Following the Renault 14's comprehensive victory over the Fiat Strada, it's now time for it to face the heaviest hitter in its weight division, the Austin Allegro (and derivatives).

The bookies' favourite:

The underdog:

Oh, and Leonard, we know you don't like these threads. We really do. We get it.

No need to tell us again.

Many years ago I had a Russett Brown Allegro. Despite being an almost pristine, low mileage and few owner car, it was bloody awful!

I like the R14. Haven't seen one in years.

Allegro it is then.

My music teacher, circa 1988, when talking about Allegros:

"They've got a great view of the road though. Through the rust hole in the floor."

Even though I'm more of a British car enthusiast, its got to be the R14 for me, for its rareness and the fact my Dad had one when I was a tot. Loved that car to bits.

I voted R14 again, I think I'd like to own an Allegro maybe, especially something exciting like a 1750 SS, and i think the last ones, the Series 3 with the twin headlights are quite good looking really.

Was there ever a sporty R14?.

I think the R14 is true shite- Vanished from the roads and virtually forgotten by all except shite enthusiasts. The Allegro is just too obvious. When many people think of a shite car, they think Allegro!

I have given the Agg my vote though, simply out of loyalty ;).

Feel the same, so voted 14. Allegro 3 was quite a looker, I think!

I voted Allegro, although it was a close call.

I have my eye on one (Allegro) at the moment so may be soon able to score a double whammy of shiteness!

I don't know if I actually understand this shite off thing but I voted Allegro because I'd rather have one of them.

Totally agree - really quite smart looking!

I went for the Allegro as at least the Renault looked a bit more interesting and hasn't dated so badly. I would still like to get an Allegro, in brown or beige of course, just to say I had. Very much doubt I could stand it for longer than a week though

The Allegro is what most people think of when they think of shite, old cars. R14 is the more obscure, unloved and generally forgotten of the two and on that basis it gets my vote!

14! We had four in succession when I was a kid, R-plate to W-plate, I think mainly because they kept rusting and having to be thrown away when they got to be two years old. Personal favourite was WTH882T, a GTL in marron glace (=metallic chestnut brown) with tan velour seats and those stamped Serck number plates in computer writing. I heart 1979.

Allegro estates are cool though.
