Just a thought, but could one of the net sleuths obtain a phone number for the eccentric residence? (i am looking at you SOC).... There must be some mileage in ringing up e_r's mum and letting her know that her little darling is being a pest/making an arse of himself on the internet (again)

Funny.

18:28 I could just phone his mum, tell her what he's doing and wait for the slap...

18:29 Blodwyn: ha ah

hello is that richards mum?

can you punch him in the face please, as hes being annoying

oh im sorry - i ll deal with that now for you

SLAP

18:30 me: "Hi, I'm from the internet..."

18:31 Blodwyn: ha ha

Chaceracer, This isnt LOTF and he sure as hell isn't piggy. the only animal instinct he raises is annoyance..

This isnt LOTF ......

No, it seems more like LOTR as there seem to be a number of Orcs about :(

We wouldn't have this problem if he'd just hobbit.....

The reason I am still taking a stand here is I know the destructive power of the "Chatty Troll" I've seen it before, it is written in the annals of internet history many times about how a happy community are torn apart by a seemingly innocent stranger, welcomed by all at first only to post heaps and heaps of total drivel. I have personally survived many such trollings, but if the community is divided by the troll nothing is ever the same again.

Once upon a time there was a forum, It was a happy forum with many interesting threads and a happy, friendly community, One day a new member joined, Let's call him, NU SCHOOL, This NU SCHOOL chap posted thread after thread of rubbish, telling everyone about all the cars he owns and his opinions on everything but never posted prove to any of it.

As time went on the happy forum community got tried of this and started to rebel against him as frankly he was pissing everyone off, People started to question the forum's moderators on why they wouldn't do anything to help with the insane drivel that kept coming out of this NU SCHOOL's mouth, minute after minute, hour after hour, (A few members had come across this character before on another forum and could foresee what was going to happen) but it fell on deaf ears.

As the weeks went by the forum started to turn ugly and the friendly community started to break apart, Then came one wet, winters evening and all hell broke lose, several long term and well respected members started to made a stand, "It's him or us" they shouted, Again the moderators ignored their pleas, So they cancelled their accounts and never came back.

NU SCHOOL, seeing that his work there was done, left as well but the forum was never the same again...

THE END :D

I've been in a foul mood most of the day because my favourite little forum seems to be turning to shit.

Bugger it, he's going in my bin.

Fuck what I said earlier.... He's annoying, clogging the place with shitty "ideas" and pissing on our collective parade and he even told me that because I like itals my voice counted for nought.

Yeah, but you like Marinas and Itals, so I think we can discount your views (no offence, but you do have wonderfully terrible taste in cars) :P

Piss over to pistonheads or some such where you can discuss straight 6s.

The depressing truth is that you cannot underestimate the lengths some people will go to in order to disrupt internet forums.

Check this shit out: http://www.teamtechnology.co.uk/troll-tactics.html

Plenty of boxes ticked there.

My advice would be either to take the Mr_Bollox line - treat it as an elaborate wind-up and take the piss accordingly - or just completely ignore. Trolls are only there to poke the wasps' nest, and when the angry buzzing dies down they get bored and go away. Then come the tears: hot, salty trails of inadequacy and self-hatred, a-coursing down their soft, red cheeks.

:D

Hmm, that definition is not really what I would call trolling, just people who seek attention.

See Encyclopedia Dramatica (NSFW) for some stories of real, co-ordinated trolling. It does happen.

There are those on here that have responded to fire with fury, and others who are feeling uncomfortable with the way that a newbie is being treated/bullied/disrespected. However, the comment quoted by yourself above shows that the Autoshite way is not being respected by the newb - and you, in turn, are not being respected because of the cars that you like.

Now the Marina and the Ital are not cars that I aspire to or would want to own, but in this wonderful community of shite, where the shite is all right, that is fine - you love the Ital, and that's fine by me, and many others may feel the same. If I see an Ital or Marina, I will endevour to take photographs and post them up - I might not want to own one, but I do like being reminded that they were built and driven. If you happen to buy an Ital and post pictures of it, the Autoshite community does not immediately launch an attack on the buyer's sanity, but congratulates them on their purchase, even if it is not to everyone's taste. I certainly would think that that's really good, because you've bought a car that you like.

Trigger too has made a fair point - I am aware of such an occurance happening on another forum*, and I don't wish it to happen to this one. I am uncomfortable with the fact that one person on the board has deemed that another's viewpoints are not worthy because of the type of car that they like. I feel that this needs dealing with sooner rather than later.

With phpb3, is it possible to suspend an account's ability to post for a period of time?

Is there any way we can get someone (Top Gear, maybe?) to drop a church organ onto a 5 series?

I have to add, sometimes trolling isn't deliberate and it is just someone who doesn't know when to shut up. Case in point - a certain single-make forum (same initials as Batchelor of Science, or Bronze Swimming Certificate) was joined by a friendly, enthusiastic chap who had recently become an owner. 100% a real person, meant no harm at all, but he made 2,000 posts in 6 months, answered everything in sight (or site) and caused several long time, useful members to wander off elsewhere. Someone even joined as a loltroll with a parody of his username to try and get him to shut up, it didn't work. Then he sold up and bought a focus, and was never heard of again, but it was too late. Forum was fucked, the core membership didn't come back.

I think he's posted less than the sum amount of the posts replying to and about him.

Posted

You are probably right, this is on 10 pages* now without a single E-R post, but he's catalyzing the turmoil... He has a reply for everything, so FFS lets stop replying to him. This thread can die too as soon as the crisis is passed.

So we all know what to do this evening when he appears? Good.

*edit: It does have the highest count of solara/tagora pictures for quite a while, which is encouraging really. Bit like singing songs in the bomb shelter waiting for the raid to pass!

Any way last time I walked past Ryton it was being turned into a trendy apartment development.

I think you're thinking of the Stoke plant. Ryton is still a flat field of broken bricks.

Air raid has started..

As for the rest of the thread, if you have a problem with any member stick them on your foes list and let that be an end to it.

Ah quite possibly! Trouble is every street you walk down in Coventry used to be a car/motorbike/etc factory of some sort. I did take my Triumph to the Canley sainsburys when i was still at Cov uni. :?

[small voice} I quite like the wheels, I just think it needs the arch clearances sorting.. [/qv]

Much :D Still a bit too much wheel and not enough tyre for my liking though. I'm not really a fan of alloys, they are just an expensive way of getting a wheel that looks worse, weighs more, is less airtight, and is weaker than a steel wheel.

Stylised steel wheels, FTW.

Posted

Depends on the alloy used to make the wheel.

The split-rim Compomotives on the 4.2 SD1 were very light indeed. Lighter than any 15" steel rim I can think of. A fair bit lighter than the alloys on the 3.5, and a lot lighter than the ones on the Jag.

Yes, but most alloy wheels aren't like that. Most of the common or garden alloys I've handled are much heavier than steels. Manufacturers fit alloys because they are cheap to make, not because they are better in any way.

Posted

Surely a pressed steel wheel is cheaper than a cast alloy? Especially when you factor in finishing costs and paint.

My MAG Industries wheels on my old beetle were incredibly light. Lighter than the 145/65R15 budgets wrapped around them by far.....

What ever happened to wooden wheels?

Posted

Just because alloy wheels can be light doesn't mean they all are. Casting an alloy wheel is cheaper than pressing and assembling a steel wheel, that's why manufacturers have started fitting alloys with wheeltrims to base models.

Posted

It would be ironic if after all that we fall out over wheel types

I don't care, as long as the tyres hold air and have tread on them. And norm.. it's Aluminium! Bloody colonials. :P

ER has gone. Thread is now finished... argue about wheels somewhere else and let Ryton die in peace
