much gutted - you will recall the 205 Gti was trashed by some wee scrotes trying to nick it last month...well Chaucer got in touch today with the engineers report - the total bill is over 3 grand - i had a long chat withthe engineer abo0t doing a cat C - he is a kit lover and a classic specialst and even with a cat C claim the insurance money won't cover 2nd hand parts and the small amount of professional help I would need

so -it will be going

leaves me with 2 volvo estates and a camper van

I am thinking I might sell the torsy and use the insurance plus the torsy money to get somthing else

seriously considering a sorted and original Mk2 8v Gti

much fun and I know these cars well - cheap to fix and to run!

it has to be a reliable fun, cheap to run daily that youd be happy to put kids in

any ideas?

not worth it - had a long hard look at this and will end up being out of pocket by 300 quid on top of the excess - can't afford the hit just now

was thinking about an Alfa -know nothing about them bnut I understand that some are tough and the 6cyls can be especially so

Sorry to hear that :(

It looked a nice example too from the pictures you posted.

Bad news. What a bunch of arse.

If you PM me what they quoted to buy it back I will pass it onto Ian and see if we can get someone on the 205GTi forum to stump up the cash for it. It looked good would be a shame to let it go to waste.

205 gt up for grabs if you want - come and get it. will be good for parts all panels straight - front seats missing.

collect from south wales.

It's shame you're left with no option through the insurers - nice to see you would've ended up paying for the repairs anyway, what is the point?

Bummer.

A nice Mk2 Gti would be a good replacement though. Quite like the idea one one myself.

just been on a 70 mile round trip in the camper van to collect my gubbins from the Gti - its a hell of a mess they have literally ripped out the whole of the iwring loom from under the dash, bent the door aperture frame, ripped out the entire central consul including all the heater controlls, clock etc. I was in 2 minds about recovering it but one look at the damage, espeically with an imobilizer in there - it would need an auto electrician and a new wiring loom - not a diy job for me i smilny don't have the time

real shame though

Bah. Sorry to hear this. Looked like a nice unmolested one too.

Hi Aled,

If you PM me details I will get him to post it on the forum.

This is a downer, what a shit outcome. Can it not be put on the 205 forum as a cat C but excellent base for a track day car?

You need the Second Amendment over there.

No, we don't.

End of.

Sorry about the 205

BUT

I had one of those ^^ a g-plate and last of the thin bumpers and completely as it left the factory. I didn't stop smiling for the 4 years that I had it.

Ran it for 70k miles and never let me down, would get 40mph easy on a motorway and 19mpg when I was being a hooligan.

Sold it to get a Range Rover oh and to hang onto my licence

I'd have another but finding one which hadn't been slammed to the floor  and generally been fucked over would be the problem :(

edited to add piccy of it. Man I miss that car

That is rubbish news Scooters. Am happy to post something up on the 205 drivers site if you want to flog some bits on or break it. Or is it off to the great 205 scrapyard in the sky?

I hate scroats.

I've had a few Mk2 Golf GTis. Last 8v I had suffered from HGF, but between two cylinders so it sounded like the engine was cabbaged.

£40 and a trip to Luton later and I had an AGG engine from a Mk3. Fitted the Mk2 PB head and injection system to it, along with an Audi 80 distributor and it was fantastic. Not much quicker, if any, but it had a lot more grunt and was quite a bit better on fuel. Overtaking stunts that would normally require 3rd gear could be done in 5th. On B roads it was as quick as a 16v and a lot more relaxed.

This was my last one.

Couple of years earlier I ran an early, LHD Mk2 8v which had been a recce car for someone to do with VW motorsport. 370k on the clock and other than the heater being crap it was an ace little thing. Properly sorted suspension made a real difference to it.

There's a guy lives up the street from me has never had anything other than Mk2 Golfs... runs 'em into the ground. Another bloke a bit further up just sold his E34 520i Touring and got a very tidy GTI (with white paint so thick it looks like the enamel on one of those AGA things)... years ago a woman across the road had a metallic blue/green H-reg GTI too...

Mk2 Golfs are cracking cars though. If they are looked after they are seemingly indestructable.

If I can find a good one and stick it on a classic policy I'll be very tempted.

The golf Gti I had was my first dabble in the world of kit

great car it was a bog standard wee bumper in muddy green 3 door 8v GTi - it had a thin red stripe down the bumpers - you remember the type - except for the usual bolster wear it was a cracking car - loved every minute of owning it

bought for 500 - 20,000 miles - oil service, brakes and a fan cowal and then sold 2 years later for 500 quid having taken me over europe and up and down the country loads....replaced with a 1996 523i from my father in law which cooked its head in 3 months and was written off

Sorry to hear about the 205, atleast there's still a few out there.

A couple of years ago I spent quite a while trying to find a nice/clean 3dr 16v Mk2 Golf. I had a few stipulations (nothing too unrealistic) as I am a bit of a picky bastard at times but I just could not find one out there that met my requirements for a decent price (less than £3k).. and I spent about 6 months looking.

I really dont have any affection for that whole 'scene', especially seeing as my hometown has a bit of a reputation for them, but I would have liked to try one for a while.

..I like 205s too, but I passengered in a GTI and it semed a bit cramped for me and I felt a bit vulnerable. However, I passengered in a 5 door diesel once (think it was NA) a few years before this and was somewhat surprised that I liked it.
