I'VE BROUGHT A NEW CAR ! WELL NEW TO ME.

As my 1993 L reg cavalier failed it mot over a month ago bn 6 wks since it's been on the road now an in the course of trying to repair it me and my friend have discovered that the passanger outer, inner/ middle sill and rear seat belt mount is fresh air and rust  along with sum other expensive faults to fix too it fait is yet to be decided has left me transportless as the uno mk1 i share with my brother doesn't deserve daily hack use though it is more than capable an it needs more tlc really when/if i get the money! An the local council has layed 'chipping' the irony i won't even get started on that subject. On ever road by my work place so the uno was defently out of the question.

So as im paid a pitence funds for a new car was low. So wasn't the best timing to buy another car.

After alot of let downs an lack of local cheap motors under £300 was my budget i thought that i wasn't gunna find a car. Then i thought of a place in telford that sells cheap cars. A scrap yard!

So phoned up and said he had loads of cars at my price range so went yesturday after id finished work with a m8 an my brother. I wanted summit like a astra / escort / tipo 1.4/ 1.6 etc. The choice was a N reg escort encore 5dr in met red plenty of rust an betty boo pics on the plates £300. No thanks. A fiesta mk4 1.3 ghia P reg 5dr with gaffa tapped arches £300. No. Rover 100 3 dr white P reg £400 looked very clean but to be honest i hate them an was more than i could afford but each to there own. A L reg citroen zx diesel 5dr in burgndy with a cracked screen missing drivers wheel trim an the passanger wheel trim was a pug 309 item. Nice. £295. I was really intrested in this but my m8 said it was a shed he was probbley right so we crossed this off too.

This left me a choice of a pov M reg mondeo 5dr diesel td in white £325 or a R reg pug 406 2.0 glx 4dr in solid green. £425 with a knackard exhaust it was out of my price range i thought. But asked for the keys as ive always liked the looks of these early pug 406's an after a test drive an a poke round it made a checky offer of £300 was told £350 it was mine so the deal was done! £50 over my budget but was the nicest car there i think.

Well what have i got for my money well it came with tax till end of october an mot 17 th november just under a quarter of a tank petrol. It was filthy outside an covered in bird sh*t. The inside stinks of fags has no radio a bodged switich for the mpg fuel range. Missing jack in the tool kit an drivers side lower rubber wind deflecter think that makes sence? Was hanging off and sumone had attempted to re attach it with sillicone as it was ripped ive removed it but i need new clips 1st an then a new rubber too as well as touch up pen as the plastic clips have chipped sum of the paint off. :( Engine oil was black an low so topped up for know till i can get that done as well . Only done 144,770 miles when collected so just run in. :) Then there is the exhaust to fix. This is the 2nd most expensive car i have ever brought. An the newest too. 1998 R. Has x 4 leccy windows, abs never had a car with this before. Leccy mirrors never had these etheir an aircon which works my m8 was gutted. A 1st too.

Any comments prefer good as ive 110 % skint myself out buying this. And any advice appraciated.

Sounds like "The Rookery" near Oakengates, next to some sort of builders yard? Took some pics there before they expanded.

Sounds like a fair buy. Pug 406 bits are pretty readily available as theres loads of them in scrappys.

Well spotted. You must be very proud.

Do you have any useful advice to offer? Sadly I don't, being a self-confessed mechanical idiot, but I have better things to do than criticise someone's grammar in public.

FFS... :x:roll:

Anyhoo...

Burnside, I may be not too far from you. Several scrappies round here, and a mate may well be breaking a Xantia soon (similar underneath to the 406), so shout up if I can help.

I hope my old Chavalier doesn't succumb to the rust worm! I'm starting to like it.

FFS... :x:roll:

It's not a grammatical correction. It's a spelling correction. They're different words with different meanings.

brought (brôt)

v. Past tense and past participle of bring.

bought (bôt)

v. Past tense and past participle of buy.

It's the reason they have "bring and buy" sales. If bought and brought were the same word they'd just have "Bring" sales.

I hope you find this useful..... :x:roll:

With apologies to all parties in the ongoing case of The Internet vs the English Language; that observation has me rofling in a pool of my own wee.

It's funny 'cos it's true.....

Meanwhile, back in autoshite world:

....a mate may well be breaking a Xantia soon (similar underneath to the 406)....

Hmm, are they similar enough to allow the Pug to be fitted with the Xantia's clever suspension?

Quick pic taken yesterday just after handing over the ready's. :)

Milford cubicle cavs are usually pretty good, it's just me being me i seem to have the knack of buying the worst example available.

Just watch out for the inner front arches and back edge of the sills. The very last on a m plate seam to last best from what ive seen. I'll try an get the cav back on the road despite it sorry state i'll get a post up on it's situation soon.

Offending rusty area that has been cut out. Watching my m8 take a hammer to the rusty sill wasn't pleasent to watch. Have a replacement sill an some sheet metal ready to use when my m8 gets round to it.

How my cav stands at the moment. :(

An cheers for the grammar lesson. Reading the comments has been entertaining.

Mine is an M reg in the same colour, it's a bit grotty but it has already had its sills welded badly.

I knew it, WMS or "The Rookery" as I've known it.

Glad your sticking by the Cav. Keep us updated as to its progress.

Thanks Lord Sterling to be honest ive been feeling pretty down about the cav as the car mean's alot to me as i brought it after a very bad time in my life a few years ago an not having a car for 6mths. It's been so bad i can't sleep at night with the worry and am sick of people telling me it's just an old car and you might as well scrap it  Can't bear the thought of that so with a lot of help from my m8 and a lot of me just watching hopefully we can get it back on the road though when it's done i'll have a dilema to etheir sell it or the pug as ive got no room to keep both sadly or the money.

I've only found out about the yard about a year ago by chance pretty fair on parts compared to the places by me. Early on in the year watched a lad rag a bmw 3 series [e36] round the yard with a flat front tyre only looked about 10!

Looks like a good buy there, well done!

My old L-reg Cav 1.8LS had the rust in all the places mentioned, and in the corner between the boot floor, and the back of the floor pan, just above and behind the tank. And a few interesting electrical maladies. Hope you can sort your Cav out, they're good motors.

Well said that man. It's fair comment as bought and brought are totally different things.

Now let's sort out the 'could of' and 'would of' grammar murderers!

That's come up very nicely. To be honest compared to all the other cars you were looking at (except perhaps the ZX) the 406 is in a different league. The early 2.0 petrols were lovely things - just about enough power, unless it was an auto like mine - fantastic ride and handling, just about the smoothest car you could buy in its class at the time. Mine's not missed a beat in 16 months, I took it to Cambridge and back from Devon and was amazed it was doing 39mpg on the motoway at 75mph. Get the air con sorted if its not working and you'll have a lovely motor, just a shame its in Nordic Green. I used to sell these new and it was only the fleets which took this colour.

I think those 406's, and the 306's, and even the 106 are the best looking contemporary cars Peugeot have made, they look great.

Drive great as well. Get out of any modern car into a 205, a 306 or 405 and it actually feels like driving again.

Thanks the cav been a great car it's had it fair share of niggles but it's a 16 yrs old car and was looking a bit sorry for itself when i brought it but for £250 i couldn't say no as i always liked cavs when i was growing up, still do. :) Though my mum hates it for some reason. It will be a while before it's sorted but will give a update as anything intresting happens.

Maybe i should start a new post on the cav an give the full story of it's progress?

Hey we could be here for ever with my grammer mistakes so i wouldn't bother !

Dammit. First rule of being a Grammar Nazi is that whenever you post something correcting someone elses cock-up, you make one yourself.

They're just having indeed.

Naturally, I meant that post to be read in a Cornish Yokel type accent, in which case it would almost sound right.

Dammit.

At this juncture I'd like to point out the M8 is a motorway in Scotland and a certain type of bolt.

That's exactly why I try to avoid being a Spelling/Punctuation/Grammar Nazi. Sod's law dictates that you will always make a mistake when you point out somebody else's.

The Peugeot looks really nice. Goes to show what a bit of elbow grease and clenaing products can do.

Good on you for sticking by your car. Most people these days are more interested in obtaining the newest and latest models of whatever, when they see your they seem feel it right to say something negative about it (I fond alot of the time they say these things to make it look like they know what they are talking about - It actually has the opposite effect). They dont understand the meaning of 'sentimental value' unless its something really old and antique. I'd just ignore tha haters and laugh at what they've got. In my experiance they always seem confused/upset when you turn around and laugh/critisise thier choices.

Aldridge isnt very far from me, I store a couple of my cars near Streetly. If you need a hand mate just let me know. (Although, I'm not very good on mechanics/bodywork :? )

Thanks as you say these handle really well an have a great ride too. Typical french. All the best riding cars ive owend have all been french. It's worn it's miles well [144k] an can't believe it's a 12 yr old car how time fly's. [The punto gt isn't mine it's my brothers so doesn't count but he likes to look on here so hence it's included on my list of cars] . Always liked the shape of the 406 too. It has a great spec an the aircon work's great too. :D

As for the colour it wouldn't be my first choice but it's really grown on me after i washed it! My brother pointed out that this colour or a colour close to it was used by peugeot for the 406 touring cars in the late 90's. Anybody got some pics? Think this car was registered to peugeot when new too so right about the fleet bit.

Thanks for the tip to avoid any confusion ill say mate instead of m8 in future.

A nice buy. Early 406's were pretty cars. Amongst the last of the pretty Peugeots. I don’t think the revised ones were that bad either to be honest. I've only ever driven one example (an 'S' plate in Diablo Red). I only drove it about four miles but found it very chuckable for it's size. Excellent ride too.

It's a lot of car for £300, especially with some tax and MOT remaining. From the pictures it looks very respectable. I even like the colour too. I see I'm not the only one who likes a bit of tyre-blackening :) ! 144k on a 12/13 year old car of that size (and probably former repmobile) is bugger all, especially in diesel format. I've seen those mileages on company cars only four/five years old in our place. The stinking interior (stale fags) may take a while to clear. We had a mk3 Golf once and the previous owner was a smoker. It took months to clear. Give all the plastics a good scrub out and wipe over the seats and don't forget the headlining too. The nicotine will probably be still staining your cloths three or four scrubs down the line... Whilst the weather's nice it would be worthwhile to drop all the windows where you feel safe to do so and those new Febreze Sprays work a treat, although they're ridiculously expensive. Good old magic trees on their own won't be enough to get rid of the smell. As already stated, there are plenty of 406’s in scrapyards across the land these days, so I'll be very surprised if you have difficulty in getting most parks.

Your brother isn't far wrong with the colour regarding the old 406 touring cars. I was heavily into the BTCC at this time (before it was wrecked when the repmobiles vanished and two-bit companies replaced the manufacturers :x ) and I do remember they were mostly painted in pretty much that shade of green with a splash of gold. Here's an example.

Shame about the Cavalier. I know it looks a mess right now, but it shouldn't take too much to put it right. They're decent old barges. Many later examples come in that green (forgot the 'official' name for it now...). I remember a number of factory employees around here was razzing around in them when they were new. An uncle of mine had one (a saloon though) in that colour.

Thanks Lord Sterling much appricated your right about those haters they usually aren't even intrested in cars too hence there negative comments.

An cheers for the offer of help that's very good of you to offer. Im no mechanic by any mean's even though i managed to change the rad on the cav myself a while back which was a big achivement for me an can do the oil changes myself. Finally managed to change a set of pads and disc's on me and my brother's 1987 fiat uno after some help and a lot of swearing too a few month's back!
