What (If any) moderns float your boat?

This is an old car site, we know that, but we have to assume that most of us are general "Car Enthusiasts", meaning we are also interested to some degree in moderns, "Proper" classics, exotica etc?

Was just wondering what, if anything, you see driving about at the moment, and think "I'm gonna have one of those one day"....Here's my list of current cars that I hope to own once they're in my price range....The "Peanuts" price range, that is!:

- Volvo C30....Especially in white.

- Skoda Yeti....No idea why, but I just want one!

- Saab 9-5....The new one. Looks fantastic....Even though it isn't.

- Mazda 6 Sport....Again, in white preferably.

- Mazda 2 3-door....Super little car.

- Hyundai Grandeur....See Shitebarges thread elsewhere.

- Citroen C6....Soooo desirable.

- Alfa Spider....I know they're rubbish....Very pretty though.

All of the above will turn my head, without fail, whenever I see one....Anything doing it for you at the moment? :D

I quite like the look of the Fiat 500 and Alfa MiTo.

But I'm dreaming.

Volvo C30. Check. But in that light metallic blue.

Maserati Quattroporte too.

Now I'm bloody having nightmares.

If I were to buy a new car, which is unlikely, it would have to be a UK built one and a Defender SWB would be top of the list!

Fiat 500: yeah, they're the 'new new Mini' but they look ace (especially in white with the funky stripes) and I expect they're pretty good to own.

Insignia: I like the modern, swoopy look of them and they appear quite flash for a common or garden rep-mobile. If they're not plagued by stupid fucking sensor problems like the Vectra C I'll get one one day.

C30: with you on that one.

*Dons flame proof overalls*: Toyota Prius. Yes I know they're looked on as some sort of lentil hugger's special but the economy and road tax costs look good and I quite like look of them in a perverse way.

Alfa 159: Back end is a bit of a cop out (as in looks far too much like the 156) but the front looks fantastic.

Supercharged Range Rover.

Merc E63 AMG.

Alloy body XJR

Nothing much else out there interests me at the mo, although the 3.6 litre Skoda Superb would probably be a good sensible car in a few years.

As a car dealer who daily buys and sells mordern conformist shite, There are very few cars i would be tempted to have. The Vovlo C30 in white with R design trim, and a Citroen C6, must be black. Everything else is soo dull. and if i were forced to buy a new car to last forever with no issues, it would have to be a subaru legacy, not too keen on the latest offerings though, looks like a Toyota avensis type thing. The fiat 500 I like, but I fear it will go te same way as the "new" mini and the "new beetle" and be bought by people who "try to impress" i.e: the type that would normally have bought a silver polo, but awoke that morning feeling a wee bit brave. He will still insist that the wife revese parks it next to his silver Golf/A4 on their recently powerwashed lockblock drive in suburbia.....

I think modern cars try too hard not to be dull and conservative, hence all the horrendous 'striking' designs we've seen in the last decade.

I have a lot of respect for Audi who, as I mentioned in another thread, make some very elegant cars.

Think I'd just have to buy a SEAT Exeo to avoid the image problem of modern Audis.

Purely from a selfish point of view, I do like the 1 series 3dr 8)8)8)

Other new cars I like mount to very few as most are bloated overstuffed recreations of their former incarnations.

Take for example the Fiesta or indeed the Mini. No longer small economical cars they once were.

The 3 series is another case. That is why I went for the 1 series, having looked at the dimesions of my E30s, the 1 is a very similar size.

There isn’t much out there at the moment which ‘floats my boat’ unfortunately. Pedestrian safety laws now dictate some of the horrendous van-like front ends we now see.

Personally, I’m a fan of most of Audi’s current range, particularly the A8. Largely a range of sensible designs and sensible interiors. Sticking to VAG briefly, I’ve also always been quite a fan of Skoda’s Fabia, Octavia and Superb. VW doesn't really do anything for me though, except for the current Scirocco at a push, perhaps.

Sticking to German, the Merc C63 AMG has a soft spot in my heart too. The noise AMG Merc's make alone... :)

Going back a few years, I was also a very big fan of the much-underrated Vectra C. A much nicer looking thing (and with rear seat space designed for people with heads) than the blamange that’s replaced it.

Seconded on the Maserati Quattroporte. The headlights are a bit dinky for my own liking but otherwise a very pretty car I'd love to own if I'd come into any money.

Oh yes, the Citroen C6. I have to bow to Citroen there - the only one I have a desire to own or at least experience in their range for the best part of 20 years (with the exception of the C15 van, of course!).

Are Alfa 166s modern enough? I love those cars. Other than that, Citroën C6, Maserati Quattroporte, Alfa 147, and that's about it.

Was thinking more of stuff currently on sale....Surely the 166 must be pretty-much in Shite territory already? :D

Well I've owned two of them, so I suppose they must...

3.6 litre [...] sensible car

Proof, if it were needed, that Pete's mind works in a different way to most folk :)

Iveco Turbo Daily. SWB, top engine option (can't remember what it is), ply-lined, sliding cargo doors both sides, towbar, white. Invisible, powerful, RWD, what more can one ask?

Fiat 500, now Chrysler isn't making the gorgeous (but fatally FWD) PT Cruiser any more. I had three of the old ones (2 cylinders in the back, air-cooled, etc, enormous fun) and I've been told the new one is nice to drive, so I'd like to find out.

Chevrolet Suburban. Well nobody said practicality was a consideration, did they? Anyway, 7 seats, V8, 4WD, all the toys, good enough!

Dodge Ram crewcab. As above, mostly! :D

Suzuki Ignis, believe it or not. Mrs Ramrod declared she wanted a "brand new" car so that's what we bought in 2006. It was the bottom of the range: 1.3, 5 doors, in red. Marvellous little tool, brilliant for nipping round town etc. We even did a couple of long trips in it, which it lapped up. Would have another, like a shot.

Yeh, theres a few moderns about that I'd happily have -

SEAT Exeo - probably as an estate though.

Renault Sport Gordini. In blue.

Alfa Giulietta. Yeh I know its a really a Fiat Bravo but what the hell.

Audi R8. I'm never going to have one but hey its nice to have a dream.

Volvo S80 V8

Ford Falcon XR8 - They've got a terrible Hoon image here, but I honestly think the V8 engine has had it's day with Ford Australia and these may be the last of the line....

Kia Koup - only 500 to be sold here.......

Hyundai Grandeur.

Reliabilty, build quality, something that will actually get you where you're going, accelerator pedals that don't have a stupid fucking bolt on the bottom that sticks into rubber flooring, non-self destruct gearboxes, headlights and back windows that don't attempt to fall out, fuel pumps that don't give up within 100 miles of being brand new, wiring not made from damp spaghetti, dealers that care, on board computer things that work, calipers that don't fuck up every two weeks, brakes that work, indicators that indicate, exhaust brakes that don't disintegrate, seat covers that don't start to dismantle their thread because you looked at them the wrong way and the ability not to drive you completely and utterly insane within about ten days tops?

Sorry, I need to take my pills again

Exactly! I've driven Sprinters, that's why I carefully specified the Iveco!

Vauxhall VX220 - an Elise with an unfashionable badge (in sports car circles I mean, not here), and a better engine. Likely to be cheaper and more fun in years to come.

It doesn't look too shabby, either.

Obviously Quattroporte and A8, TDV8 RR, C30 D5, Q7V12TDi, Ferrari 330GTC, new Scirocco, and X5 4.0d for when the numbers come up, but in all honesty and in the real horrible world:

Hyundai Sante Fe 2.2d

Unfortunately this is the most suitable car for me and my circumstances at the moment. I've studied the brochures and data tables in car mags enough now to actually like the look of them too.

Yeti runs it a close second.

Well, not many newish cars float my boat, but these do;

Golf GTI Mk5

Posted Image

These will fall into the hands of wannabe gangsta's & assorted bell ends soon enough though.

FIAT 500 (in black/dark grey, with these wheels)

Posted Image

The streets will be full of 500's in no time. Novelty might wear off for me.

Saab 9-3 Conv

Posted Image

Some would say sub standard build quality, but I like 'em

That is all.

Nowt thats on sale in the UK, but a new Camaro or Challanger would be nice 8)

Posted

The new 2010 5 Series - so much nicer than the old one

The 3 Series Coupe - easily the prettiest car they make

Golf GT TDi Mark 6 because it's so good

The latest Mondeo, ditto

Audi A5 - I don't do Audis, but they are good looking

Citroen C1/ Toyota Gaygo - what the new Ka should be, not the little pig that it is)

Jaguar XF - so handsome. So is the XK8.

Modern Japs, Fords, GM just passes me by. I don't think there has ever been a more dismal era of car design.

New Discovery

Nu VW Beetle Convertable

I shall get my coat.

The latest Ford Fiesta just looks like another version of a Mazda, the Ka has totally lost it's original design and looks like a squashed Corsa from the rear, modern japs i dont like to due to the very cramped engine bays they seem to have, I was looking at the engine bay of a Toyota Auris hybrid - what a over complex piece of crap, I imagine a few winters on the fine exposed wiring around one of control units is going to help, also brillant Toyota engineering design to shove the brake fluid res right under the windscreen area.

Back to the list...

Fiat Panda

Skoda Superb Estate

Skoda Fabia - the recent facelifted one and then it has to be in a certain colour.

Posted

- Skoda Yeti....No idea why, but I just want one!

Good choice sir. I'm keeping mine until it counts as shite - that day will surely come, especially as it's beige.

Picking purely from a recent issue of Autocar's New Car A-Z...

Audi A5/S5. In fact, not fussed about spec. It looks like a proper car.

Citroen C5. I don't quite know why.

Fiat 500. I don't quite know why, either.

Ford Mondeo. In black, preferably as an estate, as high up the range as possible.

Seat Exeo. Like the A5, it just looks right somehow.

Subaru Legacy. Preferably diesel.

And... err... thats about it. 6 cars. I don't really go in for the sporty stuff, I tend to like big saloons but most of the manufacturers seem to have ruined them.

I also have to say that I'm most disappointed to see the Proton Impian no longer listed, as for someone my age I really rather fancy one in metallic gold with a beige interior...
