ATS Euromaster - Big sale

Thought I’d hit the jackpot. Michelin Pilot Sport 3 for £42 (215/45 R 17) . Sadly just the one.

Shame they're closing, spent 5 years grafting for them on commercial tyres many moons ago. There are still 4 or 5 lads who worked for them at the same time (but on the car side) and are still there now.

Bummer - spoke to two of the local places this morning - neither can fill my order.
One did say that there's a bit of an upcock on the website and that the 'deal' should only be on tyres they have on the shelf. He did have a look for me and there's nowt for me available.

YMMV.

I've not had a call or email to say it isn't happening so I shall shortly be setting off for my new death rings to be fitted 🤞

Those Yartu things are alright, they often feature in my meticulous preparation process

ATS are a joke and won’t be missed though.

I've got a couple of new Yartus going on the back of my A4 next weekend which will match the fronts and replace some very perished Avons, one of which has a slow puncture.

I've been using these for the past few years on the Audi and the recently departed Volvo V70 and have honestly been really impressed with them. While neither are performance cars, they have been driven quite hard on occasion and have not given any wheelspin leaving junctions, aquaplaning or any noticeable extra understeer or snap oversteer like I've experienced with other budget brands.

If you're in need of something cheap to sling on a fairly normal car and they're still available in the correct size then I'd absolutely recommend them.

Mrs JJ’s Berlingo is going up for sale next week and one of them was an advisory so I’ve just booked in for a budget to be fitted. Bargain.

Dropped off, no issues bar a fronts or rears question then we walked to Burger King now where I'm having a fatty wagu burger 👌

When we walked in he looked up and asked 'tyres?' and I responded with yes, 2 of your finest chinesium death rings, I'm an 11.30?' and he smiled and took my keys

My son saw a bear in the workshop too

Then this email with an 'inspection' which I started to laugh at but it's only for the tyres. Seems they were due changing at least at mm. Wearing nice and evenly though

Got my 4x quality* Tigar Summer 3s for the Alphard today, £170 for four fitted tyres of that size is not to be sniffed at.

I'm sure like any chain the service is variable, but the one local to me have always been really good, they done a good job today and the lad I dealt with was really nice. Sad to see them close but sounds like their skills are plenty in demand locally and they'd got a decent payout, certainly the lad I spoke to was sorted with something else.

I was really impressed with the Westlake all seasons I had on my 5 series, got me up some pretty slippery hills when it snowed earlier this year. I'm a certified tyre snob but that did change my mind a bit

Absolutely agreed ! Last year, I invested £80 in a pair of all season Westlakes for my daily, hoping they would tide me over for a few weeks until I could afford something better.

That never became necessary ; I've now driven around 7k on them, in all conditions, and they are just as good as the "midrange" tyres I normally buy (Falken, Kumho, Toyo, Yokohama).

Oooh these are new, let us know how they fare!

Tigar was acquired by Michelin in 2010 as a budget brand, so my guess is they would be heavily leaning into some older Michelin’s casting for those. These are rated higher than previous iteration on the label (C-B-B) so in theory shouldn’t be godawful.

Not paid that for a tyre since about 1989 and that was a 155R13.

Actually looking at the price of the tyre alone, I’ve paid more for a push bike tyre.

Getting two of these fitted to the daughter's Golf on Tuesday in South Shields, size 205/55/16 for £69.20!

Had a quick look - they're only quoting on gold plated Michelins for fronts and nothing for rears now on ours.
(Running the Bini on 'Runway' tyres that were fitted in 2019 - about 10,000 miles on them now - absolutely fine. Would buy those again)

Looks like they're getting even cheaper, I paid a whopping £170 odds just a few days ago.

205/55 r16 "control" size is even cheaper too

ATS were always a strange company. My last job included visiting all their depots in the south east to test/repair/calibrate their torque wrenches and air inflation equipment. (Also CP7 test their oxy/acetylene and nitrogen equipment).

Compared to Kwik fit they were very inefficient re the amount of work they got through each day. A bit laid back even.

Some depots despite being in old buildings were spotlessly clean and everything I needed to test was readily to hand. As a rule these places were manned by the more mature staff who took pride in their branch. (Lymington Worthing Fareham Crowborough)

Other depots were right shit tips where everything was too much trouble. Tools were either broken or missing and invariably run by youngsters who treated the place as a stepping stone. (Hastings Dartford Crawley Lowestoft)

Shame really. I think long-term underinvestment, mismanagement and inept business strategy has contributed to their downfall.

What was the Eastbourne one like? It was next to a pub which has has a bit of a dodgy rep at times over the years.

Yes that was a bit of a tip (the pub and Ats) but to be fair the building was old and tired. The lads inside seemed decent enough though and looked after their equipment. I guess the plot of land it's on is worth a few quid.

They had a mobile van that worked out of there too so I had to visit the depot twice a year and also the van which was only there first thing in the morning so to kill two birds with one stone I did them both at the same time but it was always a pain in the arse to get to Eastbourne for 8am.

Best bit about that depot was the snack van outside the pub and the MK3 Escort convertible rotting in the car park. Are either still there ?

Edit.  I've found a picture of my van at ATS Eastbourne circa 2021.

I've not seen the snack van there for a while. I'd forgotten about the Escort, will look more closely next time I pass.

Got a call today for my order of four Continentals. They've cancelled it as there's only 1 tyre in the warehouse and the website is still taking orders for tyres they don't have.

Fuck sake.

In my personal experience, I find all the tyre chains extremely variable in their quality and attitude. Some are great and really helpful , others are absolute twats. It’s difficult to say , if anyone is better or worse overall.

That bear looks like it’s hung itself at the news of ATS winding up.

Now I think I wish I'd made more of the boy being with me and got him to ask about it. Probably stinks after living there for however long though 😂
