Just for a change, I thought I would buy a car not under the influence and seems to have turned out well! A 1989 FORD ESCORT XR3I, 108k, no history, been garage kept until 2001 and stored off road since 2004. No holes underneath, interior is pretty good, immobiliser, original and unmolested. Another winter project

Wow! Haven't seen the placca wheeltrims for ages! I wonder what percentage left the factory with those? Bit like Mini Ones really, sort of an assumed mandatory option to get alloys.

Winter project? What's to do on it? It looks lovely! As for plastic wheeltrims, my MG Maestro had them too, I actually couldn't remember ever seeing a set before I bought the car.

Nice purchase!, I haven't seen those trims for a long while, and the one's i have seen are always the white versions, I guessing it must be a good one seeing that it hasn't had alloys fitted.

Great purchase. But don't you even think about remove those wonderful spotlights! :D

I had one of those new (E985AVX. Probably a fridge door by now). I think the wheeltrims should be white IIRC.

i also had 1 in the same colour..proper dog-leg alloys though :D

In answer to a few of the above. Got her locally for £300. She needs an mot as been dry stored since 2004, always garage kept since 2001 apparently. The tailgate hinge has seized from lack of use, engine doesnt smoke but a couple of the hydraulic tappets could do with being replaced. Couple of scabs to sort and top side is good, battery tray minty, the towbar is going asap though. And the interior is great and the sunroof doesnt even leak! I quite like the plastic trims as it shows further that the car is unmolested, for a change I am happy!!!!!! :D

Thats very nice. I think these look so right unmolested, much better than when they have been 'barried'.

These are starting to go for a fair bit of money these days. Good buy.

Nice.

Try xrstyle.co.uk should you need anything for it.

sounds like a great buy, I'd love an unmolested 3i - preferably a Mk3 but a nice Mk4 would certainly be most welcome on my driveway.

Like it. Been thinking about trying to find something like that for a while now, or an RS Turbo but that would be too much £££ and I would be scared to use it.

Looks nice. 8)

I actually prefer the appearance of those wheel trims over the XR3i alloy wheel choice.

These MKIV Escorts fluctuate in value quite a bit, I dont think there is too many stupidly priced ones just yet. They had lost the alloys by the end of the production, being given fairly basic wheel trims which were, in all honestly, awful. Its certainly uncommon to see them wearing those wheels now, and I havent seen one in red for a while. A good price, nice work. My college had one of equal age, and it was actually more rotten than it let on, especially behind the headlights.

I have had a good poke round and cant see any rot as yet but there are plenty of other places to look!

Being an 89 F plater it shouldnt be too rusty, it was the D reg Fords that rusted the worst. My dad had an F plate 1989 XR3i in black from 1995-2003 it was then sold to a friend of mine who had liked the car since my dad first bought it. He still owns it and is taking good care of it. It proved to be a very reliable car for my Dad and passed every MOT without a fail during his ownership, he replaced it with a MKI Mondeo which is to be replaced soon.
