Ford Sierra GVG 510Y

I did thousands of miles in Sierras, Cavaliers and Montegos back when they were current. I preferred the Sierra. Yes, Cavaliers were faster and more modern, the Montego was a decent drive but broke down too much, the Sierra just did what I wanted and was a more comfortable car for me. I will agree that Vauxhall were at their peak then though, that’s why I have a Senator.

Just popped up on my Facebook, very late Mk1 1.6L estate

That applied to the 1.5TD Corsa B as well.

Which honestly was otherwise a good little car (once you got used to the hilarious turbo lag), but when I got it literally everything between your knees and the windscreen was a total blur at idle.

What a car they were. Stupidly quick and a lot of fun.

A quick update.

Hopefully, I'm picking up the base this coming Friday from from the paintshop.

I've been a bit busy with my other hobby!

Saw this dangly mirrored delight on bank holiday Monday. In lovely condition too.

Unfortunately, due to the paintshop having personal issues, the Base is not ready and will not be at the forthcoming home dealer show this weekend as planned in Gt Yarmouth.

All is not bad news, he has promised it will be ready for the bank holiday weekend (two weeks away)

A few more photos of the process taken three weeks ago.

What’s the back story with it? Nobody was around when I saw it.
It’s a really nicely done car. Well kept and clearly well loved.

It's been in the same family from new; never welded. Had a partial respray, but that's it.

Initial demand for Sierras was really high, despite  negative press covfefe regarding its looks.
This car has dangly mirrors, but no Kinnock-friendly aerostrakes. It was built during a crossover period for components and certain parts, like the carburettor, were a sod to source.

Weirdly, the from-new-and-now-once-more owner, who worked for Ford, found that he could get a car cheaper (and faster) from a dealer than he could through Ford's internal system.
He showed it to his uncle in London: he and his wife loved the car and the colour (Crystal Green), and asked Kieron (owner) to get him something similar. Nobody obliged.

In the end, his uncle bought it from him, and Kieron got another Sierra through Ford; its ystem had caught up in the meantime.

His uncle sadly passed a few years back, but had arranged for it to stay in the family. He had some light mechanical work done, some small repairs, and a stainless exhaust fitted.
Apart from consumables, tyres, and a more modern head unit, the car's pretty much as-built. His uncle always garaged it, and only used it for family holidays to the ROI.

His family were wonderful in tracing photos, and had incredible recall of locations. Kieron's niece even dug out the original invoice for me.

I'll find out which CC it's in, if you want to track it down.

Hilariously, Kieron and the Sierra dragged my SEAT and I  out of a field entrance during the shoot! I got stuck trying to stay out of the way in a panning shot; we'd done most of the tracking around the access roads of Llandow Circuit (sadly, we didn't get on the track itself, but we had a lovely lunch there).

Wow! It definitely does have that look about it of a car that’s not been messed around with or cut about for a restoration. I can’t explain how, but cars that get restored never quite have that look to them.
When I went to the show and saw it, it really stood out.

If you can recall which CC it’s in I’ll have a look for the back issue. I’d definitely be interested to have a read of that.👍

Where is that held?

I'm going to FOTU and one in Lincolnshire in July.

It's first outing is a local one which normally has 500 plus cars.

That's quite a trek from North Norfolk.

Nope! Wrong museum!

I've got Gaydon mixed up with Beaulieu which over 4 and a half hours, Gaydon is three.
