/calling cards, I'd go round there and stick one under its' wiper, see if I could get a chat with its' lucky owner. I've a funny feeling the green 2000E Mk3 above is known to one or two people on here, so its' provenance might be easier to establish!

Until next time, cheers...Neil.

That last photo is brilliant, you can't help but wonder who parked first - my money's on the modern.

Those Standard 8s were rare, even in the 70s - perhaps the Wet of Scotland dealt them a worse time than the east as I can't remember ever seeing one as a child, not even when I was roaming the carpark when mum was shopping with my little notebook taking down numberplates.

Cyprus is literally bulging with these things, there's one on every corner. I'll pap a few over the next few days if there's going to be enough interest. What I don't see very much of here is the estate version with the funky rear lights:

800px-Mitsubishi_Lancer_3_Estate_Cottenham.jpg

I couldn't find a pic of the back of an estate! Wonder why Proton didn't buy this tooling when they bought the saloons?

Actually, my first thought was 'You drove that all the way from Lithuania?' Surely a first class air fare would've been cheaper? The other 'SK' 'PL' and 'LT' cars there, are much more modest. Or they did the sensible thing, and bought a cheapo here.

Actually thinking about it, you're probly right. My associations of the Standard badge are most likely from the odd Vanguard, which I'm sure were floating around my native Paisley at the time. I parked behind the LDV, and wandered round, feeling pleased I was about to put an A35 in my collection; imagine my surprise when...

Does make you wonder. The UK budget market was an important one for them, and cheap estates always sold well here, so you think they'd have gone for it wouldn't you? One of life's little mysteries!

O ye great Gods of shite, deliver unto me a C10 Lancer estate I beseech thee. What should I leave by way of an offering?

I suspect the gods will require something in the order of a custard-yellow pre-facelift Fiat 128 Panorama...

Sitting here in the mahogany panelled splendour of the master's study within CJ towers*, I've been thinking* over whether I shouldn't just close this thread off, and start CJ's Odds'n'Ends 3. I mean, it's got a bit big and bulky, hasn't it? If I printed it out, and laid the sheets end to end, it might actually fall off the end of the oak banqueting table, down in the great hall of CJ towers*! That would never do.

There again, I might just keep it going, out of a perverse curiosity to see if I can fill the moat* outside CJ towers with just one spottings thread. That would be marvellous. And it might even serve to repel the owners of brand new cars!

Either way, every time I change the title, I have a little thought for Odds'n'Ends 1, which is forever lost in the vastness of cyberspace now. So, as a little tribute, I'll fling a few of the early spots, and the latest batch. Now and Then, if you will. Enjoy.

The first time I took phone camera in hand, took a pic and promised myself to post it here, it was this sad article...

HarlequinSaxo.jpg

Goldie combo, probly basking in the glow of the smoothest 500yds of tarmac in Fife...

Goldiecombo.jpg

Never seen this car since. Pity, 'cos I wouldn't mind a matt black 5-series...

MattBlk5Series.jpg

This came up on eBay shortly after. Described as a show winner, I could only imagine the show was judged by David Blunkett...

MutantWTFPeugeot.jpg

Don't know if I've ever chucked this in; the guy is called Mario, he is a plumber, and he is short and stocky, with dark hair and a moustache. He's also Polish. Why oh why oh why, couldn't he be just a little bit Italian? Would it be too hard to just pretend? Say "Its-a me-a, a-Mario" just once in a while?

15-02-06_0937.jpg

This one is a pearoast, tho'. But only 'cos I had a good look at it again on Sunday, and there's a name on the side. 'C.B.Attride, Manston, Kent - Traction Engine Transport'. The truck's headboard reads 'Lulubelle'. Ring any bells with anyone in that part of the world? Her reg is 'MUC 533L' btw.

IMAG0370.jpg

On to the 'now' part.

Who's for a little game? It's called 'Wheres Polo'. Like 'Wheres Wally', but better.

IMAG0848.jpg

I was struck by just how small it looked between the cars either side. Even granted its' low stance, it's been dwarfed by 'progress'. Nicely tatty, and nice rims.

IMAG0847.jpg

Spot of the week, for me is this. It filled my rear view mirror quite quickly, even at 70, and as it passed, it took me a second to twig what I was looking at. Isuzu V-Cross RS anyone? Can't half shift - the Volvo needed a good bootful to catch it!

IMAG0880.jpg

Haven't had any tractor shite for a wee while, so I papped this old stager without hesitation. It's a SAME Tiger 100...

IMAG0868.jpg

I've mentioned before, just how much of a shite-haven Tesco's at Riverside in Dundee is. Last time I was there, I thought the mojo had gone - just a shit Hyundai, and a Copen for my i-spy moment. The Gods Of Shite saw fit to leave this peach next to the Volvo on my return...

IMAG0845.jpg

There's a fierce little terrier in there, who objected to my snapping. Either that or he was going to jump me for my pie'n'Bru. Get it right up ye, Rover...the pie's all mine. Besides, you'd have to be the size of a terrier to get in there.

IMAG0846.jpg

Oh, and there was this Allure-ing little Frenchie too...

IMAG0842.jpg

That'll do for now, I think.

But there is one more thing, before I bid you goodnight: go back to the first pic of the Unimog, and look up the hill at the back. That last house on the right hand side there, 'behind' the tree - that's 'The Murder House'. Right on the corner of Roseangle and Perth Rd, it should be somebody's pride (or half a dozen student flats). It would be expensive if it ever came to market. If. It's been abandoned since 1980. Only drunken students go in there now. Even the junkies avoid it.

Sleep tight, and don't have nightmares, now! Mwahahahahahahahaha.........

Posted

Is that murder house story true?

I had a thing with a chap who lived on Roseangle a few years back and drove/walked past the house on numerous occasions. I'd never heard the story, and he never mentioned anything, and a little bit of googling reveals the same text on numerous websites and a YouTube video that he's been reposted but dissapeared as its been made private.

I'm smelling urban myth...

Isuzu Vehicross. They're pretty rare, even in Japan.

Three for sale on Tradecarview just now: http://www.tradecarview.com/used_car/ja ... vehicross/

It's a 3.2 V6

That Isuzu is a JDM on a County Antrim plate, possibly brought in by Eden Car Sales, which is about 3 miles from here. There's a red one knocking about. I think they're something like a 3 litre pez.

Sadly this one's verifiably true: Glasgow Herald, May 20th 1980. There are other articles, from the Courier and the Scotsman, and reports from the trial and convictions, but I can't find them right now.

My other half studies at Duncan of Jordanstone, and knows of a few folk there who've done 'research' ( ). A couple of her friends who grew up in Dundee remember it; but her studio-mate lived in the student halls right next to it, and didn't know. And she's a murder obsessive. Probly because it's in the heart of studentland, the knowledge about it is a bit patchy. It's not surprising you or your chap hadn't heard of it - neither had I 'til 3 months ago!

Chatting to her about it today, apparently the rumour is, the house is close to condemnation, due to the tree growing up thro' it.

Anyhoo...the Vehicross. I thought that was what it was called - one of my kids has a model of one, and that's how it's described on the bottom. The one I spotted definitely had 'V-Cross' on the B-pillar. Very odd. The 3.2 V6 would account for how it took off!

I think there were a handful sent to America, and I know there's a few fans of them in Oz. This one was definitely RHD, so it'll be JDM alright. Mind you, I see a Norn Irn reg, and assume they're cheap vanity plates (unless it's near the local road building stramash), so it's nice to know a little bit more about this one. I think I want one now.

There's not enough eye bleach in the entire universe. Actually, I was trying to work out whether it should be encased in lead, and dropped into the Mariana Trench, or whether something resembling it already lives there. If both, that would produce some damned unholy offspring...

I'm sure it was my South African uncle, who lives in Oz who was talking about these before; iirc they're liked in both countries as imports, because most of the Isuzu 4x4's are mechanically pretty interchangable and you can make an awesome outback/veldt racer out of various bits. (Presumably much the same as the rally one that Tayne's posted.) Apparently they handle pretty well, due to the small body equalling a lower c-of-g, and the 3.2 V6 is no slouch (and very tunable).

So I'll amend my previous statement;

My cousin studied at Dundee Uni 1989-93 and lived in student digs on Perth Road.

I gave him an exhaust the other week and need to ask him if it went on ok, so I'll see if he knows about this house.

EDIT: Just looked at it on Streetview and realised that when I was on a stag do in Dundee a couple of years ago we strayed off Perth Road and tried to get into Laings Bar next door to it. We werent gettign in and I remember waiting just up the street for those that did get in to come back out. Didnt realise where I was standing right outside!

Or; The Already Pretty Bad, The Even Worse, and the OMG! MY EYES! MY BEAUTIFUL EYES! PASS THE EYE BLEACH... but that wouldn't have fitted in the title bar.

So here we all are again, dear friends; Vol 2 lives to fight on. I'll leave this Photobucket link here, 'cos there's more pictures of the Murder House here, that I took the other day. I never noticed, until I spent 5 minutes actually looking at it, that it does have a garage. So I'd definitely live there. And I'd have my audio studio in the murder cellar; it's been a while since I did death metal, and it would be a great place to start...

Oooohhh, a tidy Scorpio!

IMAG0897.jpg

Let's have a look on the side, and see if it's an Ultima...

IMAG0899.jpg

...yes, but by the look of that arch, the badge should have '-te Moneypit' after the 'Ultima' bit. Poor old thing's actually crying from its' quarterlight. I'd cry too if someone's idea of maintenance was to stick a cut-out naked lady on me.

Early Sierra with the slopey grille-less front, so it'll be a Ghia then(?).

Stand very still. It's a mortally wounded Marina. If it hasn't seen you, there's a chance to get away. Be careful tho', one cock-eyed stare, and it'll make your eyes explode and your legs work backwards.

IMAG1026.jpg

But wait; it's worse than that. There's a slumbering Allegro beside it. It's roadworthy, and if it wakes up, it'll leap on you from there, knock you unconscious with a colostomy bag full of rancid Horlicks, and make you wear beige slacks. THE HORROR!

IMAG1027.jpg

Yours truly is braver than all that tho'; I laugh in the face of BL beige-ness. They are cunning those BL's tho'. They knew to leave this in sight as a tempter.

And so to the 'Other' section. I did mention there would be one, didn't I? SIT DOWN...just because the bell rang, doesn't mean you can leave. It's a signal to me, not you

I got a blurry photo of this, passing me a few weeks ago. Once I found it tipping steel at a local fab yard I had a good look at it; the '525' badge on the side told me why a DAF tiddler didn't have a hope against it...

IMAG0978.jpg

Finally, the culture spot. How's about a nice bit of sculpture?

IMAG0336.jpg

This lives outside a car park in Dundee. You might be wondering what it's deeper meaning in the context of AS is: there's no actual car, just a steel frame covered in fibreglass. Discuss...
